  Nokia N97 Review

The good:
The Nokia N97 features a touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and 32GB of internal flash memory. The smartphone also offers 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS and comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera.

The bad:
The N97's touch user interface isn't well integrated and can be inconsistent and confusing, especially compared with the competition. We would have preferred a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive.

The bottom line:
While the Nokia N97 is packed with features and offers the freedom of an unlocked phone, its clunky touch interface, sky-high price tag, and outdated operating system make it hard to recommend when there are better touch-screen smartphones on the market.

  Nokia N97, the best phone ever
Review created: 08/18/09
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have used over 26 phones/PDA's in the past 2 years (Apple, Palm, WinMo, etc.) and I have to say that I am most pleased with the Nokia n97. It is by far one of the best devices I have ever used. A few cool features of the device include: An adjustable home screen. Nokia allows you to add and remove widgets on the home screen to better fit your life style and how you use the device on a daily basis. A pretty responsive resisitive touchscreen. I have used many resisitive touchscreen devices such as: 8125, 8525, TyTnII, Touch Pro, etc. The touch response is quite accurate and pretty smooth when transitioning to a different touch selection. This device is also finger friendly and easy to select each icon or menu. Despite having a slower processor than say the Touch Pro (528MHz) to the n97 (434MHz) the phone runs quite fast with very little lag compared to most WinMo devices I have used in the past. The camera is great!! 32GB on board storage is a huge plus and it also can be expanded with a memory card.

One downside to the device, is like most Nseries phones, it still has a plasticy feel to it. For $600 plus you would expect to have a more metal, solid feel, but it does make up for it in other ways.

The keypad is nice, I would perfer a 4x3 number pad since that's what I'm used to and the spacebar is in a weird spot, but other than that with a little practice, it's easy to get the hang of. There may be a learning curve for some since S60 can be confusing or a little different than some other OS's, but if your like myself that has used several nokia devices in the past, not all that much has changed.

Overall, I would recommend this device, as well as pretty much any Nokia Nseries device, to anyone and everyone. There are a lot of cool features, too many to mention. The device fits great in your hand and you'll look good using it too. People will stop and ask when they see your phone, "What's that?"

There is a reason Nokia continues to be the world leader in the cell phone industry. They continue to make great products and really understand the meaning of what it is to have an 'all-in-one' device that can practically do everything to meet consumers needs for the demanding and fast paced world we live in today.

I love that the Nokia N97 has a 5MP camara, music and video player,FM radio, and WLAN. This is a WAY cool phone with many many features and gives the iPhone a run for it's money. The only thing I dislike about the N97 is it's high price.

There is not one thing I don't like about the N97. I've read some unhelpful and rude reviews about things like it doesn't feel like the iPhone, it doesn't look like the iPhone etc.

Well here's a good answer for all those doubters: It's not supposed to be like the iPhone!!!

I love this phone and would not trade it for anything in the world.

1. N97 is a super phone.
2. Don't buy from the seller "mobilepc_outlet". On the front page of the manual of the unit I got says "Draft 1. Do Not Use". Apparrently, the phone is not official version. One of the buttons on the side of the phone has already been loose. However, according to the "ell-written" production description, I can not get it returned.
so, be ware.

  Nokia N97 - Wonderful mobile phone! Just amazing.
Review created: 09/15/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Nokia N97 is the tip of the spear in Nokia's smartphone lineup. It is the most powerful, smartest and fully featured phone of the company. It is also the first Nokia phone to make use of a large touch-display and that alone has raised the expectations from die hard Nokia fans that have refused to switch over to the iPhone. And Nokia has put quite a lot of work and thought in the N97. I had a first look when Nokia was still developing the N97 and I was looking forward to get my hands on the final product. In this review, I will tell you how I used it, and how well it did. Does the Nokia N97 live up to the hype?
Context

Rushing a review is great to get links, but not the best way to get a good feel for something, so I used the Nokia N97 for a few weeks, mainly as a smartphone with Exchange support. Web browsing was tested regularly to read news and check various sites. Facebook was accessed via the Facebook application included in the phone.
Phone Highlights

* 3.5" Touch Display
* 32GB internal storage + 16GB optional storage vis flash card
* 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss Lens
* GPS
* WIFI, Bluetooth
* 3.5G
* FM Radio
* Complete specifications (pdf)

Phone Basics (Very Good)

As with any phone, the first thing that I check is how good the sound quality is, and how easy it is to dial a number or a contact. The good news is that the sound quality is good, although the volume is not very loud. It would be nice to have a more powerful sound output.

Dialing a number is quick and relatively efficient. There's no need to use the physical keyboard as the virtual numeric pad works great and there was no typo whatsoever while dialing numbers.

Dialing a contact is a bit more complex, if you have a bunch of them. From the contact list, you can scroll and click, or type a name and click. Typing a name requires the use of the physical keyboard, which is not very practical if you phone was closed. The T-Mobile G1 suffered from the same lack of virtual keyboard. Every qwerty slider phone should have one.

As you try to dial, the phone will ask you if you want to place a video call, each time! I've not seen anyone use video calls (ever), so I think that Nokia should have the option to skip that question. After a week, it was getting on my nerves.

Answering calls is easy, so is placing people on hold, or hang up. Good job Nokia. Locking and unlocking the phone is also easy and foolproof, thanks to the side button.
Physical Design (Good)

The Nokia N97 is a nicely designed phone. The design is agreeable to look at, and the build quality is good, except maybe for the battery cover which has a plastic feel - but it needs to be flexible because it's *removable*. The display is a mixed bag: it has a resolution of 640x360 but the colors seem a little faded and the clarity seems inferior to other touch phones. I suspect that one of the display layers has something to do with this. Two people that I've shown the phone to immediately made the same remark as well.

Next to the speaker, you will notice a front-facing camera and a proximity sensor. The 5 Megapixel camera is in the back, protected by a sliding lens cover. There's a "camera" button that makes taking picture more natural than taping on the screen (which often induces a last minute shake that could makes photos blurry). The keyboard sliding mechanism feels solid.

The Nokia N97 is a little thick (15.9mm). The bottom part is basically as thick as my Blackberry curve or an

if you need a fast smart phone, hi res camera, gps, wifi and a portable 32GB memory in your pocket this is the thing you are looking for, i love this phone and i have had a dozen other smart phones mostly windows mobile ones and my life is now %50 faster with the nokia n97 new symbian os s60 5th edition! i love the browser; it plays flash videos (like the ones in youtube) in the browser!

The only thing i don't like p to now is their app store called ovi store that is too young to be called a store yet as it barely has %10 or less than that of the iphone but of cource you can get apps online from a lot of sites sadly most are not compatible yet with the s60 5th edition, but this is changing fast :)

  Nokia N97 Rocked
Review created: 07/30/09(updated 07/30/09)
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Nokia N97 features a touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and 32GB of internal flash memory. The Smartphone also offers 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS and comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera. On the top of all these standard for a phone features, it also housed a MicroSD card slot which support up-to 16 GBs additional space which I tested with my Kingston 16GB mSD card and it work perfectly with a very decent data rate. The Phone is running on Symbian 6.0 OS with all the standard power saving features so the battery lasted for very long. I tested my phone with Bluetooth on and WIFI connected and used it for bench-mark testing with hours of talks and some internet browsing and it lasted for over 2 days and this gained my respect for the long lasting battery. On the top of these features, the touch screen also have a sensor which will automatically detect and rotate the screen, vertically or horizontally, base on the position of the phone; the side lock/unlock button work pretty well but it will take user a bit of time to get used to. The Camera is very powerful which gave very clear images. The music playing capability of the song is as good as the IPhone, I owned a 3G Iphone but I like the N97 better.
The odd is, it’s pretty expensive and QWERTY keyboard might get a little too much for someone who are new to this type of key settings. Also, the phone menu and setting will definitely get you if it is the first time you handle the phone because it is quiet complicated and confused so you might want to read through the Manual before deciding to play around with the phone. Also, as far as application, it is a bit lacked as compare to the Iphone. The phone supposed to have 90 days GPS service license but I tested mine, it was successfully activated but it does not functioning properly, same thing happened to my friend's case with his N97.
