1969 CLASSIC ANTI-WAR FARCE OF ALL TIME WITH BRITISH ACTING ROYALTY
This amazing classic represents now renowned British director, Sir Richard Attenborough's directorial debut. It's one of the most scathing anti-war musical satires ever made. Based on Joan Littlewood's 1963 stage play, Attenborough's film makes appropos use of the catastrophes of WWI as if some kind of morbid amusement park.
Gruesome depictions of the senseless acts of war are featured. Songs from WWI are made into farcical numbers by staging officers to play children's games while troops are dying all around them on the battlefield.
This is one of the most highly regarded casts ever assembled in a single film. Britain's finest actors show up & royally deliver all-classic performances. There's no way to over-estimate the significance of the messages all those who are part of the film are imparting. The names & characters of the Sirs & Dames are too numerous to completely name. So here are are few:
Sirs Dirk Bogarde, John Gielgud, John Mills, Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave & Ralph Richardson are among them. Then, there's Dame Maggie Smith, Vanessa & Corin Redgrave, Susannah York, Colin Farrell, and Jane Seymour (to mention so few is almost embarassing).
What Attenborough has the cast perform is a masterpiece anti-war diatribe.
At the time this film premiered it was 1969. The film's numerous anti-war comments were viewed then, as they are now, as barely veiled ones on the ongoing Vietnam War.
With this film's re-release in 2006, it's message remains just as fitting and timely as ever. Should I name why? Or will you know?
This DVD is the special collector's edition in checkpoint format. The collector's edition is the DVD to own. The original VHS, when in mint condition is extremely collectible~
