My friend asked me to purchase this phone/computer for him and not knowing why I went ahead and made the purchase. After I gave him the phone he explained what it can do and why and man o man this thing is perfect for cheap people. First of all you can use it like a computer and connect to ANYONES WIFI connection for free. So you do not need to pay for ANY internet service, its FREE. As far as phone service you do not even have to activate the phone, how you ask? Well if you log on to SKYPE when you are using someone elses WIFI connection you can call anyone, anywhere for FREE using the SKYPE service. This phone even comes with a headset, how cool is that? Free phone and internet service just for purchasing this phone.

  Nokia N800--palm-sized GNU/Linux
Review created: 04/27/08
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased my Nokia N800 two weeks ago, and I'm excited by its possibilities. As a die-hard Debian GNU/Linux user, I'm glad that the N800 uses a Debian-based OS (Internet Tablet OS 2008). It's made for a smoother overall experience. It's been instructive to work with a non-i386/x64 system and to learn more about how flash memory works. I found it remarkably easy to attach a USB keyboard, and I love how easy it's been to listen to streaming media.

A few caveats: it's been difficult to get the system to boot from an internal SD card (I installed an 8GB card so I'd have plenty of room for applications). Booting works fine for about a week, then I have to revert back to the internal flash memory to boot.

Mouse support doesn't work out of the box. I haven't gotten a USB mouse working, even though my USB keyboard worked the first time I plugged it in.

Handwriting recognition is less than stellar. I've had bad luck getting the device to distinguish between a dash, an underscore, and a backspace, and also between a slash, a quotation mark, and a carriage return. Let's not start with colons or semicolons. Having used a Palm III for several years, I've gotten used to Palm's Graffiti gestures. While it's not fabulous, Graffiti's use of 'modes' (lower case, upper case, 'dot punctuation', 'slash punctuation', and numbers) means that the system isn't required to distinguish an O from a zero or a carriage return from a slash. Underscores and dashes work, as do colons and semicolons. In short, I can code using my Palm's stylus, but it's a whole lot more difficult with the N800. Of course, I'd have a hard time listening to music on a Palm....

In short, I'm happy with the N800 for basic tasks, like surfing a web page or two, or checking my e-mail (could check my e-mail from bed while sick), but it's not yet a PDA. With better handwriting recognition and some better PIM software, the N800 could go from good to great.

  Ipod Touch Vs N800??
Review created: 04/02/09

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Touchscreen, internet (wifi), im, videochat, up to 16GB of storage (flash memory), all in one - for $100? Forget the Ipod Touch - the Nokia N800 meets and surpasses all the standards the ipod touch. It's cheaper with a bigger screen - and customizable! You can add many more applications and games - for free! - You can hook it up to a GPS receiver - download maps - music, videos - pretty much - you can do anything on the go! What more could you ask for? :D - Make sure you get one - it's a fun gadget!!! XD

The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet was released in January 2007. When demonstrating the Nokia N800’s Internet capabilities, the most common question asked “is it a cellphone?”, in which I respond with a no, confusion and panic ensues. Next thing I know, I’m tied to a stake and the village people are chanting burn the witch, it’s black magic!

The confusion is understandable, since Nokia is best known as a cellphone manufacturer. The Nokia N800 is by no means a replacement for cellphones, rather they were intended to complement them. The Nokia N800 is actually apart of a new breed of gadgets, called Internet appliances, which are designed to perform Internet related task. The term appliance is fitting, like a toaster or blender, these devices serve a single purpose. The Nokia N800’s sole purpose is to provide easy access to Internet related features, such as web browsing, instant messenger, Internet calling, Internet radio, e-mail and so on. Perhaps new isn’t the best way to describe Internet appliances, the concept was first introduced in the 1990’s but never gained traction.

The Internet landscape has changed greatly since the 1990’s, with the advent of online video streaming such as YouTube, Internet radio, social websites, blogs, podcast, web applications, the list just keeps going, there’s just so much more to do online. If the Nokia N800 is able to capitalize on the growth of the Internet by providing an easy way to access most of these Internet features we could have a real winner on our hands.

  Best internet tablet

This is my second Nokia N800. The N800 is, without a doubt, the best Internet tablet today. Sadly, it is discontinued, having been replaced by the N810 which is arguably inferior in spite of the added GPS and keyboard.

The N800 user community is fantastic, and have developed some truly remarkable software for it. This is a fully open Linux computer that fits in a shirt pocket.

This gadget connects wirelessly, seamlessly to the internet through its wifi feature. I have trouble connecting the keyboard via bluetooth to this unit, I really cannot figure it out why. Overall, Skype functions are excellent and convenient to use. Media player is OK.

This device is a very good product for what it can do. Pretty fast web page loading, fast apps, open source support and good media support with mplayer installation.

If you want a small device for internet on the go using WiFi, a wide variety of playable media in your pocket, free (as in beer and speech) software and a linux lover, then this is the device for you!

At home, without any cables attached, I can surf the internet, listen to internet radio, watch youtube, make a skype phone call, even video calls with Jabber, watch my whole photo collection and listen to my whole CD collection which is on my computer in a shared folder and transfers over wireless LAN, and listen either over the builtin speakers, earphones, or my home stereo system (with a bluetooth receiver).
Same in my car, the internet connects by bluetooth through my cellphone (watch what plan you have so you don't have to pay extra megabytes of data transmission), and of course listen to 16 GBytes of music stored on 2 SDHC memory cards (cards normally not included).
That's just the beginning, more features are discovered as a play with that thing. Free software to download.
Just discovered that there is a real FM radio integrated, with a nice little applet to store your radio stations.
USB, to connect to your computer, and even connect other USB devices to it like cameras, USB storage (some non standard USB cables required, and some limitation...)
Just awesome, open source, excellent.
Don't even wanna think about iPhone or iPod touch any more, with all the blockades by Apple for the good stuff.

Nice little unit, works well, tablet can be calibrated for your liking. Recommend
using 1 gig SD card and upgrading OS2007 to OS2008. Better browser in OS2008. Could use a bigger power on/off button. Have used mine for a week and enjoying it.

Good Linux gadget, too bad about the webcam
Review created: 08/17/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent tool. I use it extensively to access other Linux boxes via xterm/ssh. I do a lot of internet news and blog tracking via its excellent RSS reader. The email client is superb and simple. Skype works only with voice or VoIP, no video. I use Internet radio widget to listen to international radio broadcasts over the web, if your favorite station broadcasts over the web, you can listen live!. It has a normal FM radio that uses the headphones as an antenna.
Through Maemo site, a YouTube client (MyTube) for searching and displaying YouTube videos, is available among tens of other free software. The feature that almost no one talks about is its built-in speakers. I added an 8GB and a 2GB SD card so I can have my music with me! The built-in webcam is completely useless, it can only be used with other N800 tablets running GoogleTalk or take grainy still pictures!

"Iphone & mimics BEWARE Nokia is kicking-butt "
Review created: 02/25/08

1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For the price, the Nokia N800 brings the web in a more personal way. First you don't need a phone provider to use most of its web capabilities. Second if feel you need to make some video or voice call thanks to the web cam Skype, Gyzmo and many other will provide the service and SMS. It hard drive not a flash drive like the iphone or ipod touch which allows you to create or run programs not just applications, the memory is based on your need it has two slots for the mini SD or the normal MMC. THE battery life is great you can surf the net for a period of 4 to 5 hours and the stanby mode it is proven to last about 5 days. So if you really need a product for a great price and reasonable aplications I suggest you get one. I had the N770 and I love my N800 even more. The sleek and very sexy N800 is a most have trust me you are never going to be bored of it... V

Review of the Nokia N800 - Internet for life
Review created: 11/19/09
by:

If you look at the data on dry stuffing Nokia N800, you have something to think about. Typewriter has a screen with a resolution of 800x480, operating system, which is based on the kernel Linux, as well as Wi-Fi and two slots for memory expansion. Largely similar characteristics in common with popular last line of Sharp Zaurus, representatives of which are often relegated to the ultraportable.

As mentioned above, Nokia N800 - not the first in its class. Finnish company has allocated a separate niche for devices intended mainly for comfortable viewing on mobile WEB-pages and gave them the name of the Internet Tablet (Mobile Internet Devices).

The first member of the class was Nokia 770. The author had the opportunity some time to communicate with this model, and I can say that the impression is still controversial. In a nutshell, they can be described as - the big colorful screen and disastrously short time work.

Nokia N800 is a direct descendant of the Nokia 770 and has the newer version of the same operating system. Stop on the differences in the stuffing of these two plates and we do not consider only the general points concerning the location occupied tablet on the market.

Optimization of the vast opportunities Linux-like systems for Internet browsing may seem strange from the standpoint of the user, but it is quite logical on the part of marketers Nokia. Prefix Internet Tablet and narrow specialization of devices that artificially protect food from direct competition with the classic Pocket PC. And this is arm Finnish concern. Judge for yourself - on the side of a large number of Microsoft-ready software and established long-term contacts with developers, while the number of applications for the Nokia N800 is directly dependent on the efforts of individual people (at least - companies) taken "to rebuild the" well-known Linux-program under a portable OS. In such a situation needed to equip the tablet to the fullest range of software that would make it completely finished product. A powerful browser, mail client, as well as a quick, easy and convenient connection to the Internet, whether it be GPRS-connection through the phone or connection happens through the nearest access point, Wi-Fi - are characteristics that should have been done Nokia N800 interesting to a wider audience.

The target audience are businessmen, which is important for the rapid and full access to the Internet in the most compact unit. Of course, the product has maximum relevance in the technologically developed countries, where there is a very dense cover Wi-Fi networks within the city (Russia, so far, not one of them).

Dimensions Nokia N800 are at the level of the largest modern Pocket PC: 75 × 144 × 13 (/ 18) mm with a mass of 206 grams. The duality of the last of the dimensions due to thickening of the construction in the upper part. Comfortable to wear the device can be either in a bag or large pockets of clothing. In this case, rather big weight of the tablet becomes almost unnoticeable.

Almost the entire front of the display is 4.1 inches diagonal c. On the left is a control unit, consisting of a five-way navigation button and three reciprocally keys (Back, List and return to standby mode).

Working with the navigation unit is convenient if you hold the device with two hands - in this case, the Nokia N800 is a bit like game consoles, as the left thumb falls exactly on the keys.

  Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
Review created: 11/09/09
by:

I bought this N800 to replace my outdated Sony Clié Palm Pilot, which I loved for it's simplicity and at the same time the sheer amount of apps that I could find for it. After several research, my choice went for the Nokia N800. Despite the manufacturer's track of Cell Phone builder, this one is _not_ a cell phone. But the fact that it runs a open source community driven OS based on Debian Linux, it's able to run about everything that you could wish (or close). One major point was the Garnet VM that runs the Palm OS on top of the Maemo OS (Nokia's OS for this device). I use it since about 3 weeks and so far are very happy with it. You'll make for sure turn heads everywhere when you grab your N800. The screen resolution of 800x480 is absolutely fantastic.
Positive : open source platform, very active community, lots of pre-packaged apps, very powerfull communication tools with its WIFI and BT. VoIP pre-installed.
Cons : not for everyone. being a Linux platform, you need sometimes to go to the system command-line level to resolve some package conflict issues.
Would recommend to every techno-geek.
Have fun with your Nokia N800 tablet.
