Album Notes Producers: Jane Siberry, Jon Goldsmith, Kerry Crawford, John Switzer. Her fellow Canadians had already embraced the eccentric and beautiful songwriting and distinctive vocal acrobatics on a previous album, but this widely distributed 1984 release was the rest of the world's first delicious sip of the artist formerly known as Jane Siberry (now called Issa). It spawned the college-radio hit "Mimi on the Beach," still something of a signature tune. The pure melodic brilliance of the songs shines through despite some admittedly '80s-damaged production, revealing an artist still at the cusp of her greatness. Shifty tempos, uplifting chord progressions, and multitracked keyboards prevail on the songs "I Muse Aloud," "The Waitress," and "Mimi," but Siberry also enchants as a balladeer on the sad, wandering "You Don't Need." The lyrics are poetic and more often than not quite spiritual; NO BORDERS HERE is not just a great title for a great album, but a call to arms of sorts for Siberry's insistent desire to transcend labels and superficialities, and lift herself and her listeners right off the map.
