Solid Alternative to Ipod Mini

Olympus's first foray into the MP3 market is, on the whole, a good start. The first thing that sticks out is the LCD display and controls. They're touch activated and shine a brilliant red when pressed. Aesthetically, it's the most innovative player on the market. The menu system is not as intuitive as Apple's, however. That being said, it's fairly easy to navigate once you use it for a while.
The battery life is roughly 8-10 hours which is about standard in the market. The cradle it charges on is decent though doesn't feal solid unlike the player itself which feels solid. That said, it's hard-drive based and not flash so it's not recommended for workouts or constant motion.
A few cons with the product: the included software is hardly anywhere near Itunes and it doesn't simply support drag and drop files in Windows. It's also worth nothing that, since it has a black surface, fingerprints will show no matter what you do when held in the light. It's also very important to UPDATE THE FIRMWARE to version 2.17 which can be found on Olympus's site. This takes care of a lot of the issues with this product, the main concern being the maximum volume level which is extremely low unless you flash the firmware. Make this the first priority right after you take it out of the box.
Overall, Olympus did a good job for a market monopolized by Apple. It's not perfect but it does offer a good GB for $ price and a one year warranty. I would imagine that Olympus will only build upon a solid start and make the next version even better.
