Synopsis After she is almost raped by her brother-in-law, Sabrina Eversleigh runs away from the family estate. Caught in a deadly blizzard, Sabrina is saved by Phillip Mercerault, a handsome Viscount who nurses her back to health and later offers to save her reputation by marrying her. Although Sabrina initially refuses Phillip's offer, they eventually do enter into a marriage of convenience. However, their marriage faces many challenges, foremost among them: Sabrina's fear of men and Phillip's ongoing relationship with his mistress. Author Catherine Coulter calls THE OFFER an extensive rewrite of her 1981 romance novel AN HONORABLE OFFER.

Industry Reviews Coulter (The Hellion Bride, Audio Reviews, LJ 1/93) writes/rewrites old-style romances complete with sheltered but independent virgins, oversexed villains, and reforming rakes. Although there are still many fans of this style, this particular story translated poorly to audio, partly due to the writing but more critically due to the narration. An American reader of a British story might have been accepted had Denica Fairman read competently, but this is not the case. Her melodramatic, overemotional voice makes a mockery of the characters. The villainous Italian nobleman clearly has his origins in Transylvania. The pomposity of the hero is laughable while the heroine's whiney immaturity grows quickly tiresome. The romance genre deserves greater audio exposure, but this particular title is not recommended. Jodi L. Israel, Jamaica Plain, MA Kolchin
