Synopsis Though NEVERMIND was the album that exploded Nirvana into worldwide rock stardom, Kurt Cobain felt it was too polished and poppy, and for their follow-up album he recruited independent producer Steve Albini to help them create a more raw and pure sound. Recording in a snowed-in studio in Minnesota, the band kept all industry executives away, played the drums in a kitchen for the natural reverb, and gave Cobain complete creative control over the takes. The record studio DGC thought the album was too harsh, and wanted to redo the album from scratch, but Cobain insisted that he had made the album he wanted, and IN UTERO, in addition to selling millions of copies, has become considered, by critics and by the members of Nirvana itself, to be the album the band will be remembered for. Gillian G. Gaar's NIRVANA'S IN UTERO examines the many factors--personal, commercial, and artistic--that went into making this grunge masterpiece.
