Are The 3rd Movies In A Trilogy....

Are The 3rd Movies In A Trilogy.... just produced to cash in
on a cash cow?

We liked the first Ocean's Film, Eleven, the second 'Twelve' was
OK, but this film was uneven.

We like the actors and were glad to see them again,
but the story was over the top, the action was uneven,
and it seemed the film was just there to fill out a trilogy
for later DVD set release.

Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones from the first two movies were replaced with Ellen Barkin. Not a really good choice... sorry!

Al Pacino was great as the bad guy for the movie. He really played
his role the way it should be, not over the top and not too corny.

An average flick, OK to watch during the WGA strike that is still
affecting the TV Season of 2007-08.

The DVD does have extras, which are OK for those that like the
main character actors.

Not picking on this movie, Spider-Man 3, Pirates 3, etc have also
been lacking in the ending of their trilogies also.

A little over the top....the script started running all

I loved Ocean's 11 and I liked Ocean's 12. Ocean's 13 was not that great. First off the premise itself was a little over the top - it is one thing planning a heist, another to plan a heist with every table, every slot winning and the house losing (no, I am not giving out any secrets here). This is an ambitious attempt (daring?), but then everything seems to fall in place so easy. And it just doesn't have the same feel of thrill, suspense, excitement whatever. Good for a watch, but not much more.

  3rd Time the Charm !!!! A++++++++
Review created: 11/12/07
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Sometimes the Third Time "Really is The Charm".
The First (2) 'Ocean' films offered the large ensemble of stars. 'Ocean's Eleven' revived the "Rat Pack" bonhomie of the 1960 original; camaraderie was discovered.
The troupe gallivanted across Europe in 'Ocean's Twelve'; invigorating the camaraderie again as we saunteered through the Casino Heists with our beloved crew.
Back in Las Vegas for the Third (3rd) and professed Last Installment by Industry moguls, the franchise has brought that camaraderie of the crew to it's highest heights; with Julia Roberts also gaining footing. It is near complete perfect; and with 'Ocean's 13' Director Steven Soderbergh - his cast has delivered a truly effervescent Caper.
It's old pal Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) that brings the gang back together; this time out when Casino Mogul Willie Bank (Al Pacino) swindles him out of a partnership on the Strip's Latest Casino. The treachery is too much for the old man and for months, as his former partner completes construction of his latest venture—now called 'Bank's—Reuben' hovers between life and death.
Danny Ocean (George Clooney) decides 'Revenge is the Best Medicine' for what ails his friend, and so he, Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle), Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), and the rest conceive a two-fold plan: (1) to create a run on Bank's bank on the night of his Lavish Grand Opening and (2) to humiliate him by ruining his chances of earning yet another perfect Five Diamond Rating from the Hotel Industry's Top Review Guide.
Like the (2) prior 'Ocean's' movies, this one holds an over-abundance of plot. There is no such thing as a simple heist in Danny Ocean's World and so his schemes are absolutely Byzantine. This one involves rigging machines, multiple bribes, Linus' seduction of Banks' assistant, Abigail Sponder (Ellen Barkin), a dice factory in Mexico, the oversized drills used to build the Chunnel, an Evel Knievel-like motorcycle stunt rider, a last-minute heist, breaching supposedly impregnable security, and so much more. The scam is complex, yet followable and engrossing; the movie takes the time to ensure it's explaining what is going to happen instead of just getting on with it.
This 3rd Install "Really Works" in the biggest of ways. A subplot involving the Malloy brothers—Virgil (Casey Affleck) and Turk (Scott Caan)— foment revolution at a Mexico Dice Factory is hilarious; and David Paymer is wonderful in another - as the put-upon Five-Diamond Critic who finds his stay at Bank's Casino to be remarkable snake bit.
Production Designer Philip Messina and Art Directors Tony Fanning and Doug J. Meerdink also deserve credit for the Casino they created on a Hollywood back-lot. While a couple of interiors and some exteriors — notably on the Strip in front of the Bellagio Hotel — were shot on location, the majority of the film was shot in this Ersatz Casino and it is a marvelous, evocative invention that perfectly captures that 'Sin City' ambience of tacky luxury.
Yet mainly, on this 3rd, the ensemble completely gels. Clooney's easy-going charm still paints him as the leader — let's face it, he is the one would probably would have been in the real 'Rat Pack' back in the day. Yet, this time out, it is almost a ceremonial title, because Danny is only one element in a well-oiled machine. If this is, in fact, the final 'Ocean's Movie', saving the "Best For Last" is a wonderful way to go out.
Formulaicely Flawless & Entertaining at 150% !! A++++

I enjoyed all the Ocean's movies. I really enjoyed the interactions between George Clooney's and Brad Pitt's characters. I felt the first movie was still the best, with Ocean's Thirteen being my second favorite of the series.

  Ocean's Thirteen
Review created: 01/11/09(updated 01/18/09)
by:

The third installment of Steven Soderbergh's slick, star-studded heist series just might be the best, as Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and company pull off another elaborate caper, this time in the name of revenge. Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), one of Ocean's original eleven, lies nearly comatose after a myocardial infarction brought on by shock. His dreams of regaining his former glory on the Vegas strip have been dashed by the dastardly Willie Bank (Al Pacino), with whom Reuben foolishly went into business to build the biggest and flashiest casino the the world has ever seen. Bank took Reuben for all he was worth, and now, the famously loyal thirteen won't rest until Bank has been brought down. They execute this noble cause through complex, daring, and brilliant machinations that make the most of everyone's talents, including Yen's (Shaobo Qin) acrobatics, Linus's (Matt Damon) acting abilities, and Basher's (Don Cheadle) heavy machinery. Virgil and Turk Malloy (Casey Affleck and Scott Caan) get a few hilarious moments as they brew up a revolution in a Mexican plastics plant, while Rusty (Brad Pitt) and Danny coolly preside over the action like omniscient, infallible deities, always about three steps ahead of the game. The villain's downfall is utterly satisfying due to the pure capitalist evil channelled by Pacino, while Ellen Barkin vamps it up as Bank's "cougar" of an assistant. The camaraderie of the thirteen lends heart to these cool criminals, best captured by the sappy letters Basher sends Reuben, which ultimately bring him back to life. Vegas is effectively captured through seamless editing and beautiful photography, with the trappings of uber-wealth making the fantasy even more fantastical.

Review created: 01/04/09

Ocean's Thirteen is a 2007 heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring an ensemble cast. It is the third (and reportedly final)[1] in the Soderbergh series following the 2004 sequel Ocean's Twelve and the 2001 film Ocean's Eleven, which itself was a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name. All of the cast members reprised their roles from the previous installments except for Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin joined the cast as their new targets.

It was released on June 8, 2007 (known as World Ocean Day), in the United States,[2] although it was released in several countries in the Middle East on June 6.[3] Filming began in July 2006 in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, based on a script by Brian Koppelman and David Levien.[4]

  OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (2007,DVD)
Review created: 08/13/08

SINCE I SEEN THE FIRST 2 YOU ALWAYS WANT TO SEE THE 3RD UNLESS IT IS TOTALLY STUPID. GOOD FILM BUT AS IN THE FIRST 2 THERE ARE TIMES WHERE IT WILL LOSE YOU. THEY TALK WAY ABOVE YOUR HEAD WITH "THIEF JARGON" AND FOR THIS REASON IT MAKES IT HARD TO FOLLOW. GREAT MIX OF ACTORS AND THERE IS A LOT OF ACTION BUT HOPEFULLY THEY DON'T MAKE A FOURTH ONE AS THIS SERIES IS LOOSING STEAM. GIVE IT A TRY BUT DON'T WASTE TOO MUCH MONEY ON IT.

Ocean's 13: Great Movie About Trust & Friendship
Review created: 07/24/08

I love movies where you like the bad guys. Only the best directors and best casting combine to make "likeable bad guys". The Ocean's 11 movies are examples of great casting and great directing combining to make "likeable bad guys".

In this installment, the Ocean's Gang unites to seek out revenge when a Casino mogul reneges on a partnership with one of the crew.

I know this sounds cliche, but this is the 3rd best Ocean's movie in the 3 part series thus far.

This movie chose a slightly different directoral path - by revealing the "how" of the con the entire movie. While there is a very interesting twist at the end, the action comes more from the improvisation and intelligence of the Ocean's Gang in this film.

I particularly liked the odes to Sinatra (who originally played Danny Ocean). I also enjoyed seeing Super Dave Osborne as one of the stars.

In some places the dialogue is a little too wordy and was kind of hard to follow.

You don't really have to have seen the other two for this movie to make sense, but it does help.

Ocean's 11 is the strongest movie in the series of Clooney starring as Daniel Ocean.

  Ocean's 13 should be called Ocean's 11.3
Review created: 07/17/08
by:

Well not that great. The story is entertaining and simple enough. Ocean's 13 are all about the cast of characters, their chemistry together, and their interactions with each other. Returning director Steven Soderbergh excitedly plays and toys with the camera with different angles, different kinds of shots, wide variety of lengths of shots, and even borrowing a technique that was made famous in Fight Club. While its nothing experimental, Soderbergh does a good job showcasing a story using a variety of techniques so the movie never even considers looking stale. Completing the directing is a sort of old-school vibe that accompanies the soundtrack. It begins to look so dated that you might expect even Sinatra to make an appearance.

Pacing is what turn-off some moviegoers, and pretty much what destroyed Ocean's 12 (despite the unforgivable plot). Unlike recent third installments, the pacing here remains consistent, and for the most part works well. The majority of Ocean's 13 is setting up the grand scheme, which ranges from an underground bunker in Nevada to a factory in Mexico. The third act is when the plan starts getting off the ground, and the payoff is definitely great for the audience and the lucky cast of gamblers unaware of what is about to unfold.

Bottom Line: Despite some missing members of before (where'd all the women go?) Ocean's 13 is good and everything that made the original a surprise smash. The chemistry among the crew remains intact, but now we have a different story to follow, and a better heist to capture on film. Capturing all the merriment is Soderbergh, who once again excels in putting his distinct methods of film-making to good use as he contributes a dosage of style, color and old-school flavor to the movie. The ending leaves the door open for more, and as long as they remain as entertaining as this, why shouldn't we continue the series? Clooney, Damon, and especially Brad Pitt seem to have a lot of fun robbing people and screwing around. Whatever happened to the good-ol' days of classic, one-track storytelling anyway? 13 had nothing surprising. So 13 is just 11 all over again which should have been called 11.3

I was already an Ocean's fan before I bought Ocean's Thirteen, but I must say that the third one definitely rivaled it's first. Not only is Danny Ocean and the rest challenging themselves with a seemingly impossible job, they are bringing in the whole crew from the previous ones! It's like a big reunion of rats, sneaks and con artists! It's awesome and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys movies about thefts, sneaks or just a fan of Brad Pitt or George Clooney!

Ocean's Thirteen brought the same kind of excitement that the first two brought. George Clooney again outdid himself, and with the help from Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and this time, Andy Garcia, screwing Al Pacino just got easier. With all the tricks that the team pulls off, from the strike in Mexico to shaking the building, this movie is a must see for an Ocean's fans. I give this 5 out 5 stars.
