Album Notes Only his fourth studio album, NOEL finds Josh Groban already tackling that canonical mainstay of the adult contemporary singer, the Christmas album. As always, NOEL is a masterfully performed set, balanced neatly between pop standards and the more operatic material that showcases Groban's roots. Interestingly, he sounds best on the most familiar holiday standards, like "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song," both of which he invests with casual, jazzy phrasing, providing a welcome disinclination for the usual Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby homages that many other young singers in the style fall into. Even this early into his career, Groban clearly has a deeply held sense of who he is as a singer and interpreter, and this lovely collection is proof that he's one of the most exciting adult contemporary stars to appear in ages. | See an error? As if Josh's deep, rich voice weren't enough reason to own this album, he recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra. The arrangements are just spectacular! THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY amazed me O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL inspired me and I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS made me cry. I feel like I've been to his concert again. Buy the album, you won't be sorry. I rushed out to Target ASAP on 9 Oct to buy this CD (with the Target exclusive DVD), and had to go to another store to buy it because it was sold out at the first one. My efforts were rewarded, and on the first note Josh sang it was more than worth the money, gas, and time. "I'll Be Home for Christmas", featuring messages from American troops deployed overseas, is so touching that you'd have to have a heart of stone not to be moved to (or almost to) tears. His take on "Ave Maria", an already ethereal and beautiful song, is jaw-dropping. His duets with Faith Hill and Bryan McKnight are quite good, and the inclusion of a rather obscure (in the US) French song ("Petit Papa Noel")--included because Josh thought the song title was "so cute" (his words, verbatim)-- and the stand-out guitar work on "Little Drummer Boy" added that something extra and unique to otherwise mostly familiar songs. This is the album you've been waiting for for the last 6 years. You won't be disappointed. Review ID: 10000000004579570 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
