Sure it's heavy and long. But, Nikon hit a homerun with this lens. I researched for a long time before I decided on this lens. Buying it before I even saw it was not a mistake. It's a horse of a lens that will get any and all jobs done and the photos are outstanding. I knew that when I went pro I would need to equipment to back it up and this was my first lens to go with my new D2H. I have had this lens for almost 2 yrs and have never regreted the price I had to pay. Sure there are more cheaper lens but for quality photos that my customers have come to expect I needed a quality lens. I will have this same lens 20, even 30 yrs from now and I can count on it still giving me the same outstanding results it does to this day. It's very quick to focus and when photographing drag cars leaving the line that is a definite requirement. My photos look as though you could step right thru the picture and there you are! Customers are astounded by the clarity of every picture. So, if you are trying to decide which lens to purchase, stop and give this one a good long hard look. I guarantee you will never be disappointed.

One of the best Nikon zooms available today!

If you're looking at this review, you probably have a good idea of what kind of lens the Nikon 70-200mm VR is. You're probably just making sure that you're not plunking down close to $1500 and end up being disappointed. Well, I'm here to tell you that this lens is as good as you've read, and the best Nikon zoom out there today.

Simply put, this is a very flexible lens that is sharp, gives great color rendition, and will allow you to play in low light when consumer grade lenses are packed and ready to go home. This is my favorite lens now and if what I am shooting calls for this focal range, there's no question what lens I'm using. Constant f/2.8 across the entire focal range allows you to keep shooting and will give fabulous bokeh (how the lens renders out of focus background). VR helps even more! Nikon claims a 3 stop improvememnt and my experience would say that this is indeed true (ex. if natural light would allow 1/10 sec shutter speed, VR will allow you to shoot 1/80 sec shutter speed). Note that VR won't help you with subject motion.

So what are the downsides? If you're used to consumer grade lenses, be warned that this is lens is bigger and heavier than what you've grown accustomed to. It is about 3 pounds and about 8 inches long. Doesn't sound like much but you'll feel the difference. (On a sidenote: buy an Op/Tech neoprene strap and your camera/lens will feel much lighter!)

The original package includes a carrying bag with strap, styofoam inserts to keep the lens from moving around during transit, front and rear caps, petal shaped hood, tripod foot. The filter size for this lens is 77mm. Enjoy!
