Great camera, owned one since 2001

I read some of the reviews on the Olympus D-510. I have a few things that will help other owners.
First, on the menu, go to Set, scroll over to hold and turn it on. Now your settings will be retained even if you turn off the camera. It even holds most of the time during battery changes.

Get some new NiMH rechargeable batteries. If you get 8 you will always have a spare. Sometimes I think I have taken 75 or more photos on one battery charge, probably more.
When I got the camera my 128mb card and photo taking was very slow. Later I ended up with a 32mb card and pictures would write almost instantly! I plugged the camera with the slow card into my computer (make sure your batteries are full) I opened My Computer and formatted the cameras card just like you would a normal hard drive or floppy. Results- must faster picture processing. You may also try to defrag the drive, but formating should clean the gunk off. I only had to do this once, but I occassionaly do it again. I don't know if it was necessary. Make sure you have alreaded saved the photos to the computer.
Finally, there is an option in the menu to hold the picture on the screen while it is saving it to the card. Under Set, turn on the record view. This option only appears when the camera is open and on.
I too have loved this camera. After 5 years of hiking, kayaking, fishing, rock climbing, beating, bashing and dropping my flash quit working. I taped it shut and the camera started working again, but only of course in good light. Shortly after that, it fell off the back of my motorcycle and was run over by a car. That finished it off.
A friend of mine also has one and likes it better than his newer camera. On his the door on/off switch is wearing out. You have to physicall hold the door open or the camera turns off. Mine was not as bad as his, but it was headed that way.
I replaced mine with one from an ebay auction for $50 including shipping. This tough camera retains value considering the fancy stuff out there today for around only $100. I hope this helps my fellow D-510 fans!

It eats batteries like there is no tomorrow and the memory card are expensive and difficult to find. Read my guide for more info.

I have a pricey digital SLR that I use for serious photography. That said, I have been lost without my Olympus D-510 which I dropped in a lake last summer when my canoe overturned. The SLR doesn't fit in my pocket when I'm on the go, the pictures have to be downsized for emailing, I have to worry about it all the time.
So count me in among those who have chosen to replace the Olympus with the exact same model. It takes an excellent picture for a little point and shoot!

  I love this camera!!
Review created: 08/29/08

I got the same model, make, etc. of this camera after I lost mine after falling in flood water just after Hurricane Katrina. I used the camera for a lot of things, but most importantly for the excellent quality I get for my eBay listings. When one of my cats knocked it off my computer tower the battery cover broke off and Olympus informed me that they no longer manufacture the part I needed. I love this camera so much that I waited until I saw a listing at a reasonable price for the same make & model and bid my brains out! The Seller was fantastic, I couldn't have gotten a faster shipper or sweeter Seller; I already have the software on my computer so was able to start using it as soon as it came out of the box! This camera is, to me, one of the easiest to use/understand. I like that it's not tiny - I like to feel like a camera has some substance! And I love that it's so easy to learn and to use - it practically takes it's own pics! The clarity is great; I purchased an older digital camera and just couldn't get the color or tone right. But getting my Olympus back was just what I needed. I highly recommend this product, it's fabu!

  Outstanding Camera
Review created: 08/11/08

The camera is good, and very easy to use. I've had other cameras, but this is good in my book. The only thing that I wish, is it has a larger memory card.

  Olympus Camedia D 510 2.1 Megapixel
Review created: 09/03/06

We purchased this camera to replace ours that recently broke. Ours was the 490 model and this was the 510. We were very pleased with the easy to understand programs of the camera and the quality of the pictures is impeccable. We love the low megapixels because the photos seem to be softer in look, not as "digital" looking as the higher megapixel cameras.

Some of the things we aren't very excited about is the rate at which the camera drains the batteries. They seem to die quickly even if they are brand new. Another thing I am not as pleased about as in the 490 is the wait time between photos. The 510 takes longer to write the picture than the 490. Also, a little detail I miss about the 490 is that the 510 doesn't show the picture on the screen immediately after you took it...so you must view the picture to see if it took well or not instead of just moving on to other shots. As any parent knows...that picture worthy moment comes and goes and you have to hope that you got it successfully recorded! With the 510, there was no guessing.

Overall, we are pleased with the camera quality and that of the photos it takes. Thanks so much :)

  I love this camera--
Review created: 08/02/06

It takes great pictures with its little old 2.1 mp. Much better than cameras with more megapixels. I guess it's the Olympus lens. And it's sturdy. I loved it so much that I bought it again o eBay after I lost the original instead of just moving on and moving up. And I'm still using it--ignoring the other digital cameras in the house. The shutter lag is there, for sure, and the way it reverts to default setting and the complicated menus are an annoyance, but the finished results are better, much better than with the camera I bought a couple of years later--the 3.2 mp, highly rated Canon SD110. I took my son's graduation pictures with it, and they came out great!

  Worked well for me
Review created: 07/26/06

I owned this camera for about 3 years. It was absolutely faultless during that time. Not using the LCD screen except for the few seconds of review after the picture was taken I went 2 weeks and 279 pictures on one set of rechargeable batteries (it uses 4 AA.) My only complaint is the cryptic menus and the fact it goes back to the default settings when you turn it off. The movie mode works well but no sound. If you want dependability this seems to be it.
