Another fine collection from Suzy Bogguss, whose knack for choosing superior material is displayed in full force here. Despite the fact that her voice is more coffeehouse than honky tonk, Bogguss manages to make NOBODY LOVE, NOBODY GETS HURT unmistakably country--with a twist. Songs like "I Wish Hearts Could Break," "When I Run" and "From Where I Stand" feature thoughtful lyrics, often tricky melodies, and great delivery on the part of Bogguss. The title track, "Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt," is a cleverly written tale of a man who holds up a convenience store, but misspells a key word in the note he passes to the clerk. While it's an amusing story, in Bogguss' hands the song becomes a meditation on how wounds we've suffered in the past drive us to do wrong. Bogguss also brings in some big names--Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Mattea and Alison Krauss--to sing harmony with her, to great effect. The standout track just may be "Take Me Back," a haunting, bluegrass flavored song that features high lonesome vocals by none other than Garth Brooks. Fans looking for style and substance will find both in abundance on this CD.
