Publisher's Note
Through discussions of a diverse array of British, French, and American novels, this collection of essays explores queer worlds of taste, texture, joy, and ennui, focusing on such subjects as flogging, wizardry, exorcism, dance, Zionist desire, and Internet sexuality.

Industry Reviews
The essays fix a queer 'gazing' on various novels, canonical and not. The gazing moves 'away from existing accounts of how "one" should read, and back toward a grappling with the recalcitrant, fecund question of how one does.' . . . The close textual inquiry and observations are so well done that a number of these essays should define new debates within the study of the novel at hand. Kathryn Bond Stockton on Morrison's Beloved, Michael Lucey on late Balzac, John Vincent on Swinburne's Lesbia Brandon, and Jacob Press on Eliot's Daniel Deronda are but four quite startling examples. This astonishing collection deserves wide reading and discussion; recommended for all academic libraries at all levels.

Mager

If [Runa] Bora's [essay on The Ambassadors] is the most arresting, the most theoretically significant contribution to Novel Gazing: Queer readings in fiction is Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's introduction, 'Paranoid Reading and Reparative Reading; or, You're So Paranoid. You Probably Think This Introduction Is about You'. Sedgwick's suggestion that several of the essays stand at 'a distance from any of those master-figures or master-discourses to which theoretical appeals can today be made in shorthand' accurately diagnoses this part of the problem, and is borne out by some of the contributions which follow it. . . . This large and very diverse collection certainly is free, then, from any sense of having been written to formula.
