Album Notes Robert Shaw spent much of his career involved with orchestral music, but it may be in the realm of unaccompanied choral music that he is best remembered. This collection of hauntingly beautiful performances by the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and Robert Shaw Chamber Singers offers a remarkable retrospective of an impressive career. The first four tracks on the album are a special treat: never-before released, they were recorded at the 1989 Robert Shaw Festval in France. The rich timbre of the Church of St. Pierre results in a warm, glowing performance. The rest of the album is comprised of selected highlights from Shaw's extensive discography. Included are thee distinct arrangements of the anonymous medieval text, "O Magnum Mysterium," beautiful treatments of the story of the Nativity. Each performance highlights a different aspect of the music, showing why unaccompanied chorus has inspired audiences for centuries.
