I bought it mainly for travel convenience to use with my D50 as it is light and has a good zoom range and selected it despite the mixed reviews and the fact that it is one of the cheap plastic lenses probably manufactured for nikon by one of the lower cost lens manufacturers. We took about 300 photos over Xmas in the Alps in Germany. It's performance was adequate and probably in line with the price paid. It is not the sharpest lens and the edge light fall off is noticeable at wide apertures. I shall keep it.
works great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had bought a SLR camera kit with a 18-55mm and a 50-200mm lens. They were great lens, but such a hassle to switch back and forth. I would've loved to buy the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens, but I just couldn't see paying +$600 for it. This is it's little brother which costs less than half of its bigger brother. I love the lens. I would've loved to have the VR (vibration reduction) feature, but some practice and a steady hand (or a tripod) and you get great sharp pictures.
This little guy is lightweight, has a wide range from 18-135, which is all you'll ever need. Pictures come out super sharp and with little distortion. It's also a great bargain in the Nikkor lineup. One lens to do it all.
I have only used this lens for about a week but it sure takes nice pictures. The image quality is really sharp and auto focus is fast. I would have loved to have had the 18-200mm with VR which is about 11x, but it is $650-$750. This lens is about 7.5x and I bought it used for less than 1/3 the price of the 18-200. The image quality is actually rated a little better on the 18-135 at www.slrgear.com. As a working father with a family to provide for, I can't afford to buy everything that I want to take pictures with and this lens is a more affordable, very good compromise, wide zoom range lens. Now, one of these days, the 70-300mm VR would make a nice addition. I use this lens on a Nikon D40 and the combination produces very nice results, even for an amateur like me.
This lens is all images. Sharp Images. Very contrast images. Fairly quick in bright light. It gets pretty slow in low light. Not built for low lighting, but with tripod and still images, it can be very good lens. I took it on skiing trip this weekend, 70% of the shot was focused and expose correctly. Many of them were moving subjects. Many of them which were not focused or not expose correctly were under the shade or from light to dark photos. Still lens is very useful if you get use to it and get the timing correct. To me its a keeper. For the price, it is excellent choice for beginner and serious amateurs. Not a pro caliber. Plastic mount worried me little at beginning but it stayed on my camera all day so it's all good.
#1 zoom range. From 18-135mm it covers everything you want.
#2 resolution.... This lens out performs lenses that cost 5X as much when it comes to resolution. I was stunned to see just how good this lens is for the cost. Don't take my word for it...check out photozone's test: http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Nikkor%20/%20Nikon%20Lens%20Tests/241-nikkor-af-s-18-135mm-f35-56-g-if-ed-dx-review--test-report?start=1
Pro glass rarely tests this high when it comes to resolution.
The build quality is decent, but for $350 you can't expect a pro glass.
It's a great walk around lens I'd recommend to any amature who wants to take great pictures but doesn't want to spend $1000 on a lens.
