The Official SAT Study Guide by College Board (2004, Paperback, Package)

This review is for "The Official SAT Study Guide" ("For the March 2005 test and beyond")

I bought this book for a good price new from Amazon.com, but I was skeptical at first. I mean, the test is given by College Board ... and they wrote a guide to help you ace it???

But I've read quite a few SAT and SAT 2 help books by now and believe me: this book is one of the best out there.
I've read books by Kaplan and Princeton Review and they are LOADED with typos that a 6th grader (SERIOUSLY!!) would catch. I also have read guides by Barron's because I took a class that required the Barron's books and they also have one or two mistakes (usually the case where the answer is A and the key at the back of the book says its C but goes on to explain why A is correct).
My guess is that these companies are so in a rush to release a new THICK book every year, that editing is just on vacation?

ANYWAY, this book is boring but so is every single other SAT book. At the beginning, they have these 3 or 5 page chapters that tell you the same thing ("now remember: with math questions, make sure you read the directions ahead of time so you don't waste time on test day" NEXT Chpt: "Now remember: with reading questions, make sure you read the directions ahead...")
BUT, this book really teaches you some neat tricks but basically POUNDS you with practice, practice, and more... you know, which is the only way you can study for these tests.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
I took this test in April 2006 with very minimal studying before and NO SAT BOOKS READ. I took it again in June 2006 and GAINED about 100 points in reading and math. I dropped 10 points in writing :(
I don't know if it was the book, but I'm willing to put a heavy bet on yes.

OVERALL:
This book is well laid out with enough to keep you busy for a while (reading AND practicing). Not any typos (or at least that I can remember now that I've finished it). GREAT BOOK!

If any down side, its the constant strategy by COllege Board to take make the book seem big to those jittery parents and write some things over and over. Another bad thing is the constant ads to "Don't forget to buy the "Official SAT Online Course" and other College Board products, but they are on the sides of the book and you can just ignore them.

I bought this study guide for my daughter to use to study for the SAT test. She found it very helpful and and liked it. I highly recommend this book to be used to study for the SAT test. There are many practice tests with answers to them and if you learn from the mistakes you've made because they explain every answer which is nice.

This is a great SAT prep book that is published by the makers of the test itself, The College Board. This is a very important detail because the sample tests are extremely true to form. In my experience with other test-prep book publishers, such as Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barrons, (and trust me I have plenty) sample tests are consistently more difficult or over-simplified relative to the actual College Board tests. What's more is that all basic SAT strategy is covered succinctly within this book's pages; I would reccommend it to anyone looking for a quick, easy, and acurate study guide for the SAT.

Just buy it! This is your college future we're talking about! It's got everything you need to know and gives you guidelines to steer you in the right direction.

I needed this book to help my daughter improve her grades in school (she's in the 9th grade). So far, the book is a huge help. It offers a range of subjects. Her school offered this book for sale, but I was able to get a better deal on the book and in shipping through Ebay. The whole transaction worked out great.

I won this bid but seller never sent me this book. It is a bad situation because I planned to have this book at specific date.

well I use it for my SAT class, it is not the best book ever. But its an average book, you take a quiz and check your answers at the end. it has become kind of boaring since its in black and white with no pictures. (hope it helps)

My daughter liked the detailed explanations and practice tests and believes it helped her get a score of 1950!

these are the best study guides i have seen, i hope to achieve a higher sat score now. it gives you so much information about taking the sat. thanks for the cheap price as a college student 7 dollars was well worth buying

I like my SAT Book. It took a long time to receive it but it's exactly what I wanted. I decided to buy it because I needed something to help me study for the SAT. I had taken it once without using the book and didn't do as well as I had hoped. So I think using this book before taking it again will help me get a better score.

I am very happy with my book it seems like its new! =)I honestly don't really care about the pencil marks and i would pick this book over the new book anyday ! who would want to pay 20 bucks for the new book?

A used but still perfectly fine study guide. There's no need for a study guide to be in new condition, so it was completely worth the price.
