The DS LITE-R than Ever! By a Geekette

I'm gonna be honest here. I have EVERY version of the Nintendo GameBoy EVER created. I kid you not. From the really thick and clunky ugly gray colored one with the purple A-B buttons, to the "we're copying off the Sega Genesis PlayGear body" Gameboy Advance first incarnation... to today's wicked cool DS "I'm in love with it" Lite. I am a GameBoy fiend-ess.

Actually, the DS Lite is the hottest electronic handheld video game device in Japan right now. (It's more popular over there than the PSP is, actually, whereas the PSP is more popular than the DS Lite is over here. Got it? Yeah.) Personally, I think each platform has it's own strengths and weaknesses, that make both of them, well... you're just gonna want to have 'em both to play with. Like I do.

When The first incarnation of DS came out, it was much heavier - with a thicker case, the screen light was less luminous (it didn't shine as bright), and the screens were smaller. There were also a few other things that (kept losing that darn stylus) drove gamers nuts.

So, after hearing the many complaints from mass market video gamers (like yours truly), Nintendo went back to the DS drawing board and did a little redesigning. They ended up with: the DS LITE.

DS LITE has a much thinner and lighter-in-weight case. It's smaller in its overall size, as well, making it much more of a pocket Gaming Device, more like a PalmTop PC, really. It also comes, as a bonus, in three colors: Onyx (black); Ice (white); and Blush (pink). The viewing screens on the top have and the touch screen on the bottom half have been enlarged a bit, which it great. Less eyestrain, and more room to write messages with your stylus (a problem with the former DS). The viewing light in the screens is also much brighter, so now you can realy see what's going on in a darkened environment. The button placement has been changed, too. They've been placed to fit your hand's natural position when it holds the game device, evened outfrom the touch screen, parallel wiht each other, so you won't end up with cramps after playing for long periods of time. The sound has even improved. It doesn't sound like your listening inside a tin can anymore, thanks to speaker re-placement.

They even redesigned where the stylus is kept. It's now pocketed and locked in into the base of the DS Lite, safely tucked away, camouflaged, where it won't catch on anything, or just fall out, like it used to do. AND, they supply you with one extra stlyus, just in case you do lose it. Bonus!

The DS Lite can play old GB, GBC, and GBA games (Legacyware games - uh - old Gameboy games) and new GBA games from the larger cartridge slot on the base of the DS Lite. When not in use, the DS Lite comes with a fake, plastic, removable cartridge to insert to keep that slot protected from dust and debris. Cool, huh? the top slot is used for playing DS/DS Lite Touchpad games. And with all the new touch-screen enabled games coming out for the platform, well...

The touch screen also enables you to send written messages and pictures over Wi-Fi to other DS/DSLite users, via a chat utility called "Pictochat" that comes standard already loaded in.

However, unlike the PSP, you can't play MP3s or store files on the DS Lite, or play Homebrew or emulators. And, with the PSP, you can't use an interactive touchscreen. But, both are Wi-Fi. Like I said earlier, give and take. You might as well get both. There are plenty of games out there to satisfy users of both platforms...

Fun to play but with a few flaws.

This is a great game system. With the Nintendo DS Lite, a stylus is used on most of the game play making it for a unique, fun experience. So far, all the games I've purchased for it have been easy to use. The only problem that I have come across is that some of the pixels don't have color on the screen making it appear as if you have a "dot" or something in the screen...ie..lint or dust spot. The other problem I have run into is the stylus not being completely smoothe and therefore making it feel a little scratchy on the screen. I easily exchanged my Nintendo DS for one w/out a pixel problem and was good to go after that. It's a fun game system and the sound quality is great, too. I have the black one and I'm not sure what type of material is used for the casing, but it's that kind of platic material that picks up every single fingerprint, kind of annoying in my opinion but I'm sure not bothersome to most. As will all game systems, the accessories are pretty pricey. Once you buy one thing, you're going to want another, so get the pocket book ready.

The Ninteno DS Lite is in my oponion the best hand held game system out there. The use of the sylus puts the game play for hand helds in a totally different zone of its own. The technology used in the system is awesome. For example in Zelda, you actually blow on the screen to blow out candles and remove dust of a map, etc. In certain games you have to speak at certain volumes or lengths of time to activate something. This is a game system that I would recommend for any age.

The Nintendo DS Lite is by far the best hand-held console available on the market. The variety of games available and touch screen function make it rate much higher on the hand- held console market than its competition from Sony – the PSP.

  Redesigned For Play

There is so much going on within the handheld wars of video gaming between Nintendo & Sony right now. Sony has tried to deliver with their Playstation handheld, PSP for all gamers who would want to enjoy the cusdtoms of PS2 on the go. While that might be a bottleneck with how much you'd spend money for memory cards, and video games itself which are as high as PS2 games, there just could be more. Nintendo however has showcased a big success with the dominant status of the Game Boy Advance SP which has been the most successful handheld video game system of all time, and the stride of the Nintendo DS which was released a few years ago. Now Nintendo has reenergized the Nintendo DS for all gamers, better than ever.

The Nintendo DS Lite, is a sleeker, redesigned Nintendo DS that delivers better than the original edition. It is thinner than the earlier DS, but it still delivers what the original DS had before. You still can play your Game Boy Advance games here like before, you still can use the WI-FI adapter, and other accessories from before. The screen and display on your DS games is also much brighter and can be easily adjusted to meet the best of your gaming needs. The mic is also repositioned for a better use of gaming for games like the recent hit Brain Age, or for the Pictochat enhancement already in the DS. As for the controls, they are easier to use than before, so it won't be a discomfort, and the stylus is also restyled for comfort and easier control on you and your games.

Arguably, I purchased the original Nintendo DS a few months back, and I still am enjoying it a lot. But, I definitely love the new Nintendo DS Lite. It is a great reintroduction to handheld gamers of all ages, and for those who want a video game for its convience and fun. I absolutely recommend this a whole lot.

  My New Nintendo DS Lite
Review created: 11/08/08
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I just recently bought my DS Lite as a Christmas present for my son. I must say it lives up to its name. Alot lighter and also very aesthetically pleasing. I do like the versatility of the unit.IE: media player, game playing and the wide variety of games available. Of course there's tons of stuff for kids but I do like the idea that there's some trivia and mentally challenging/ strategy games available for older folks who wouldn't mind giving it a go.

I will say, as with any portable gaming unit, I know there is going to be the added expense of buying a kit (protective case, other add ons etc.).I have noticed after some use of the stylus, that the screen can appear scratched so I would recommend investing in a screen cover to minimize/eliminate this. The hard case wouldn't be a bad idea either, especially if like me you have a little one with a tendency to drop stuff.

Overall I think that this console is a good buy.You and/or your children will get a lot of use out of it. It's a very discreet gaming system that packs alot of punch. Just be prepared to, again invest in any additional necessities.

  The Nintendo DS
Review created: 07/01/08

The nintendo ds all around is amazingly fun for your child. It has soo many games you can play for it. Such as Brain Age 2, a useful helpful game for the nintendo ds that children can play to learn more. Or just all the mario games which are extremely fun. The nintendo ds has a good hardware system that in most of the times 95% it wont fail on you. Its a all around very fun product and definetly better than a PSP.

I purchased the DS for the Brain Age line of games. But after playing Mario Kart and Zelda, im hooked on the DS in general. Its an ingenious design with a ton of support from nintendo. The battery last for days of playing (average 3 hours a day). Its backwards compatible with the Gameboy Advance, which is a nice bonus. I recomend getting protective covers for the touchscreen. Enjoy!

  The Perfect Handheld System
Review created: 11/25/07

This DS has everything.

I'm the biggest fan of the touch screen. And it is more durable than I'd expected. My little nephew loves to play with and if he hasn't broken it, it must be tough (he's two).

I love the two screens. I thought it would be confusing because I wouldn't know where to look, but it turns out that it isn't confusing at all, and I prefer it to the one screened Game Boy SP. The screens are bright and easy to see in the dark.

I love the selection of games too. There are games for all ages. And THE NEW SUPER MARIO BROTHERS is terriffic. They spruced up the original Mario for those of us who prefer the moving left to right action.

This is the perfect system

A great improvement on the original!
Review created: 07/22/07
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Strengths: About 3/4 the size and 2/3 the weight of the original. Larger, more comfortable stylus. 4 different levels of screen brightness. Richer and more defined graphics. 3 times the battery life.

Weaknesses: Gameboy Advance games protrude from slot. D-pad harder to control. Poor design of volume slider; not always loud enough. Feels very fragile.

Summary: Much of the public had negative first impressions with the original Nintendo DS. The DS Lite changes that completely. Not only is it more comfortable to hold but it plays better too (with the possible exception of the new D-pad style). The graphics have been saturated and sharpened enough to make you say "Wow!" The stylus no longer gives you cramps and is easier to hold. However, it does have a few design flaws. First off, it feels very fragile, while the first DS is built like a tank. There is also a higher stuck pixel rate (pixels that always show one specific color) though it rarely exceeds one per system. Most platforms, however, do not have this. The last problem is, while there is only about 1 in 5000 affected, some people complain of a broken left hinge. Nintendo will fix this free of charge though. While this might not be for you if you don't want to take the risk, if you do, you'll never be able to go back to the original.

  The item was not working
Review created: 11/13/08

3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I let the seller know that the item was not working but I did not get a response. I bought this for one of my grandson. He was so excited when I gave him the kit but got very frustrated when he tried to play the games and couldn't get it to work properly. I thought maybe it was just the game so I tried another and another and even the other games from his cousins and it did not work.

There has got to be a better way to keep this vendors from selling non-working products unless other wise posted on the description. This product was described as "excellent working condition".

I have bought plenty of items from ebay and have paid everything as fast as I can but this experience will now make me think twice about going to ebay to buy used items.

  Nintendo DS Lite - Onyx
Review created: 08/28/07
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've had my DS Lite for about a month now, and I've been pretty happy with it overall. The battery seems to live forever, no matter how much I play. I have the Browser card and WiFi USB adapter, and the online webpages open fairly quickly and are crystal clear. I can go anywhere in the house and not lose signal. The only complaint is that you CAN view photos, but not video. After spending so much on accessories to get it online, I don't think I'd be willing to buy yet another accesory just to view videos on it.

So, for gaming, it's great...you can play DS games, or spend a little less and buy Gameboy Advance games and play those on the Lite. The battery lasts longer than any other gaming system I've ever used. The screens are bright and the stereo speakers are crystal.

Overall, I'd say the DS Lite is a great value. For those who say it breaks too easily, they must be careless in their use of it, because mine is holding up just fine.

My advice...if you are buying for a child, buy the original DS system. That one is a bit thicker and can hold up to more abuse.
