Recording information: The Coop, New York, NY.
For a young and commercially successful artist, Norah Jones has admirably avoided playing it too safe. After scoring an unlikely sales sensation and multiple Grammy award winner with 2002's torchy COME AWAY WITH ME, Jones shifted gears slightly to accent that album's country and folk elements on the 1970s-styled follow-up, FEELS LIKE HOME. Following that, Jones deliberately played with expectations, first becoming a low-key sideman in a quirky alt-country band called the Little Willies, then playing the lead role in a new movie by Hong Kong arthouse director Wong Kar-Wai.
Jones's third album, NOT TOO LATE, is perhaps not as extreme as any of those other moves away from her initial comfort zone, but it's a departure nonetheless. Recorded by Jones and longtime collaborator Lee Alexander in their home studio and featuring only self-penned material, NOT TOO LATE is far less polished than Jones's previous records, with many songs featuring little more than the singer's familiar croon, a Floyd Cramer-influenced piano, and Alexander's subtle bass. Not quite jazz, country, or pop, NOT TOO LATE fuses all of Jones's influences into an immediately identifiable whole. It's easily her most mature and personal album to date.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 -- Jones has reclaimed her music on her own terms, establishing a new level of artistry with a fascinating line in subversion of the politest kind.
Mojo

NOT TOO LATE operates from an intimate stance.....Acoustic textures and bone-dry vocals draw the focus to the tune...
No Depression

Jones still favors gentle love songs, tunes streaked with a mix of nostalgia and hope, and her elegant amalgam of acoustic pop, soft focus country and polished blues still goes down like a spoonful of sugar.
Down Beat

4 stars out of 5 -- [S]omething altogether fresh....Just like that, Jones transforms herself into the gentlest of cutting-edge artists.
Uncut

3 stars out of 5 -- [An] understated blend of country, folk, jazz and soul....Simple songs, lovingly crafted and sweetly sung.
Q

NOT TOO LATE has a slightly, rougher, home-studio sound....[With] slow, gorgeous dream-pop ballads... -- Grade: B-
Entertainment Weekly

3 stars out of 5 -- [S]he's quirkier lyrically than any of her helpmates. And she remains pop's nicest superstar...

The 3rd album by Norah Jones. Relaxing southern soul. If you are a fan then you must have this! I'd say the favorite album by her thus far. You will not be disappointed.

      Never too late for improvement

Compared to Norah Jones' previous albums, "Not Too Late" is a serious progress in one important aspect: Norah's vocal technique has quite seriously improved and her singing posibilities are wider - particularly in low registers and sotto voce parts; the differentiation of dynamics in her performances makes this record much more attractive. She was frequently accused of having limited means of vocal expression, which was - looking back to her charming first recording - not totally without sense, although a wise simplicity, refinement and truthfulness of that first album as well as unusual Norah's voice timbre earned it a well deserved attention. I used to say, that I value her higher as a pianist, than a vocalist. With "Not Too Late" this is changing - there is a visible amount of work invested in her self-improvement in a weak spot, and this is the feature of a true artist. "Not Too Late" for some people can seem monotonous at first, but I think it's much more internally logic, than previous albums, and even listening to it 6 times a day for the last two weeks hasn't been boring at all (for me of course); on the contrary - it reveals still new aromas, like sniffing a very good wine, which leads not to a quick consumption of a gallon to get drunk as quickly as possible and have a terrible hangover afterwards (like with most contemporary leading recording companies' products created by their marketing departments), but to slow tasting, sipping, sniffing once again, with a full conscience, that we deal with something of real value. The last thing, but not the least, is lyrics of the kind, that in Poland is frequently called "a sung poetry". Summing up - a great pleasure, with typical for Norah Jones wide knowledge of American musical heritage, from which she draws much inspiration - with a special bow towards people like Tom Waits. Inspiration certainly doesn't mean copying - it means the attitude. Now I'm going to go and push "play" button once again - the "Not Too Late" is constantly inside my player.
