Album Notes There was a brilliant circle of European composers, including Franz Waxman, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, who fled Hitler's oppression for a creative life in the U.S. These composers introduced a new age of film music to the American cinema in the 1940's. This recording is dedicated to chamber music of Franz Waxman. Waxman's music is an intoxicating mixture of the Germanic classical tradition and American jazz and popular music. This recording features the St. Clair Trio in arrangements of Waxman's film music as well as his more classically conceived chamber music. Waxman's wit and melodic gifts are amply displayed. The "Young in Heart Suite" features European sentiment punctuated by bluesy Americana. The "Huckleberry Finn Overture" is energetic with a folk tune flavor that's capped by a complex fugue. Waxman's "serious" music deserves wider recognition. Most memorable is "The Little Mouse" from his 'Song of Terezin.' The song is a setting of a poem by child who perished at the Nazi concentration camp at Terezin. All of the music is performed with tremendous warmth and skill by the excellent St. Clair Trio.
