Very good book for middle schoolers.

My daughter just finished this book and said she really enjoyed it. I read the synopis of the story before ordering it so I knew it was about the Nazi invasions and subsequent hiding of Jews to protect them. We have recently been discussing world events, current and past, so this book will help her get a perspective of how things were during WWII and how todays world has similar issues. This is her third Lois Lowry book and she has liked them all. One caveat though, before I ordered books from Lois Lowry on Ebay, I check reviews at Amazon and only bought the ones with the best reviews.

Beautiful, compelling story of courage and hope in WWII

Our family loves this book! It is easily read by adults and upper-grade elementary and secondary students. It is a hope-filled introduction of (or addition to) the courage and fear of those who lived in WWII. The writing is excellent, the story is amazing, and the characters are so vivid and special. Though the actual story is fiction, the events are based on real events, real courage, and real survival during the war, that are referenced at the end of the book. Lois Lowry did well with this one!

  Can't wait

I read this story when I was in elementary school and LOVED it. I remember reading it and thinking how horrible it would have been to have to live like that, in those conditions and at that young age. I HIGHLY recommend that every child (age 8 +) read this book. Some reviews say that it's not "graphic enough" to depict the holocaust, but it's written for children and the great thing is that it doesn't frighten them away at a young age from learning about what the Jews went through, but instead lights a spark in them to want to learn more and that in return will get them to the more detailed material with age. I am looking to purchase this book for my children now so that when they are age appropriate they can read the story of a brave girl, a persecuted people, who didn't deserve it, and the trying times of WWII.

I had to read this book for one of my classes to become an elementary teacher. I REALLY enjoyed the book and it's storyline. I think that it's a great book for children to read about the hollocaust because it has a lot of emotion without being too graphic. These are some of the reasons that I decided to buy this book.

I liked stories from the German nazi time. I have read other books from this era when I was younger and I like stories that tells me what the children were going through or how they felt through the war. I decided to buy this book because my brother liked the author's other book,The Giver.

  not for the the boys

Excellent Book with a great story about the Nazi occupation of Denmark and the Dane's ability to look beyond religion and care for all people regardless. My son is in 6th grade. He says this is a good book but he would recommend it to the girls. He says its not a book for the boys. He enjoys reading about WW2 and that is why he chose this book. He also said it had some sad times. I read it and thought it was fantastic but I am his mom after all.

I wanted to buy this book, because I had read it as an assigned reading in grade school, and really enjoyed it, and wanted re-read it. I'm glad I did, I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first for a school assignment, and learned the book wasn't as long as I remembered.

  5th graders opinion
Review created: 05/10/08

We read it in my class, and from the time i first started reading it i knew it was going to be great. It was captivating, every time my teacher put the book down we would yell 'lets read more!' It pulled you in, you could lose time reading that book! And when it was over my entire class was sad. I had to get it.

Ok, so I am giving the book a good review. I read it in the 6th grade and loved it. I wanted to get it so that one day when my kids get bigger I could read it to them. However this is where I give the bad part to you. I never got the book or my money back! Not happy about either.... So if you can get the book or find it, read it and hold on to it. Its a great, wonderful, sad, book that will touch you and stay with you forever.

Thank you.

A great way to teach children about the holocaust...
Review created: 06/20/06

I read this book in in the third grade and it's still my favorite. Our teacher read it to us out loud and we were all just amazed... it got us all interested in learning more about history and the holocaust. I want to get a copy sothat my son can read it when he learns to read.

This story of the friendship between a young girl and her Jewish neighbor during World War II is core reading for fifth or sixth grade and is written at that level. The author uses each situation to define the character of the heroes in the story giving a positive light to loyalty and family. At the climax of the story, the heroines resolve to save her friend is tested and she comes through the experience with a new appreciation of her family during those trying times. The protagonists exhibit character that is often missing in today's world and this reading gives a wonderful example of mores needing to be learned by all.
