At the start of the American Civil War many men of the Lumbee Indian Tribe of North Carolina volunteered to join forces with the Confederate States. However their patriotic intentions were shunned and not only were they not allowed to fight many of the men and boys were forced into slave labor in factories and prisons. To add insult to injury the living conditions were made intolerable to The Lumbee People. North Carolina passed a law declaring that no native people could bare arms and they were left at the mercy of the often dishonest Confederate Home Guard and passing Union Soldiers. This resulted in widespread starvation and horrible injustice to The Lumbees.

This book is based on the true, historical account of Henry Berry Lowrie and the woman who loved him-Rhoda Strong. Henry Berry Lowrie is often referred to as The Native American Robin Hood. Fed up with the injustice, starvation and forced abduction of young men he started what has been called the "Lowrie Uprising" to bring a measure of justice and survival to his people.

I am not only a Lumbee but also a descendant of the Lowrie family. This book brought tears to my eyes and yet filled me with much pride for the apparent courage and deep love that runs through my people. This author did a fantastic job of putting to paper a story that should never be forgotten and for that I am thankful.
