This book is a "must have" for anyone intersted in Northwest Coast art and anthropology. It is an analysis of form of the art. It explains the symbols and meanings of the designs in the art. There are chapters on symbolism adn realism, uses of two dimensional art, elements of art and the differences of shapes and colors. He explains the tribla differences in the art, as well as some explaination of the decorations on totem poles and masks.
My favorite part is the chapter on elements of the art because it explains color use, and the formline, ovids, eyelids, u forms and others in a simple manner that is understandable by a non art person!
I bought this book because I collect Northwest art, but never new what the symbols ,shapes and colors represented. It gave me a greater appreciation of this beautiful art form. The illustrations are easy to duplicate and are in black and white. This book was published in 1971 but is not out of date in the material.
