A great second lense for your Digital SLR
Review created: 09/08/06

The Nikon 55-200mm lense is a great medium range zoom lense that is pretty much the same size at the basic 18-55mm lense. The ED glass is top notch and provides a clear and vibrant image to the digital SLR sensor. Attached to my Nikon D50 it actually provides roughly the same zoom characteristics of a much more expensive 300mm lense on my old N60 film camera.

The auto focus response is fast and accurate. One of my favorite subjects is my two year old daughter. She's a bit of a camera queen. If she sees me aiming she'll go right into show off mode. The 200mm zoom allows me to stay back a bit more and catch some wonderful candid moments we'll treasure forever. Shooting closer subjects allows me to use the lense to "crop" to the image I want instead of using a software package later. This prevents any unwanted loss of detail inherent in nearly all digital software zoom and enlarge processes (even top notch ones like Apple's Aperture and Adobe's Photoshop CS2).

Portrait shots are especially improved as the extra distance you can get from the subject provides more dramatic results with aperture settings that soften the backgrounds making the subject stand out more impressively.

At a full 200mm zoom I would certainly recommend a mono- or tripod to help give you a steady shot. You can increase the relative ISO value of most digital SLRs to help compensate on hand held shots but increasing the value also can noticeably increase the noise in the final image.

Overall the Nikon 55-200mm ED AF-S DX lense is an excellent choice for shutterbugs and professionals alike who want a reliable high quality medium range zoom lense in their digital SLR equipment bag.

The 55-200MM Nikon zoom is about the same size as my 18-55MM which makes carrying both lenses easy.It delivers sharp pictures as expected. The only lens I would opt for would be the 18-200MM Nikon V which would take the place of both lenses but the price( approx.$1000 ) is a bit too pricy. Until then I'll just switch lenses as needed.

Buying this lens after reading it was refurbished had me thinking twice about purchasing it. But after recieving these lens I thought I had bought a brand new item! It came with the refurbish gaurantee from Nikon so that eased my worries alot. After a few shots and testing the lens out I am glad to say that these lens are amazing esp with the VR! Brand new these lens will go for about 250 and I got them shipped for around 175... I highly recommend these lens and the seller thanks!!!

A really great lens. It's very clear and smooth. Some people may be turned off that it only goes as low as 55mm, but for most occasions it works just fine.

This is a great addition to my D40! I have only had it for about 1 week but I am amazed at the quality of pics I am getting. I would definately recommend the VR option as it is tough to get clear shot without it. You can turn this option on/off. Great product! Great pictures! Nikon comes through again!

fantastic lens for everyday use, non portrait
Review created: 04/07/08

I bought this lens because my Nikon D40 came with a 18-55mm lens and I wanted something more. I am just getting into photgraphy, and I'd like to think I have a knack at not just portraits, but landscapes and nature/animals, too.
If you do people/portraits, this lens isn't going to be much help because you do have to be a nice distance away to take the photo if you're just having someone pose or want to take 'normal' pictures of whatever activities you are doing.
This nikkor lens does apprx four times the zoom length as the one that came with my camera and has allowed me to take some really great photos of animals in nature or places. I took this lens into a cave and took some great shots of places I couldn't get into for safety reasons. It still works with the auto-focus and isn't heavy. Other than allowing to zoom farther and is a tad bit longer, it works and acts just like the lens that came with the D40.
The only thing I can even think about not liking about this product, is I am still looking for an economic lens that has an ever higher mm zoom. (around 700mm) To get some real nice photos of birds in flight, I'm going to need a real powerful lens.
This is a great lens to still use without a tripod (for auto shots). If you are not quite happy with your stock lens on your Nikon and wish for a tad bit more power, this is definitely the lens for you.

The product works great and the seller was prompt and honest. With the lens set to max of 200mm, pictures are super clear.

This lens is not the 'vibration reduction lens' but I still like it.

This seller did everything right. Didn't over charge for shipping and I had my lens in 2 days! When it came in I thought he had made a mistake and sent me a new lens, not a used one like I won. Couldn't be happier. Thanks for your service.

ATTN: D200 and D2 Series Owners
Review created: 03/10/08

If you closely read the instructions of this (or any) VR lens you will see "With AF cameras featuring an AF start (AF On)button, such as D2 Series and D200 models, vibration reduction will not operate even if the AF On button is depressed." Actually, the VR feature of the lens will work if you go to the menu and disable the AF Lock feature of the button, and then use the shutter release to auto focus the lens. You will NOT be able to use the VR feature otherwise. The lens is amazing! Extremely quiet, smooth, and the perfect range. I just leave this lens on my D200 and keep the other AF lens in my bag for backup. It is quiet enough to comfortably use on wildlife without giving away your position. An excellent lens at a very reasonable price. Buy this and quit changing your lens for different shots.

  A Very Nice Lens!

This lens came to me as a factory refurbished item. It came with a limited warranty, did not have the original box but was expertly packaged and shipped quickly. This is a beautiful lens and it has the best of Nikon's technology for vibration reduction. The fact that it was a factory refurb meant that I could get a beautiful lens at a reduced price. It is a joy to own and use.
Anyone interested in this lens would not go wrong with a deal like this.

Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6 ED AF-S DX lens
Review created: 02/18/08

This lens is slightly longer physically than the standard 18-55mm Nikkor lens for the Nikon digital cameras, but it is just as easy to use on a digital (I use the Nikon D50) camera than the standard lens. The focusing is truly quiet, thanks to the Silent Wave Motor in the lens barrel. All the functions, such as aperture setting, focus, shutter speed, ISO, etc. are flawlessly performed with this lens on a Nikon digital camera as you would expect. A fine lens for extending the focal length of your digital camera out to the digital equivalent of 200mm. With this lens and the normal 18-55mm standard lens on a Nikon digital camera, you have as fine of a digital outfit (clear out to 200mm) as you can get.

I bought this lens because I'm converting from Nikon film (which I have used since the early 70's) to Nikon digital (Nikon D50) and I wanted a lens that would replace my Nikon 70-210mm lens in my camera kit. This lens has replaced my cherished 70-210mm in fine style and I enjoy it every bit as much as my trusted, old 70-210mm lens I used on my Nikon N90s film camera.

It's just O.K. In the VR mode I thought the lens was a little slow. But will do. I have a Nikon 80-200, f2.8, which is heavy but I like it better. I shot a tennis match during the day, A-priority @ f5.6 (iso 1600), in the full zoom mode and still got too much unwanted blur. The VR mode was slow in trying to lock on. While hand held my still images with no tripod was satisfactory. Did not like the plastic back plate...The price was O.K.

I bought this lens for my sister inlaw for a christmas gift. I asked her how she liked it after her trip to Ireland she said that it was like night and day from the lens that came with the nikon D40, that was also a gift from me. She said that the lens was very user freindly and that the auto focus was super easy. It is the best buy for the money for this type of lens. It comes highly recomended for the photographer that wants to take quality photos without knowing a lot about photography.

One of the best lenses for its price. The pictures are sharp. The Autofocus is quickest. The Zoom range is more than sufficient. This with the 18-55 will cover the zoom range for all practical purposes.

  Too much glass but...

It has great functions and capability for its price but if you are trying to get use to some good lens and try to take pictures a little advance too much glass will be problem with this lens. You will have light problmes but still going to be alright with the correct light. Zooms in a lot but has no VR (vibration reduction) also. Stabilization would be a problem also when you zoom in.
Whatch for the ghost effect.
