  EXCELLENT LENS!!

I buy this lens to use with my D100, I have 20 2.8, 28 1.4, 24-50, 50 1.4, 70-180 micro (All Nikon) to used before but it's unconvenient to change a lens when you need other focal length and when you change a lens a dust may come in to your camera's CCD.

AF-S is really fast and you can shift a manual focus all time. Lens is sharp, at 18 or 20 of this lens have more distortion than 20 2.8 but it's sharpest than 20 and it's less of chromatic abberation. compare with 50 1.4 sometime it's sharpest than my 50 1.4 (AF-D), but fast lens is easy to use in low light situation. this lens can beat my 24-50 but cannot beat my 28 1.4 in picture quality that it have 5 times or more in pricing.

All of cosmetic is great I love Nikon design. It's not like a cheap 18-55DX or EF-S 18-55, it's build solid.

Closet focus is enough to talk some close-up shot, but with 70 mm you may get too close. Compare with my 70-180 micro, 18-70 get a lower magnification than 70-180 micro in a same close-up shot.

Buy it!! if you need real all-around lens but not have more budget to get 18-200VR. SHARP, FAST, CHEAP, CONVENIENT as your want. I recommend!!

This lens is ultra sharp at all lengths. I am a professional portrait photographer and this is a terrific all-around lens. I used to have to buy three lenses to give me what this one lens does now. With the cost at about $250 on Ebay, This lens simply cannot be beat.

Fantastic zoom lens. Focus is crisp and auto feature is silent. Once focused, it remains throughout the entire zoom. No color abberations or flare noticed. An excellent addition to any Nikon kit.

I purchased this lens in full knowledge that it was used and even had 2 very small knicks on the face of the lens. I needed a medium zoom with a little more reach than the kit lens for 2 upcoming weddings. I have always known Nikons reputation for their ED glass optics. The lens was perfect for the job and the resulting images were spot on spectacular! I shot both weddings with the Nikon D40 and this lens. Both partys were amazed at the detail and color of the images. For those of you that think more megapixels is the ticket, the 6 megapixel D40 is vertually noisless, and in shooting a wedding your not exactly still, and this is a non VR lens. Almost every image was sharp with excellant detail, except for a few images at the end when the flash started punking out. A change of batterys and were back in action. In my opinion, the only time I would want more megapixels would be in a larger sensor, like Nikon or Canons high end digital cameras with sensors the same size as a 35mm negative. Its only my opinion, but that big of a sensor with 12 to 14 megapixels seems just right, and still come out virtually noiseless. Plus save some hard drive space.
If you want an excellant lens that gives you both wide angle for groups and just enough reach as not to be center stage at a wedding, this is an excellant lens and a little faster because of the 67mm front lens at f3.5 wide to f4.5 tele. The only reason I didn't get the 18-135 mm DX lens was money. I got this lens for $112, and at the time the 18-135 was well over $200. I might still get it one day, lol. This lens stays on my D40 for most uses. I would love to have the 18-200mm VR, but again its money. I've since purchased the 55-200mm DX VR and the images from it are stunning as well, and a Quantum 2X converter is on the way. I hope this helps anyone concerning the Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Lens!

Regards,

Jesse G.

This product works well. I have only got to use it a couple of times, but I have no complaints. There was no lens cap for the lens, but one was not offered in the discription. However, there was a UV filter that came as a bonus. Overall I am very satisfied witht he product.

Versitile lens for beginer to pro.

Being both a Military and freelance photographer, I would say the Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm has consistently been not only a reliable staple, but also a versatile tool. Broad enough range for group/ceremony/mid-range distance and candid shots, this lens is fast enough and capable enough to be the primary lens for anyone involved with photography on any level.

  Great Lens for the Money
Review created: 04/04/08
by:

Maybe not a pro level lens, but certainly worth the money. I bought it for the extra range from my kit 18-55mm and I got better quality and range for the money. Perfect for chasing the kids around to take their picture.

If I was making money off of the equipment then I would consider the better glass (f2.8, etc) but I have shot a family wedding, many birthday parties and no complaints on the photos.

There are enough reviews with the technical reasons why it's a good lens. To me it's a great price, great range, and has a metal mount.

An excellent all around lens for your Nikon DSLR
Review created: 03/08/08

This lens is perhaps one of my favorite general purpose lenses for the simple reason that it's light weight and offers a smooth response at all focal lengths. I've heard others who comment that they don't care for the cam action of the lens and while it is a bit odd, I don't find it to be a problem. The lens is no longer and not much heavier than the smaller Nikon 18-55mm lens yet offers an additional 15mm zoom capability. Additionally the manual focus ring has more of a solid feel than the larger and more expensive 18-135mm lens. I also really like the all steel mount as opposed to the plastic mounts found on many of the newer Nikon lenses. Overall I rate it a great general purpose lens and I would buy it again if and when needed.

  Perfect
Review created: 02/01/08

Perfect small lens for digital work when you don't want to scare anyone way with a bazooka.

Sure there are longer telephoto lenses, but this little guy won't call attention to yourself, nor will it poke in the eye the person whom you are shooting a portrait with a long lens barrel.

Good lens to anyone who want a first lens to his camera. I brought with my D200. In the cons, probably is less usefull that a 17-105 (other good one to start) but cheaper;-) and you'll only need to approach more your subject :-)
Usualy in not need to have a VR lens with this focal distance, another point to have in the pro table.
Is light weight, fast, quiet, sharp. A good complement to any digital camera.

The range of this lens is just right for a "normal lens". The size and weight are just right. The image quality from this lens rivals more expensive lenses. I highly recommend this lens.

Nikon Nikkor 18-70/3.5-4.5 is OK but not for first lens

Excellent lens for the digital Nikon when traveling light. However, I recommend the AF 28/2.8 or AF 35/2.0 prime as your normal if you can only afford one lens to start. The prices are almost the same. This 18-70mm is the fifth in my kit and takes the place of the AF 35-70/2.8 which was the one most often on my N8008 film body.

This lens is light, fast to use and fairly sharp. Quite versatile, but it does not match the the AF 35-70/2.8 in sharpness, contrast or color on the same camera.

The petal lens hood is a pain. It takes excessive force to fasten and unfasten on the lens. I use the Cokin P hood instead.

I would rate this lens Good Plus.

I like this lens for its small size and the relatively good images it produces. While I have other lenses, this one is good for around the house, shooting the daily chaos of our family. Its range is okay for this, but I would not really call it a great "walking-around" lens. For that, the widely discussed 18-200mm VR DX lens is better. And for projects that require very sharp images, I would choose one of the pro-quality Nikon lenses and not the 18-70mm. Nevertheless, it's a good lens to have on the shelf.

I recently got a great buy of a Nikon D100 on eBay. I wanted a genuine Nikon Digital lens for it. This lens is super sharp, focuses very rapidly and was a good price on eBay. I am very pleased with these two eBay purchases.

This is one of the selected "kit" lenses that is available for Nikon's D70, D80, and D200. It works well with all Nikon DSLRs as well as some top end Fuji DSLRs. The 18-70mm range (27-105mm equiv) is the "sweet spot" of most photographers giving a wide angle view for inside shots as well as enough telephoto for most. Nikkor lenses are known for their quality and sharpness all the way out to the edges and the 18-70mm is no exception. Focusing is spot on and and very fast with Nikon's silent wave motor. If you are purchasing a DSLR body only, this is an excellent choice between the shorter range 18-55mm and the slower and not-as-perfect 18-135mm. For those who like more range without breaking the bank, mate this lens with the Nikkor 55-200mm VR and you will have a good all around lens set for less than half the cost of Nikon's 18-200mm VR and will work on all Nikon's DSLRs.

This is a very versatile and nice lens. I used it on my D70s and on my D80. The focal range is perfect. Speed not so bad. Focusing speed is excellent. If you use Capture NX many of the lense's flaws (e.g., CA, vignetting, distortion, etc.) will be near-perfectly neutralized.

I must say, this lens rocks. It's very contrasty and color redention is great. And very sharp, too. Many zoom lenses don't perform well at their longest focal length, especially at the widest aperture. But even at 70mm and f/4.5, it can still hang with the big boys. There's a little bit of light falloff in the corners at 18mm wide open. However, that's no show stopper because it's not bad and rarely will you need a wide open aperture at that focal length. There's some barrel distortion at 18mm, but will not be noticable in most shots. In the real world we don't take pictures of pieces of paper with grid lines, do we? The f/3.5-4.5 is a little faster than your typical f/4-5.6 zooms. So you get slightly faster shutter speeds and better autofocus performance in low light. And the autofocus is fast and accurate, especially for a lens in this price range. The focus ring has a nice smooth damped feeling when focusing manually. But the focus ring is in the back and zoom ring in the front, which takes some getting used to. Build quality is great for a lens of this price point. And there's even a rubber seal on the lens mount-I've never had a lens with a seal. The lens hood was hard to remove and install, but if you grab it by the sides and not top and bottom, it makes it easier. But I still found it a little tight, so I sanded the plastic stops on the hood. You may want to do this to yours. The filter thread is 67mm-filters of this size are a bit pricey, but not nearly as bad as 77 or 82mm. Overall, the 18-70 is about the best bang for the buck that Nikon offers.
