Although Rebecca Lynn Howard began her career as a songwriter in Nashville, her solo recording career has found her balancing country roots with elements of adult contemporary and other genres. On NO RULES, the singer-songwriter's third album, Howard rewrites the rulebook again, moving from Nashville's slick country-pop to a lean, gritty sound that draws primarily on blues, roots rock, funk, and R&B. NO RULES is suffused with the raw Southern soul associated with Muscle Shoals, Alabama (where the album was recorded), as Howard burns through 10 originals and a handful of covers (including "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" and the churning Temptations hit "Shakey Ground"). "New Twist on an Old Groove" and "Just Let It Burn" also are highlights.
