I absolutely loved this movie, so much that I've seen it 4 times. This is a typical Coen Brothers movie, much in the same class as Fargo or even Raising Arizona where as there's much talking and dry, dark humor in between the action and excessive violence. But what makes this movie fantastic are Brolin and Bartram. Both of their charecter's are played to the hilt and from two seperate sides of the fence.
Brolin is the good old boy cowboy/blue collar guy who stumbles across a drug deal gone wrong and a satchel full of money. With all the participants in the deal dead or near death, he does what every intelligent American would do, take the money and lay low. Unfortunately for him, his identity is discovered (because he offers one of the dying drug dealers water when he stupidly returns to the scene of the crime)and then the movie becomes a cat and mouse chase, with the cold blooded killer Bartram hot on Brolin's tail. I don't want to spoil the movie if you haven't seen it but Bartram is incredible as a psycho homicidal killer who is both scary and innovated in his killing ways. The blood and gore are filmed both close up and graphically, so it's not for those with weak stomachs.
If I can say anything negative about the film, it's the open ending to the film and not having the knowledge of what happens to Bartram's charecter. Even with those factors, the film is both mesmerizing and stylish, and I give it two thumbs up for all those who like both the Coen brothers and shoot-em up intelligent films. Don't miss this one !

If you liked Fargo, you'll love this one !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This movie was just horrible, The story line was ok and easy to follow. Just way way to much violance, people are killed in this movie from start to finish. It was a waste of my money and time. Do your self a favor buy something else.

I first seen the movie in the theater, and loved it. It had a really good story that held the suspense all through out the flick. Great movie to watch, but not with the ladies unless she's into thrillers.

One of the BEST Thrillers by the Coen Brothers, a must
Review created: 08/11/08

This Thriller is truly an instant "Must See". It is so well produced! Authentic and such a plausible plot in the setting of West Texas. It is a simple plot with complex twists. So well acted that you are "sucked" into the plot. Hoping for the innocent locals, but realizing they are caught up into a situation where they are clearly overmatched. They cannot escape their inevitable fate!!

  Hyper violent-oh yeah!

I bought this dvd because it won awards and was a largely top rated movie from the critics. It has a lot of action and plenty of gore and violence. It has some slow parts too-usually with Tommy Lee Jones, but his performance was excellent too. It moved along very well and had a few parts that make you laugh. It was filmed in such a way that it wasn't like other films of it's genre and had many interesting shots and angles. The Coen brothers are usually good like that. I like many others didn't like how it ended, but overall it was a good flick. B+ or A-

Wow! With the Coen brothers behind the camera, and Tommy Lee Jones in front of the lens, what else could you possibly expect? but... one teriffic movie.

In my opinion, there are many actors whose appeal has faded because of being type cast too many times as the same perdictible character. Tommy Lee Jones is the exception. I never tire of seeing him playing a West Texas cowboy. I've seen most of his movies, and he has become one of my very favorite actors over the years. In No Country for Old Men, the rule isn't broken, but the direction the movie takes--keep in mind--is the product of the Coen Brothers. Thus, teriffic performances by a great cast, and a typical Coen movie (what a contridiction of terms!!!). In the final scene, I got the strangest urge to jump into the film, take a double barrell 12 and shoot that sorry SOB in his good arm. But that isn't possible, and like potato chips, one helping of this movie just isn't enough. So I watched it again.

Unlike any other movie I've seen

This movie didn't get much buzz until it was nominated for a ton of awards, and it's much deserving. It's about one guy chasing another guy, who's getting chased by some other guy, and it has an ending that not typical of most movies. Totally worth the $10 to own!

This movie was very interesting right up until the ending. Good acting, good plot and interesting characters. The ending really could have been better though, not sure why they chose to end it like they did.

Tommy Lee Jones is always one of my favorites, but this movie seems kinda dragging and slow. It did have an excitement moment from time to time, but not the best movies he has played in.....

This movie is great in every respect. Storytelling, cinematography, characters, sound, costume, building up suspense like a can of Reddi Whip. I watched this movie twice, and I think only the second time around was I able to confirm some of my theories regarding the movie. Its one of those movies that really gets in your head long after the credits are done rolling. At the end of the movie, you are left wondering who was the real protagonist of this story, if there was any at all. Like that narrator says near the end of the film, we each like to believe we are the main character of God's created story- when in truth, we have no effect- through good or evil, on the greater picture- it doesn't get worse or better, it just goes on as it always does...so then what, in effect, is the purpose of our existence? And the wonderful irony of the two characters caught in similar situations- one in the middle of the movie, one near the end. Its those little things like that which make this movie a good one to own, because each time you watch it, you hear things, and interpret things a little bit clearer.

And all the characters are memorable and so unique from each other. You will never see a page-boy hair cut the same after this movie!

  A Southwest Texas Cautionary Tale
Review created: 05/26/08

A powerful and haunting story; with strong characters portrayed by skilled actors; a storyline and a script based on a very disturbing book; a cautionary tale that grabs a hold of you immediately and won't let go until all of the story has been told.

Surprisingly, the real main character of this story actually receives very little in the way of screen credits. Southwest Texas-as dry and hard as you can find-is the setting; beautiful, desolate, and completely unforgiving. But captured very well by the filmmakers-which only adds authenticity to the story
and it's characters.

But if you're looking for happy endings, with the hero riding off in the sunset with the heroine; this movie will disappoint you. And if I had simply depended on the word of mouth reviews from the average movie patron; I might have missed this cinematic masterpiece. Because this is a movie you will not be neutral about-either you will really love it or really hate it.

Powerful, unrelenting, and compelling-with no happy ending or just reward on the horizon. But give it the time it deserves-watch it uninterrupted or distracted-and appreciate cinematic magic when it happens-because this movie will likely stay with you for some time.

Review created: 05/21/08(updated 06/05/08)

Loved it loved it. But I love Tommy Lee Jones. This movie is really good but even in the end leaves much to be pondered upon. It's a must see for everyone atleast once. I bought it after watching at the movie theatre just to catch things I know I missed the 1st time around.

One word: Masterpiece. The Coen Brothers best work yet!
Review created: 05/14/08

I actually first saw this film at a festival about a year ago and have been obsessed with it ever since. I celebrate the Coen Brothers entire catalog, but they truly outdid themselves with this picture. If Javier Bardem doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up the ENTIRE movie, you're not human. Not only the best movie of 2007, but the best film I've seen in years.

The first time I watched this movie - it was unsettling....the brutality; the coldness of Javier Bardem as the killer actually left me "nervous". Then my son (an adult) was over and I watched it since he had not seen it. I couldn't believe what I missed the first time around! Bardem's character was actually comical (black comedy so to speak). The scene in the desert when his comrad actually disappeared (ran) due to feeling "he was next" and Bardem's body language/reaction! The scene at the gas station when he almost choaked when the owner stated he "married into this business"; his blank look when pulled the shower curtain in the motel and shot the mexican; the straight look when blew up the car in front of the pharmacy! I am really impressed with this movie and fantastic acting by Jones, Bardem and Brolin!
