A good lesson for kids, and an interesting read--

Here's a good one by Avi, and it is especially relevant for the middle and early high school set.
This book tells the story of Phillip Malloy, a boy whose refusal stand for the National Anthem causes great controversy on a local, state and national level. The book is interesting in the way it's written; it is told through Phillip's diary entries, newspaper articles, transcripts, and dialogues that are written in play-like form, with each speaker identified.
The lessons to be learned here are many: disrespect leads to problems, individual rights are important, and national pride is a matter of great importance to the American people. The funny thing is, Phillip didn't really realize he was taking a stand on an issue. It all started when he decided to goof off and refuse to follow a teacher's instructions.
Kids seem to relate well to this one, and if American history is in their future, it is especially relevant for them. There are many opportunities for discussion here.
