The ONLY reason this didnt get 5/5 was because there was no backlight. I mean. Hello? Nintendo? When you were testing these things were you outside in broad day light or what? Most of us play in the convience of our home or our cars which have not that good of light. So really the only way you can see your screen is to go outside in broad daylight, or shine a light on your screen.. which creates a horrible glare.

Everything else about this system is BEAUTIFUL. They added L and R. The screen is big. There's a HUUUGE library of games for it. It's backwards compatable with GBC and GB games! This is cool!

The graphics are a LOT better. They are rich and colorfull. They have shading.. The sound is a lot better. There are even voices in some games.

There's not really much else you can say about it.. besides it rocks.

Here's a MINI list of some of the games I've had a good experience with: (There's too many to list ALL of them! XP)

Pokemon Ruby + Sapphire + Emerald
Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak
Hamtaro: Rainbow Rescue (Not yet released in US)
Hamtaro: Ham Ham Games
Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland
Kirby + The Amazing Mirror
Zelda: Minish Cap
Naruto Games (Not in US yet)
Sonic Advanced 1,2,3
Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
Mother 1+2 (Not released in US =((((((()
Pokemon Pinball R/S

  Nintendo game boy advance
Review created: 07/08/06

I purchased 3 the nintendo game boy advance for my 3 sons. I figured it would occupy their time in the car on long trips, boring rainy days at home. They do not take much to operate, for example I have a 4 year old that doesn't leave home without it. Another good point is I don't have to worry much about them being extra careful with not dropping it and ruining the game becaue they are real sturdy.

GBA Isn't Backlighted?!? Wow, I thought it was broken!!
Review created: 07/26/07(updated 02/06/08)
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I already have an Original (4 AA Batteries) Game Boy, a Game Boy Pocket, and a Game Boy Advance SP. I really didn't need or want a Game Boy Advance. I went to a thrift shop a few hours ago and saw a Game Boy Advance Glacier for $9.99. It was in excellent condition but was missing the battery cover. This unit was sold with a "The Legend Of Zelda Oracle of Seasons" Game Boy Color game. They were having a half-price sale so I got the Game Boy Advance AND Zelda game for only $4.99!! I came home and placed two AA batteries into the Game Boy and turned it on... it fired right up but the screen was really dark!! My first thought... "Oh this sucks!! It's broken!! No wonder it was donated to the thrift shop!!" I was looking for a glacier battery cover for this item when I came across all of your reviews about the Game Boy Advance and read that these units ARE NOT backlighted and the screens are supossed to be dark!! (Guess I'll stick to playing my Game Boy Advance SP.) I can't complain too much being that I still got a really good deal. I'm not out any money because the Zelda game was already worth the $4.99 that I paid. The only problem now is that it'll cost me more to replace the missing battery cover than what the whole unit + game cost me to begin with!! Happy gaming folks!!
******************************************************************************
UPDATE: (07/28/07) Obtained a OEM Glacier colored battery cover to replace the one that was missing on the unit. Other than the non-backlit screen, everything is fine now!!

One good reason to get a Game Boy Advance is for the Nintendo e-reader add-on device. If I'm not mistaken, the only way that you can use the e-reader is either with the Game Boy Player for the Nintendo Game Cube OR the Game Boy Advance. Even though the Game Boy Advance SP is newer, the e-reader will NOT work with it.

I purchased the Game Boy so that each of my grandchildren would have one for a 9-hour road trip. I had previously purchased 2 others on E-Bay, but found that the youngest grandchild wanted one as well. They worked quite well to keep them occupied on the trip.

I liked the system because it can be used to play a number of different games. The only disadvantage to it was that then the kids fought over the same game!

Spend your money on the SP instead

The whole idea of having a portable game system is great. However, the fact that there is no light source is really disappointing. I am a 37 y/o mom who purchased a Gameboy Advance SP model for my son and decided to try the regular Advance model for my 4 y/o daughter (to save a little cash). That was a big mistake. She hardly ever touched it because she couldn't see the game. I tried all of the lights that are out there, the worm light, the xeon light, etc...none of them lit up the screen without being intrusive and casting a terrible glare on the screen. If you can just hold out a little longer, save the extra money and get the SP model AGS 101. You can even get the SP model AGS 001 here on ebay (used) for just a little more than the regular advance system. The 001 has a backlight built in that you can turn on-which my daughter leaves on at all times-otherwise the screen looks just like the regular advance screen. The 101 (which is what is in the stores now) has a backlit screen at all times and you can push a button to make it even brighter if you so choose.

If you are a mom/dad who may want to get that younger sibling a game system so they leave big brother or sister's alone, heed my advice and skip on the Advance system-get the SP instead.

Gameboy Advance - good graphics but hard to see
Review created: 08/08/06

I was actually torn between a rating of 3 or 2. The controls are user friendly but the screen is so dark. I know gameboy was a huge hit when it was popular, but I think alot of those kids who owned one wear glasses today. I need to sit in direct sunlight or a very bright indoor light to see it well. I bought a "halo" light to go with it and it helps alot!!! But honestly, I'd spend more money to get the Gameboy Advance SP since the screen is backlit and so so so much better.

When this unit first came out I would have given it a 5 out of 5. Due to the release of the newer Gameboy Advance SP and Gameboy Micro units though I can only give this one a 4. This lower rating is due solely to the unit having no backlight. It works fine if you are in a dark room and have a lamp over your should but otherwise it isn't so great. There are a ton of strange attachments for the unit that try to provide light during play but none of them work really super great. Unless you are playing in perfect lighting conditions then prepare to strain your eyes. While in perfect lighting conditions though this is a really great unit. There are thousands of games that you can play and some of the newer GBA games are really awesome. My favorite is Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.

If you are a true game boy fan and you have not yet purchased an advance I would definately go out and purchase this one its just what you would expect from Nintendo tuff durable made of a ver sturdy construction this is an excelent addition to the Nintendo Game boy family. Nintendo Game boy has maintained a very decient reputation do to extending the game boy product line exstensively with every new edition to the Game boy family. This edition is no different with very good handleing and light weight design after a serious sit down with this id have to say classic game play in a modernized form , another great adition to the Nintendo family...

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Handheld game system
Review created: 12/26/06

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great game system and I personally have enjoyed it, the main thing to be careful of is that (on the back side) the battery case will usually break off, so use caution when taking off to replace batteries, or just have extra backs on hand. The Gameboy Advance System is all-in-all great because it will play both Gameboy games and Game Boy Advance Games--If using an original Game Boy game, it will convert the ordinary grayish colors to actual colors!! This is a great game system and will last quite a while for just about anyone!

  Dim and Dimmer
Review created: 10/03/06
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The only thing keeping this game from being a GREAT handheld game system is the display, it is so dim that it really limits where you can play the game, the only way to make this game playable in different lighting situations is if you buy an optional compatible Game Boy light. Without the optional light attachment I bought I would never play this game at all and even with the light it is still pretty dim, but at least playable.

This was a used Game Boy Advance. It was bought as a birthday gift for my 5 year old granddaughter who lives in Europe. I did not try it before I left.I also bought 4 used games. But it could not be used unless you were outside with direct light shining on the screen. This was a big disapointment, needless to say it was of no enjoyment as a birthday gift.

You can't see the screen unless you are under direct lighting. I bought one used for $50. Had it for a day and sold it to a second hand store for $9.99 and bought the Nintendo DS. Much better than the Game Boy Advance.

This is an excellent product for a child. The design is kind of bulky compared to the GBA SP. The play on it and the ease of use for a child is excellent. The backlighting on it is kind of poor. I bought this particular one for my child and as stated that is what I feel that this design is best for. The price is fair for a video game system.

I bought this for my 6 year old son and he really loves it but the fact that it doesn't have a backlight bothers me. I see him struggling to see the screen better. I just wish the screen lit up or it had some sort of backlight. Other than that....very cool.
