The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is incredibly easy to use. I was amazed at how simple it was to set up right out of the box. I've set up my Wi-Fi, my e-mail, my MMS and text settings, browser settings, used the camera, played music and videos and I still haven't consulted a manual. I have the black North American version RM-428 with GSM 850/GSM 900/GSM 1800/GSM 1900 WCDMA 850/WCDMA 1900.

»The touch screen has an interesting mechanical feedback mechanism so you know when your input has been accepted. The phone vibrates gently, as if something has tapped it. Input is very fast and precise. Menus come up very quickly and scroll very quickly, in some instances, too quickly.

»The screen is huge. There is no other word for it. It dwarfs the screen of my my N78-3. It is vibrant, fresh looking and clear.

»The phone fits comfortably in the hand, nothing sticks out of place. The sensor knows when you want landscape or portrait orientation and I've seen it make an error only once.

»By default the WiFi sniffer is turned off so to get it ready to surf the web you have make a few changes, load the pre-shared key on a secured net and then surf. This was the easiest job of loading the pre-shared key on a phone I've ever had. It surfs quickly, pages load well.

»The music player functions like you'd think it should. No surprises, good or bad here. Loudness, balance, equalizer, stereo speakers all add to the show. The speakers are a step up from those on the N78-3.

»In the box there is the 5800 XpressMusic device with pen stylus, Battery (BL-5J 1320 mAh Li-Ion), High Efficiency Charger (AC-8U), Music Headset (HS-45, AD-54), Video-out Cable (CA-75U), Connectivity Cable (CA-101D) the "D" stands for demented joke, 8 GB microSDHC card (MU-43), Stand (DT-29), Stylus plectrum in wrist strap (CP-306), User guide and Quick guide, Mini DVD. The MU-43 comes with some songs and a few other things on it.

»Battery life is good. You'll always want more. The physical size of the battery is huge. Imagine a battery the width and thickness of the BP-5M but at least half again as long.

»The applications include the usual calculator sort of stuff, plus some Nokia toys such as a multi-language dictionary.

»Being an S60 driven device there are many applications, add-ons and widgets to expand the utility of the device. One of note is the β level handwriting calculator available from the Ovi application store for free. You'll never use the stock calculator again!

»The microSDHC that comes in the device is 8 gigabytes. That's large but I know it can be filled. Not to worry. It will accept up to a 16 GB card.

»The 5800 XpressMusic isn't noticeably larger nor heavier than the N78. The screen is much larger, the GPS is quicker, the sound is better. It lacks FM transmitter and Internet Radio but otherwise is fully outfitted.

My toughest choice is: T-Mobile or AT&T SIM? Both work!

» 3G Notes: With T-Mobile I'm giving up 3G because the 5800 doesn't have the 1700/2100 AWS band. The 5800 does EDGE on T-Mobile very well. On AT&T I get 3.5G downloads and 3G calling.

» Firmware V31.2.101 is now available as of 11/2009. V20 was shipping as recently as 30 May 2009. This is a 128 megabyte update.

» After six months of use this phone looks and acts like new with no "stupid stuff" cropping up along the way. This appears to be a really good, sturdy model.

  Nokia 5800 XpressMusic US Version

I was impressed with the size and the build quality of the phone. I also thought I wouldn't like the interface since I've seen the Iphone interface and considers it the best. But when I started using the 5800, I got comfortable with the user interface easily. Everything works as it should. The music player and the external speaker quality is incredible. It is loud and clear. My daughter thought I had a desktop speaker connected to my music player. She realized it was just the phone speakers afterwards and she was also impressed as well. Overall, I think this is a good alternative to the Iphone because of the cheaper price and tons of functionality. I highly recommend it!!!

Ok 1st thing is when ever any new touchscreen phone comes out it compared to the Iphone. Well I want every one to know that for the price point this is my version of the Iphone. It does everything the iphone does and more. The only area I can see where the Iphone has it beat is how many apps Apple has. I love this Nokia and it does what ever I want it to do. Oh yeah and it has nice music player with regular head phone jack. I even can send a text with any picture attached to it to my brother who has an Iphone 3 and he can't pull it up but my wife who has a BB curve can. So if you want a phone that does everything well for less than half the cost of a more cash costly Apple Iphone then this is the one for you. Nokia 5800 A++++

Great cell phone! I like the big screen, it rotates when you rotate the phone in every application, the sound through the speakers is really awesome and the flash is very usefull to take pictures with low light.
What I like and use most is the GPS feature.
It also comes with a lot of accesories, a cable to see the pictures and videos in the TV, a kind of tripod, radio, earphones, etc.

Best among Nokians but not better than iphone!!

Desigining
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a simple tablet-based touchscreen mobile. Composed completely of plastic, it doesn't have the feel of a very expensive device, but it takes a beating and keeps going better than most.

Screen looks great... indoors. At 640 by 360 pixels, it's hard to find a device this small (3.2in screen, 111mm long by 51mm wide) that has this many pixels packed onto its surface. This means that photos, text, and web pages just look fantabulous.

Truthfully though, its not a busy device. The buttons while finger-friendly in feel, seem just a bit hard to reach all around. And the placement of the SIM and microSDHC slots on the let side seem great at first, but are a fingernail's nightmare to get open at times. However, weight is excellent (109g), and it feels like any other well-weighted candybar mobile when placed next to your head on in a pocket. Plus, the long/thin nature of the design is very pocket friendly.
Touchscreen Input: While the 5800XM is not Nokia's first touchscreen product, it is the first one that utilizes the Symbian S60 operating system. A new version, S60v5, opens up the ability for the OS to utilize a touchscreen interface. With the 5800XM, this is a mixed bag.

On the 5800XM you get to touch, but its UI is not at all similar to the iPhone, Iphone is much further from it!!. There are still too many steps to do things such as cut-and-paste, or move files from one folder to another. In addition, much of the default software is simply the same version that it is on the non-touchscreen Symbian S60 devices, without any optimization.

Performance
The 369 MHz processor is buffered by a 1320 mAh battery, Wi-Fi, GPS (with A-GPS), Bluetooth 2.0, a 3.5 mm a/v jack, and mounds of software. It's not positioned as a conventional or enterprise smartphone, however; it's a music and multimedia themed one. And given its smartphone roots, it pulls off this aspect of use reasonably well.
Music and Multimedia: Let me first say, this device has some of the best speakers that I've ever heard on a mobile device. And definitely the loudest. Music, alarms, voice calls, whatever -- these are some really great speakers and easily makes the 5800XM an alarm clock replacement.

On the optical media side, the 3.2 megapixel digital camera proves to be the only real let-down. Sure, the dual-LED, VGA video capture, digital zoom, and finger-friendly menus are great, but it's the final product that's a significant disapointment. Even with a few major firmware releases under its belt, the 5800XM is a really poor camera. Photos not only come out grainy and noisy, but they are over-sharpened and underexposed. This is not at all the best mobile to choose for a camera solution.

Being that it's a Nokia, the phone aspects are very solid. Speaker and microphone are very clear. The speakerphone, as stated before, loud and clear at all volume levels. Pairing Bluetooth devices is easy, and call management is made easier with the Contacts bar for your frequent contacts.

Final onclusions: If you wana spend >400USD then opt for iphone rather than 5800, otherwise next option is this one.

thanks

I bought the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and immediately got surprised with the additional features available. Higher resolution Camera, intuitive touch screen and excellent shortcuts to many handy operations. The touch screen has a similar good feel like moving from manual to auto gear.

I just simply love this phone, never has other brand than Nokia. It has too many features and it´s so simple to use. Besides, it´s small, lightweight and well constructed. Of course it´s not perfect, there´s no such a thing made by humans at this time, but is a very trustful phone in a small package.

We will see after a couple of years of use, perhaps can resist more than me!

the phone i really love, i am new to the touch thing but i have gotten use to it easily, very very fun phone. some of my friends don't like it just because they have an iphone, and prefer that over it but i think otherwise. it has a better camera OS and it is unlocked to any network, so your warranty will remain on the phone, without having the worry to unlock your phone, also just look at the price diff.

My 1ast hp was a Nokia 3810 in 1997 and I am always a Nokia fan,in a contrary,my last Nokia mobilephone was 7610(2005??)Since then no Nokia hp can caught my eyes until 5800.During the pre launch at Starhub located at Tampines Mall,I was telling myself this would be the NK model that I would have, after the exile of 4yrs for Nokia hp.
My few main focus for a hp are big screen,loud/clear onboard speakers and good battery life.Well, 5800 had fulfiled my wishes somehow or rather.Maybe the batt life coulde better. The most interesting function that I like most in 5800, the wallpaper could be set in a slide show mode with time varies from 1min to ......to share, I am e soul tt change my wallpaper often and with this function,my worries no more......
As for the cons, hmm.the camera is vast room for improvement and the batt since to be not so accurate. It will indicate full bar for many hours of heavy usage n give u e impression tt it has great batt life. However,it will decline suddenly from full bar to last 3-4 bar after u reboot the hp.That is kind of strange....overall 5800 is a very good hp to recommend for people like me,like to change wall papers frequently..

The Phone came right when we thought it would and it was in original packaging. It was beautiful. It works like a dream. Its almost a remedy for wanting to drive and txt for it is much harder to do, but just another challenge. The applications you can get off the nokia web site are very good. All the items that came in the box were in pristine shape. Definitely original packaging.

This is by far the best cell phone I have ever owned. I have used several other touch screen phones (including iPhone) and none of them compare to the easy use and vast features of the Nokia 5800. I would recommend this phone to anyone who is shopping around. I use mine on the AT&T (USA) network and the service is generally 3.5g everywhere I go. Blazing fast internet! The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. Switching between apps has never been easier too! It is simply the best. Nokia did a stand up job. They are the Bently of cell phones. I am thinking of purchasing the N97 for a second phone soon. You should get a screen protector with this phone. I do not recommend a mirror one, tried it and couldn't see the screen. And a belt holster or case (since the touch screen is a bit softer than those on other makes) which is one thing...the only thing...Nokia should have taken into account when making this phone, was having a hard touch screen surface. (like an iPhone or the new Blackberry) The built in stylus will not scratch the screen, its actually very nice and easy to use...but almost anything else will so like I mentioned before, purchase some screen protection. Using the phone with my computer is very simple as well! I actually threw my Ipods out when I bought this phone so I would not have to deal with iTunes or that Apple store... The phone is basically a 16gig flash drive! copy n' paste is all it takes. The Nokia programs that come with it are nice and have a very user friendly interface, but I get my music using other means so I have no need for it. The photo image editor is really nice. The camera on this phone is AWSOME too! I mean real clarity here folks, this thing is amazing! Download all the free apps in the Ovi store and update your current apps once you get it out of the box and you are all set to play! Dont get too hooked on Bounce Touch its very fun and addicting game and comes free on the phone. Thats it from me! Good luck!

One of the best phones of 2008-2009
Review created: 06/24/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not going to write a technical, detailed, encyclopedia-like review here. This is basically one of the best phones you'll ever come across.

Firstly, it's very straightforward and easy to use.

Secondly, the screen is huge - and bright. It's very satisfying.

Thirdly, the phone is light. It's not heavy like other touch-screen phones.

Fourthly, you won't meet too many people who are displeased with this phone. It has one of the highest ratings in the world, and it's also ranked in the top 5 on GSM Arena, one of the largest sites for phone reviews and specs.

The Nokia 5800 has amazing audio and visual, as well as two cameras (3.2 Mega pixel Carl Zeiss).

Obviously, there's Bluetooth (2.0), as well as Wi-fi (internet access), 3G network, and a built-in GPS receiver.

The java applications on the phone work very well, and the phone doesn't really freeze up as much as other Symbian OS phones.

The look of the phone only adds on to the delight of such a product, which is hopefully only the beginning of futuristic phones to come.

Phone works great with AT&T and have nothing but nice things to say about the phone itself. The OS is the best I've ever used on a touch screen and the screen is beautiful. The camera is a little lackluster in my opinion so that's why I only rated it good and not excellent.
