When my previous phone deteriorated, I decided to not take the cheap route again. I also wanted a QWERTY keyboard (I LOVE text messaging) and a calender function (I'm a forgetful person). I'm also one of those people that always has a 'list' in my pocket, whether it's a shopping list, list of things to do, or list of stuff to download (again, I'm forgetful).

I originally planned on getting a Blackberry, but I didn't like the crammed keyboard and the feeling of using a big square PDA as a phone.

For what I was looking for in a new phone, the Nokia 9300 gave me what I wanted. The keyboard is wide. The calender function is a breeze to use. And the "Write Note" feature replaced all the lists and little pieces of paper that I carried around.

Now, I've always been a Nokia fan. Their chargers are compatible with any other Nokia model, and their operating systems and menus are the easiest to navigate out of any other brand phone that I've used (had Motorola and Siemens).

With all that said, I'll get into the cons and dislikes of the phone (some of them are pretty major when considering on making a purchase like this). There are four significant dislikes that I have for this phone, but have learned to live with.

First, there is NO vibrate option. You read that correctly, no vibrate. There is no option to set it to vibrate, nor is there even a vibration motor inside the phone. I've learned to check my phone more often, but I still miss a lot of phone calls (only friends though, glad it's not my business phone).

Second, the phone is large, long, and heavy. My first phone ever was a Nokia 3390, so I've experienced large and heavy. I've also owned a Siemens SL56 (tiny tiny phone) and just previously a Motorola v551 (same OS as the Razr). I understand that in order to get the nice wide keyboard, the phone has to be made longer. However, the phone is probably one of the heaviest out there right now. And I definitely foresee future models being much slimmer.

Third, there is no camera. I just got used to having a camera with me at all times with my Motorola v551. To tell you the truth, it was a nice feature to have, but I'm doing fine without it.

Fourth, the operating system, although easy to use, can lag a bit sometimes. Most features of the phone take a few seconds to load up. I think this is common with Nokia phones. From what I remember, my 3390 had lag, and the Motorola v551 was pretty good about being quick to respond. But I don't mind the lag too much. I see it as me being spoiled in a fast paced world. A faster processor would have added a lot more to the price.

In conclusion, if the phone was lighter and slimmer, came with a camera and had vibration mode, then I would be the ultimate advocate for converting everyone in the world to buying this phone. This phone will impress your friends, until they hold it and say "man, that's heavy." But for me, right now, I love this phone!

even though the phone was delivered as said, the featres were a lie. Seller claimed its an unlocked phone and bought it. But the fact is it was not UNLOCKED. I had to pay extra get that unlocked. Also the seller promised car charger along with the phone and never sent it. My suggestion is, be caeful what you buy from this vendor.

I have owned Kyocera, Treo, and HTC "smartphones" and hands down, the nokia 9300 is in a league of it's own. Basically, a blackberry on steroids! Vast assortment of multimedia funtions (MP3 player, Video Player, html/xml web browser) and office applications (Word, powerpoint, ans spreadsheet). Nice blend of business and pleasure.

Cons:
- slightly bulky
- no wifi
- no camera

Love the phone - Hate the carrier Cingular
Review created: 02/07/07

I love this phone. I like gadgets and the like. By no means am I a techie - I have no idea what supports what or how fast what system should run with what. I just know what I like to play with and what is convenient and easy.

I was looking for a phone that I could use with ease, that would allow me to access my eBay sales and the like. Plus I wanted something that I could integrate with my PC, update my calendar, addresses, and the like. I love this phone. It provided me with all of my needs.

I started with this PDA, but was a little turned off by the weight and size - I had been using the tiny Nokia 6030 before this. So I switched to the Palm Treo, then switched again to the HP version, then again to a different smart phone. I tried about 5 different PDA's for at least 2 weeks a piece, and then returned to the Nokia 9300 - which I had liked from the get go - except for the size. After sampling all of the others I got the most out of this phone.

It has always been my experience that Nokias get the best reception. This phone absolutely does not fail - it gets reception where no other phones have been able to. I love the speaker phone - it is clear, and is activated with a simple flip of the clamshell. No buttons.

I didn't mind the no camera feature, I have always believed that cameras somehow add to the poor reception.

It would have been nice to have a vibrating ring, but the ringer can be adjusted loud.

All in all, after test driving at least 5 other PDA competitors, I totally sing praises to the Nokia 9300. Worth the $$$ if you need PDA features. I would have paid more.

My Nokia 9300 is locked with Cingular. I have been with them since they were Bell South mobility - a wopping 10 years ago. I absolutely HATE Cingular. I have been a loyal customer with the same phone company, having 11 telephone numbers, for a decade. And take it from someone who sees the quality going down - ALWAYS review your bill - they are infamous for HUGE billing errors with slow response from their lackluster customer service. That is my only big gripe with this phone - I switched to Metro PCS and my phone couldn't come with me.

Best of luck.

This phoen is amazing. Long battery life. Excellent features. Incredible display. No problems with OS locking up or rebooting as other smart phones (typically windows based have). 3rd party apps are abundant and catored for the internal display. browser exceptional.

Features found on other smart phones that aren't here:
- Camera
- 802.11
- Vibrate

Oddly enough things like the predictive text doen't work from the front display, not that there is a need with the excellent size/shape keyboard, but still found this odd.

I liked that fact that it was inexpensive and the shipping was speedy. I disliked the misinformed or outdated description that it is not all GSM compatible, but only to AT&T and Cingular. I want to send it back or resale.

  Nokia 9300 Communicator
Review created: 02/24/07
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

THE GOOD: The Nokia 9300 features a nice, wide color screen, a QWERTY keyboard, and a speakerphone. It also supports multiple e-mail accounts and Bluetooth.

THE BAD: Some downsides of the Nokia 9300 include its heft, its awkwardly placed expansion slot, its nontactile, nonbacklit keyboard, and its lack of Wi-Fi and a camera.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Nokia 9300 includes handy features for corporate users, though some of them could use work.

With the cover closed, the Nokia 9300 looks like a run-of-the-mill candy bar phone, albeit a fairly long, thick, and heavy one (5.2 by 2 by 0.8 inches and 5.9 ounces). The all-silver face is appropriately utilitarian for the 9300's target audience of mobile professionals, and Nokia keeps the design simple with a small power button on the top-right corner, a basic dial-pad layout, Talk and End buttons, two soft keys, and a five-way navigation control just below the 1.7-inch-diagonal, 65,536-color external display.

The dial pad features bright white backlighting for use in dark rooms. Our only complaint here is that it's tough to activate the left or right navigation buttons without hitting the center Select button. And because the phone doesn't have dedicated volume buttons on the side, you have to pull it away from your face during calls to adjust the sound level with the navigation keys.

I liked the phone since the firt time I had seen it. The only mistake was to buy a used phone from ebay. The phone I bought is some what defective. It works oki but sometimes it behaves in an erradic unexpected way. It does not work as a new phone and above all it does not have a nokia warranty. Besides this it is a great phone, when it comes to different functions I think it is a best phone I had ever owned.

I decided to purchase the Cingular Blackberry , the Nokia 9300. Thia was before I wanted to spend $$$ on the BlackJack (If that is the correct Name). It's big and bulky, but serves my purpose right now. I bought it becaue of the PDA features. It also is a MP3 player, so those features were something I can utilize. I will most likely upgrade to their next level of entertainment and organization soon.

  Word/Excel Problems

This is the third generation of Nokia Communicators that I have had. I liked them all but, this one is the best so far. The interior monitor is great with excellent graphics rivaling most monitors. However, the Symbian operating system leaves a lot to be desired. MS Outlook syncronizes seamlessly but, word does not fully work and Excel will not work. Excel will go into the phone but it converts to Lotus and loses most if not all of the formulas. I purchased the phone for work and am unable to fully utilize it as I wanted. I do like the phone but, I strongly suggest interested persons try one out before purchasing.

If you want a work phone to make phone calls then this is your phone. Doesn't take pictures, put it's like have a pc. Spread sheets and word documents can be upload from you computer. Takes licking and keeps on ticking. Takes alot of abuse... go to u-tube and see them pour a coke on it and still make calls. Problem with them is Cingular or ATT whatever they are calling themselves now days are no longer making them. We looked and nothing compares to the capabilites this phone has. Hate shopping via mail, but this is the only way to get this phone. Stay away from refurbish ones. kare

This item came to me on April 23, 2009 in substantially the physical condition described. But on charging the phone I found that it crashes frequently. In addition the battery does not hold a charge and the USB cable supplied does not appear to be functioning. Overall, an immense waste of my time and money. I am returning the item. I am also demanding a refund. I have paid for this item promptly and see no reason why I should receive this quality of product.

  No reception
Review created: 11/22/08

Fairly good sized and hefty smart phone with plenty of features. Nice screen and keyboard.

Absolutely miserable cellular reception (AT&T/Cingular). I currently have a Nokia 6310 and normally have adequate albeit marginal reception from my home. This phone has NONE!!!!

Very disappointing. One would think a system this size would have room for a decent antenna...

Buy the 9300i instead! (The *i* makes a big difference)
Review created: 07/08/08

This phone is pretty good over-all, I will not be discussing the pros since they are well-known, however let's speak of the cons.

First of all, the phone doesn't have a vibrating function. I really don't understand why Nokia didn't include this in this handset. So basically its virtually impossible to use this phone in a "work" or "school" environment since you have to put it on silent mode in such places and it will not vibrate to tell you who's calling or who's texting you.

Second of all T9 anyone? You'd think that you will be able to text using the T9 dictionary with the front cover closed, but no! Nokia decided to take the T9 dictionary out of this phone... Again I have no idea why... Does it really hurt that much to include it? This makes texting one handed really hard (since I am a T9 addict).

Third of all, firmware upgrades!!! They cannot be done via your computer or over-the-air, you actually have to take it to a Nokia service center or a third party shop who will perform this for you and, yup, you guessed it, it's NOT FREE! Honestly, I've never seen a firmware upgrade that is not "free" ... So it's about 30 bucks to get it updated...

Fourth of all, the keyboard is not back-lit, So if you are trying to type at night and the screen is too bright, you cannot see the keys... Well I guess you can take the brightness down, but that's yet another task to perform...

The form-factor through of this phone is very good, it's well designed, and it's shaped very well, I just wish it didn't lack the above stuff, otherwise it's an absolute keeper. It doesn't have a camera, but heck, it's supposed to be a "business" tool. It is pretty fast, much faster than many Nokia phones, there is plenty of RAM on-board, and the QWERTY is pretty good, although it's hard to press at times.

If you own this phone, do yourself a favor and install Opera Mini web browser, it's very easy to use and much better than the built-in one. If you plan to buy this phone and you love the form factor look for the (i) model (Nokia 9300i) The 9300i is a 100 folds better since it has WiFi and T9!

The IM application also doesn't support Windows Live (hotmail) you will have to install Agile-Messenger or Fring or something.

Overall I would keep it for a long time if it at least had a vibration function and a T9 dictionary.
