  The funniest British show ever!!
Review created: 10/12/06

As an avid BBC America watcher....I quickly stumbled across this...and never let it go!!! The office is a fantastic, extremely original comedy, or should I say Mockumentary - the phrase coined after this and other similar series introduced a new concept in comedy - filmed with a realistic stance and added narration.
I will also hold this dear to me; as quite frankly it is not that far from the truth...I have worked for British companies both in and out of the UK, and I indeed had a Brit Boss - called David - in this series David Brent is the Manager - who also thought himself the coolest cat but had a strange knack for saying the wrong thing and being completely politically incorrect!
This DVD is all you need to capture the essence of the UK series which lead to the current and hugely successful US spin off. It contains series one and two and the funny but oh so awkward Office Special!
This DVD takes you though the initial introductions to the team - David Brent is played by Ricky Gervais - whose superb acting creates a character who both feel for and squirm at, the whole way along! Never have I seen a scene so uncomfortable as the many Gervais acts out!! His right hand man Gareth played by Mackenzie Cook who was more recently seen in Pirates of the Caribbean - is also a ridiculous character whereas your heart goes out to the woes of Tim; essentially the same character as appears in the US series with a crush on the engaged office secretary!!
We then progress though the office struggles as it is downsized ad merged with another branch, to Davids loss of Manager status, through the special where he seems to be a salesman of sorts and semi celebrity after the "success" of the 'documentary" - The Office. It gets more and more uncomfortable adn awkward, yet in a very funny way!!
There are so many must see scenes...such as David trying to out do the new boss in a dancing competition....right there in the office; or his attempts to have harassment training!! Its strange how mnay scenes can be both difficult to watch yet hysterical at the same time - it employs a different breed of comedy, some very talented actors and some clever script writing to be able to provide this unique mix and balance!!
This is a must have DVD for all Office fans...everything you need in one place to keep laughing and get your Office fix!!

BBC's The Office is one of those shows that you gift to every friend and family member around you for the next five years..If I had the extra money lying around I would make sure everyone I know owned a copy.I guess the point I am trying to make is: The Office is genius. Two thumbs way up.

The Office has to be the funniest show EVER. My husband and I watch the series over and over now. David Brent must be the best, worst boss there has ever been. I can't even see a picture of him without laughing. I am so glad I purchased the Collection. It is a classic series that I will never get tired of! I just wish there were more than two seasons.

It's amazing. You have to like dry humor but you will be hysterical. David Brent is the funniest/most obnoxious/crazy character ever but he made this show my favorite. My roommate and I watch this over and over. It's better then the American version of the show. I would always recommend it.

This original Office is fabulous--much funnier than the U.S. version. The humor is dry and intelligent, and the characters are not just silly, but also complex. At times, you feel sorry for them; other times, you love them; and mostly, you think they're idiots. I think it's an amazing talent in actors/comedians to create such a complex reaction in an audience.

This is a DVD I can watch over and over again.

Yeah. Right. David Brent (the center character of THE OFFICE) is the best, bloody, self-righteous boog-a-boo to hit DVD. The only bad thing I could possible mutter about the brilliance of this show is the fact that it only lasts 2 seasons and a 2-part Christmas episode long. Blast!

"Come on, come on, baby!! Come on, come on, baby!!"

Dry and Funny with a Caveat

I stumbled onto this DVD by accident and instantly became a fan. The droll, wry, DRY humor in a mockumentary style is such a hit with me. (I enjoy the American version (with Steve Carell) too.)

I'm also a fan of Christopher Guest's work (This Is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind) which is done in a similar style. It also reminds me of a WONDERFUL show from Australia called Frontline (with Rob Sitch) which I daresay was the original style these other shows have borrowed from.

My caveat for The Office is the R rating--regular uses of the F word among other crude, sexual languiage, and extremely crude sexual situations. I was surprised that BBC TV allows such license! So be warned. A cleaned up version would be near and dear to my heart (who doesn't cheer for Tim and Dawn??)

This the original "the office". Ricky Gervais, a british comedian, wrote this brilliant satire of office workers - I'm POSITIVE he captured the office worker the world 'round! Though I was saddened to see the end of its run after two season, Ricky Gervais' decision to do so allows individuals see that the American version pales horribly in comparison. I needed to have this iconic piece of work in my place.

The Office, british version is such a great show. I love it. The American version has nothing to offer me (and I love Steve Carell).

I like the dry humor of the british version. Some people complain about not being able to understand the accents, but I can understand them and I enjoy the british voices. I also love the chemestry between dawn and Tim. I also don't mind that the show didn't continue, because it seems rounded and complete the way it is. If a serries goes on too long the best parts of it can drain away and it won't be as good anymore.

This show is great.

Great series. Better than the current Office. The humor is more crude than the American one. I do enjoy both of them though.

If you haven't seen this yet and you're wondering whether or not to take a chance on it....do it. This series changed the way I look at comedies. It's comedy at it's best. I only wish there was more episodes.

An Office has never been so much fun!
Review created: 08/10/08

The office is in it's own category!! It's so freaking funny. Some of the jokes are quick and in your face, while others you have to think about for a minute. Sometimes English humor goes over my head, but not with this series. There is a reason why they made an American version. This was a great English series. It was a great success for a reason. It's funny, clever, unique and it also makes you feel for the characters. Plus, unlike the American version "Which is still great" this version allows anything. From dildos to F bombs. I reccomend it to anyone who liked the AMerican version and to anyone who even remotely gets English humor. In fact, I just reccomend it to anyone who likes to laugh. It goes beyond your typical laugh out loud sitcom. If you're too cheap to buy it then at least watch it some how.
The only negative is that there are only 12 episodes plus an hour special which wraps the whole series up. But at least each episode is around 30 minutes long. It's nothing compared to the 100 episodes of the American version. But I guess that's what keeps this series fresh and you wanting more!

The funniest show since Fawlty Towers. Brilliant. So much funnier than the (good but different) American counterpart. Actually makes you cringe and get embarrassed just to be watching! Buy it and share with all your English or Anglophile friends!

I love the characters and the since of humor (it can be a bit dry). I disliked the crudeness it sometimes has. I decided to buy the DVDs because I wanted to see all of the episodes and that was the only i could.

Overall I think I made a good decision by purchasing these DVDs.

  nearly perfect

The British Version of the Office is awesome. It shows how great a show can be. The only flaw is that it is only twelve episodes and movie, so they have to contain the entire show's story in about six hours.

Still, the first season is excellent, by the third episode, every character is beautifully developed. By the end of the first season, you really fall in love with them and by the start of the second season you are addicted.

Now, the second season, things get a little tougher. The second season seems to me to be a lot about frustration, jealousy, and the fall of Ricky Gervais' Character.

The Christmas Special, a two part movie length episode is to me, the crowning glory of the series. It so beautifully wraps up every story line that you are left almost stunned.

If you have only seen the US version, then you are still getting a lot of quality tv, but you really owe it to a fan of the show to see the original.

Very Subtle but Much Funnier Than the American Version!
Review created: 02/06/08
by:

I can't describe it. At first I didn't get it, but then I "saw" what they were trying to do and loved it. I'm from America and I got the humor but a lot of American won't, so it may not be for everyone. It's not like "My Name is Earl",
and in my opinion, it's more subtle than the American verison, but more funny (and to some degree, more realistic). I wish it went on longer than two seasons.

My husband and I LOVE the American version of The Office. When the writers went on strike I knew we needed our "fix," so we decided to try the British version. We are glad that we did. The British humor is a little different and they definitely can get away w/ more one television there, but the episodes have not disappointed. If you love The Office the BBC version is a good diversion until the strike ends.

The British version of this show is surprisingly similar to to the version in the U.S. Although many of the characters act in much the same manner and some of the episodes seem very familiar to those more recently run in the U.S., the show is still very funny. The most difficult part of the show is trying to adjust to the accents. Once I watched a couple of episodes I adjusted just fine and was able to enjoy them all. Ricky Gervais is hilarious as usual.

Just a note:
If you are going to buy a season, it is much cheaper to just buy them both together. You'll save yourself quite a bit of money if you do your shopping.
