Combining the physical and the virtual for oldsters

My friend Dre got a Wii last Christmas, and I played for the first time with her nephews at a holiday party at her home. The graphics are excellent, as well as the sound effects and overall concept of the specific sports. One to leap in, I tried the tennis first and was astonished to note that my actual ability with a racket on the court did not help me much in the Wii version, since my energetic pursuit of corner shots and overhead slams did not garner me as many points as simply meeting the incoming ball with video-world timing and force. I learned for myself about the attraction of onscreen gaming and even got a bit of a workout (more with boxing, less with bowling and golf). Recommended for Baby Boomers who have not yet discovered WOW or texting and; yet, my two granddaughters, 17 and 9, had to be pulled away from their Wii play on their first go at it because it was so user-friendly and fun for them. Have someone else connect the Wii to your tv - bigger and clearer such as flat-screen is better - and the hand-held attachments are obvious and easy to figure out.
