GameCube's still got it!
The newest system I had before purchasing my used GameCube this year was an N64! The years following elementary school, my parents didn't buy my siblings and I new consoles, so we would play at our friend's houses and be awed by the cool graphics, new memory card system, and tiny discs the games had become.
Although I like the novelty of cartridge games, the GameCube is extremely portable, with a mini CD holder and a grab of the console's handle, you're on your way.
There is a good selection of games. For Nintendo, quality definitely stands above quantity, and the range of games for the system definitely stand above other systems of its generation in terms of uniqueness, innovation, and game play styles.
If you never bothered getting your hands on the system and can't afford a Wii, I suggest buying a used GameCube for around $20 (+shipping) on ebay. You can definitely find a good deal and great games for a bargain!
