North American Birdfeeder Handbook
I bought this book because 1) I already have a copy and 2) I wanted to buy one for my mother, as we are both "birders." It is a great book to lay down the basics of how to draw birds to come to your yard (with instructions for building bird housing and feeding stations). Additionally, it lists, with good descriptive pictures, many of the most common birds that you find in North America. I am from the Pacific Northwest and it works well here. Also, now when my mother sees a bird and wants to ID it, she calls me, describes the bird, and I can give her a page number to check out. Great basic birding book!
