This is a great little camera it is comact and robust although it is only a 2.1 mp the photos are top notch and this camera is fine for most poeples needs and is so easy to use. The megapixels ony come into affect if requiring to enlarge the picures to bigger sizes...A top camera

Camera is low resolution, but it works. If the guy didnt have an underwater housing for it I would have bought a higher resolution camera.

  These are still good cameras
Review created: 02/10/09

I have had this same camera model for about 6 years. I know it's old and has low megapixels, but I've tried other cameras and none of them have made me happy. It focuses quickly on moving objects and the pictures seldom blur. The flash has to be popped up so I can quickly take pictures without a flash, which I seem to do a lot. It's tough as nails. I have three of them now, one is my Ebay camera for taking pictures for listings (have dropped it about three times, it still works!), it's set on a lower megapixel so it doesn't take up a lot of storage room on the card. The second camera I carry with me everywhere and is set to a higher resolution. It makes perfect 4 x 6 prints, even though it's only set at about 2 megapixels. I'm sure I could make 8 x 10 with a print if I wanted to. I purchased a third camera - this is the one I'm reviewing - same model of course - and it's just as nice as the other two. I just wanted to make sure I would have a back up camera. These cameras are cheap as dirt but so easy to use, I'd advise anyone to get one. I just wish it had a bigger zoom. I think other than this, it's the perfect camera.

Little- known Facts about the D490
Review created: 07/09/07
by:

My first digital camera was the Olympus D470 w/1.3 Mega pixel. By chance I discovered two things about the camera that were extraordinary. One is that the camera is sensitive to infrared light. With the proper filter one can take pictures recording only infrared light, which of course can be done in apparent darkness. The other thing (one far more useful to me) is that the camera works extremely well with my Kowa 82mm scope. Even with the most primitive connection (simply camera held to scope), one can produce striking, close-up photographs of wildlife that have amazing clarity at only 1.3 mega pixels. My next camera, an Olympus C 740 series, had many advantages but was not compatible with my scope. Nor is the Olympus E-500 (which I use primarily now) unless I were willing to buy an expensive macro lense and adaptor. Despite the enormous increase in mega pixels, either camera on its own could bring the distant objects in as well as the original camera with the scope. I found that the D490 is basically the same camera as the D460 with greater mega pixels. It does in fact produce a noticeable difference from the D460. I use it when an object (usually a bird) is more than a 100 yards away.

I like the complete camera it self ,has great color lot's of gadgetry and also take great pictures, after looking at that same camera for sale at $100.00 from an indiviual, I got on e-bay and found this one for far less and a good one at that This is why I have become an e-bayer. By the way I have not come across any things I dislike.

  Excellent Digital Beginners Camera
Review created: 11/17/06

This Camera, even though it takes a small 2.1 megapixle photo (by todays standards) takes beautiful photos in automatic mode. Excellent Value for what you get, easy to use (much easier than my 5.1 MP SLR!) and ALMOST as good pictures!

I've bought 2 of these, and now rarely use the 5.1, as most of my photos are for ebay or computer use, unless you are shooting for a magazine or printed piece, this will be all you need! PROBABLY MORE than you really need! Choose carefully before buying anything else!!!
