A great machine that could use a few changes.

First let me say that I really like my Oscars! It makes a great shot, time after time, thanks to the heat exchanger (HX). And the steam capacity of this machine is awesome - you'll run out of milk before you run out of steam. Plus, it looks good sitting on the counter top (although it is a little large).

But for all that, there are things about the Oscar that drive me nuts. For one, there is no hot water dispenser, a standard on machines from every other major maker. For another, it's a hard pull to remove the water reservoir from the machine & if you try to fill it in the machine you're pouring water at shoulder height into an opening the size of a half-dollar.

So why do I own two, you say? Because it is a very serious espresso maker for the serious home barista. For making espresso shots for groups of people it is far superior to the Rancilio Silvia & the consumer machines from Gaggia.

Since it is an HX machine -- beware.

Like all HX machines, the 'Oscar' wastes a LOT of heat, wastes a LOT of water and requires you to recall when you last made an espresso shot. If it was moments ago, there is probably no need to flush with cold water. If it was say, an hour ago, the brew water will be over-heated, and you MUST purge out anywhere from 1 to 6 ounces of water to lower the temperature of the next burst of water -- the water that will brew the espresso -- to anywhere close to the best possible temp. for brewing. I know. I owned an HX machine and -- loathed it!

I must mention the cheap, noisy, sticky and inaccurate, and FAILURE PRONE 'pressurestat' that is used to regulate the water temp.

And by the way, I don't SELL any (stock) HX machines, period.
Regards, Dave

Great for home, office, or even when your 10K machine breaks down at your cafe; I know, because I've used the machine in a professional environment, and found most people couldn't tell the differnce between shots the "big" machine and the little Oscar. What the makers spared by using a plastic housing, they certainly didn't cut corners on the machinery. This machine will make for years of great tasting espresso making!

  Great machine!
Review created: 12/10/09

I'm totally impressed by this machine. It's my third espresso machine, after a Briel and a Silvia. It makes consistent, professional grade espresso day after day. It's easy to clean and to take care of--and now finally I feel I have a machine with which I can make great cappucino's and espresso's day after day. I recommend getting a good quality coffee grinder to go with it--I have a La Cimbai Jr and it does the trick nicely.

Yeah so it's loud but wow, I am surprised at what this little baby can do. I have worked on commercial machines like La Marzocco, Rancillio, and the Nuova Simonelli Premier and the Oscar provides exceptionally comparable results. After a couple of mods with the portafilter spouts and the group head shower screen (had spare parts from my 2-group premier) this little lassy has proven herself worthy of any discerning caffeine guru. I wouldn't recommend this machine to anyone who hasn't been a properly trained barista--unless of course you have too much extra cash lying around--as it is very powerful and takes precision to achieve professional results. If you're looking for a good home machine or a spare for your shop and have been a trained barista, look no further--the Oscar is your best bet.
