You wouldn't think that a book like this would be hard to put down. Well it is. Reads like a powerful mystery. The reason I bought it was that I had heard Dr. Owlsey speak in person and He is as compeling as the book I certainly will visit the Simthsonion to see his exibit.

Great start that gets tangled up in the legal world

The book begins and captures your fasination with anthropological forensics. The concept of taking a pile of bones and creating an approximation of who, what and why of a deceased individual is interesting. I fully understand the American Indian's concern on desecration of their deceased. Later the book deals with the impact of bureaucracies on getting to reasonable understanding of past cultures. It was an enjoyable read although the last chapters were wearisome.

I am an amateur anthropologist and find that human remains tell a story on many levels,if we just pay attention. This book includes coverage of both modern crime cases and analysis of ancient remains. Owlsley was scheduled to study the remains of Kennewick Man but the gov't seized them to give to the Native american tribe that claimed them. His response was to sue the gov't over custody of the remains. I sympathise with Native Americans due to the long tradition of abuse they have suffered at the hands of the gov't but I also understand why Owlsley wants the remains for study. Kennewick Man is a hugely important find scientifically;also, there's no hard evidence of ties to the tribe who want the remains. Yes,it's apparent that I believe Kennewick should be studied. Decide for yourself---read this book !
