Nikon D90 - Great Price for the Pro like Features
    Review created: 10/26/08(updated 11/17/09)

First of all I have to say is WOW! Nikon has done it again in my opinion. The camera is as good as any on Auto and delivers superior performance when you play around with manual settings.

I have been a Nikon Geek for awhile. First was the 8008s then digital with a Nikon D50. The D50 was nice but lacked some of the nice pro features I lost with the 8008s. Well I got them all back and more.

    Pros
    - So many manual settings your head will spin. The manual is 200+ pages.
    - The camera truly will deliver 3200 ISO without noise and you can push it to 6400. (I shot the moon handheld off my deck - to give you an idea)
    - The auto feature delivers superior photos (I have a two year old and most times when shooting pictures of her; it requires auto)
    - Will accept all CPU Nikon lens. I don’t have to stop using my 80-200mm 2.8D.
    - Sensor cleaning!
    - 12+MP - Allows for better cropping then my old 6.1MP or even a 10MP. Cropping is fantastic. Gets a little soft with a large crop.
    - 720P Movies! - Yes and they are fantastic
    - Live View - do I need to say more. A bit clunky, not like a point and shoot camera.
    - I am sure there are more, I just need to more time to play with it

    Cons
    - A bit bulky - but that is because the D50 was so light
    - Not to be confused with Full Frame - but that may be 1-2 years off for Nikon to make an affordable one (around $1K)
    - No manual lens metering :(
    - The 18-105MM lens is very disappointing and very soft and very plastic. I have since stopped using it and replaced it with a Tamron 28-75MM 2.8.

Overall, this is an exciting upgrade from the D80 and delivers most of the award winning features of the D300. At its price point its fantastic. IF you are a beginner, I would still think the D40, D3000 or D5000 will suit your needs, but if you are an serious amateur this will become your new baby; especially if you are using pro glass.

      Nikon D90 w/ GP-1 GPS Geo-Tagging
    Review created: 02/03/09
115 of 118 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this camera last year and it is one AWESOME camera. I have had several SLR cameras from Pentax, Canon and Nikon. A big fan of 35mm - I finally transitioned over to a DSLR. What the heck was I waiting for? It's insanely unbelievable how easy it is to take pictures - my wife an avid beginner is loving the simplicity of taking great pictures.

Anyways, one killer option that's not possible with conventional 35mm is having the capability of accomplishing GPS stamping. The GP-1 will do latitude, longitude, altitude, & time information. I find it useful for my hobby of shooting wildlife and scenarios.

Here are the features of the NIKON D90:

12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor: Coupled with Nikon's EXPEED image processing technologies and NIKKOR optics, breathtaking image fidelity is assured.

Continuous shooting as fast as 4.5 frames-per-second: Combined with fast 0.15ms power-up and split-second 65ms shooting lag, dramatic action and decisive moments are captured easily.

World’s first D-SLR with an HD movie mode: Record cinematic-quality 24fps movie clips with sound at up to 720p HD (1280 x 720 pixels) in Motion JPEG format, enhanced by NIKKOR interchangeable lens quality and versatility.

Low noise ISO sensitivity from 200 to 3200: High signal-to-noise components and design deliver exceptional performance, even at high ISO setting.

3-inch super-density 920,000-dot color LCD monitor: High resolution, 170-degree wide-angle viewing guarantees confident image review and movie playback.

Built-in image sensor cleaning: Effective 4-frequency, ultrasonic sensor cleaning frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor's optical low pass filter.

11-point AF system with Face Priority: Consistently fast and accurate autofocus, reinforced by the Nikon Scene Recognition System, delivers razor sharpness in a wide variety of conditions.

One-button Live View: Easy to use Live View activates access to 3 contrast detection focus modes including Face Priority AF.

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II with Scene Recognition System: Nikon's renowned 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, teamed with the exclusive Scene Recognition System, evaluates images, referencing an on-board database of over 30,000 photographic scenes, for unmatched exposure accuracy.

Comprehensive exposure control: Five advanced scene modes plus Program Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual.

Auto Active D-Lighting: Selectable and Automatic, Active D-Lighting optimizes details within shadows and highlights, taming high-contrast situations in real time.

Durable, high precision shutter: Testing to over 100,000 cycles assures shutter life and accuracy.

In-Camera Image Editing: Creative freedom stems from exclusive in-camera image editing, featuring Fisheye effect, Straighten and Distortion Control as well as D-Lighting, Red-eye Reduction, Image Overlay, Monochrome and more.

GPS geo-tagging: GP-1 GPS unit (optional) provides automatic real-time geo-tagging.

I recommend that if you are interested in purchasing a DSLR then I recommend spending a little more and getting the D90. It also captures video @ 720P HD 1280 x 720/24 fps VGA 640 x 424/24 fps QVGA 320 x 216/24 fps - that looks great when transferred to Blu-Ray DVD.

All around with GPS and capturing live video @ 720P - it's a good buy!!!!
