Sting's double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis's arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"). The songs are a generally varied lot, ranging from a tribute to victims of repression in Argentina ("They Dance Alone") to a tongue-in-cheek, sort-of-reggae tribute to famous eccentric Quentin Crisp ("An Englishman in New York"). The sort-of-funk "We'll Be Together"(originally written for a Japanese beer commercial) is the most upbeat and pop-ish thing here, and was deservedly a hit single, although Sting now disdains it.

...Nothing Like the Sun: Sting shakes off the Police with this one
Review created: 12/23/01
by: telynor -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Bluesy, jazzy, and a touch of funk -- Sting hits his stride with this one.

Cons:
Some of the songs are a bit too sad.

There was a great outcry across the land when the Police broke up back in the eighties. Stewart Copeland went on to score films and tv, Andy Summers went his own way, and Sting -- Well, Sting went on to become an even bigger legend and one of the best songwriters around. His previous solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles was a bit incoherent in places, but with this one, he struck gold, and hasn't stopped since. Most of the songs center around love, in all of its forms, and are generally pop tunes, catchy without too much embellishment. I can handle that, I listen to Sting for the lyrics,.

Sting's Greatest Work To Date

Pros:
Sting's best album - he found his true voice with this masterful achievement

Cons:
are persons found in jails

"I don't know what the critics will think of this album...People might listen to it and wonder, What's he doing? I knew I was on the right track when I confused everybody in the studio - they didn't have a clue about what I was trying to get at, which was a real pop record. I wanted a record that is funny, emotional, sad, sexy, danceable and serious. That, to me, is what pop music should be - not this homogeneous record that has one guitar sound and one snare drum sound from start to finish." -Sting, Spin, December, 1987 Sting, pop artiste Sting's first solo album, The Dream Of The Blue...

Who Needs Copeland & Summers Anyway???

Pros:
"Fragile" alone is worth the cost of admission, but there's so much more...

Cons:
One or two songs that I'm only mildly enthused about.

The Police closed up shop in 1986, at which point lead singer/bassist Sting was already established as a solo star. His debut, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, was a critical and commercial success that was both a progression of The Police's evolving sound (this was a band that got more musically complex with each successive album) as well as an exploration of his jazz roots. It was literate enough for the highbrow folks to get into and hooky enough for the folks who were listening to Prince and Madonna at the time-although I hope they all got up to move the needle or fast-forward the cassette..

Foxy_shy's one-man Sting and the Police W/O: Part VI - Coming to terms
Review created: 01/23/04
by: foxy_shy -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
It's his best album
Cons:
Pick again
Instead of a prologue Nothing like the Sun was the culmination of everything Sting had pursued over the course of the 80s, a true masterpiece. This was where every piece of the puzzle finally lay in its place, his political awareness, his maturity as a musician, his genius as a lyricist, yes the best band he d ever had, finally, his beautiful soul it all comes down to this: one of the 80s best pop albums. Part 1: All that you can t leave behind Sting has always been the kind of person to let his feelings show. As he himself admits, Synchronicity (the Police, 1983) consists almost entirely of.

Nothing Like The Sun......No Other Words Are Needed

Pros:
It's one of the best "pop" albums I've heard.

Cons:
None

"I don't know what the critics will think of this album...." When interviewed by Spin magazine back in 1987, Sting remarked that he was trying to create a pop record that was not necessarily filled with one sound and groove and that was going to transcend the well-known definition of pop music. Many people found this statement and others of this sort to be somewhat bizarre and peculiar but he had been leading towards a signature sound before he made this album. However, there were occurrences of trial-and-error before this masterpiece was created. With several albums before this, both his own.
