Nikon D90 - Great Price for the Pro like Features

First of all I have to say is WOW! Nikon has done it again in my opinion. The camera is as good as any on Auto and delivers superior performance when you play around with manual settings.

I have been a Nikon Geek for awhile. First was the 8008s then digital with a Nikon D50. The D50 was nice but lacked some of the nice pro features I lost with the 8008s. Well I got them all back and more.

Pros
- So many manual settings your head will spin. The manual is 200+ pages.
- The camera truly will deliver 3200 ISO without noise and you can push it to 6400. (I shot the moon handheld off my deck - to give you an idea)
- The auto feature delivers superior photos (I have a two year old and most times when shooting pictures of her; it requires auto)
- Will accept all CPU Nikon lens. I don’t have to stop using my 80-200mm 2.8D.
- Sensor cleaning!
- 12+MP - Allows for better cropping then my old 6.1MP or even a 10MP. Cropping is fantastic. Gets a little soft with a large crop.
- 720P Movies! - Yes and they are fantastic
- Live View - do I need to say more. A bit clunky, not like a point and shoot camera.
- I am sure there are more, I just need to more time to play with it

Cons
- A bit bulky - but that is because the D50 was so light
- Not to be confused with Full Frame - but that may be 1-2 years off for Nikon to make an affordable one (around $1K)
- No manual lens metering :(
- The 18-105MM lens is very disappointing and very soft and very plastic. I have since stopped using it and replaced it with a Tamron 28-75MM 2.8.

Overall, this is an exciting upgrade from the D80 and delivers most of the award winning features of the D300. At its price point its fantastic. IF you are a beginner, I would still think the D40, D3000 or D5000 will suit your needs, but if you are an serious amateur this will become your new baby; especially if you are using pro glass.

  Nikon D90 w/ GP-1 GPS Geo-Tagging
Review created: 02/03/09
115 of 118 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this camera last year and it is one AWESOME camera. I have had several SLR cameras from Pentax, Canon and Nikon. A big fan of 35mm - I finally transitioned over to a DSLR. What the heck was I waiting for? It's insanely unbelievable how easy it is to take pictures - my wife an avid beginner is loving the simplicity of taking great pictures.

Anyways, one killer option that's not possible with conventional 35mm is having the capability of accomplishing GPS stamping. The GP-1 will do latitude, longitude, altitude, & time information. I find it useful for my hobby of shooting wildlife and scenarios.

Here are the features of the NIKON D90:

12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor: Coupled with Nikon's EXPEED image processing technologies and NIKKOR optics, breathtaking image fidelity is assured.

Continuous shooting as fast as 4.5 frames-per-second: Combined with fast 0.15ms power-up and split-second 65ms shooting lag, dramatic action and decisive moments are captured easily.

World’s first D-SLR with an HD movie mode: Record cinematic-quality 24fps movie clips with sound at up to 720p HD (1280 x 720 pixels) in Motion JPEG format, enhanced by NIKKOR interchangeable lens quality and versatility.

Low noise ISO sensitivity from 200 to 3200: High signal-to-noise components and design deliver exceptional performance, even at high ISO setting.

3-inch super-density 920,000-dot color LCD monitor: High resolution, 170-degree wide-angle viewing guarantees confident image review and movie playback.

Built-in image sensor cleaning: Effective 4-frequency, ultrasonic sensor cleaning frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor's optical low pass filter.

11-point AF system with Face Priority: Consistently fast and accurate autofocus, reinforced by the Nikon Scene Recognition System, delivers razor sharpness in a wide variety of conditions.

One-button Live View: Easy to use Live View activates access to 3 contrast detection focus modes including Face Priority AF.

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II with Scene Recognition System: Nikon's renowned 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, teamed with the exclusive Scene Recognition System, evaluates images, referencing an on-board database of over 30,000 photographic scenes, for unmatched exposure accuracy.

Comprehensive exposure control: Five advanced scene modes plus Program Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual.

Auto Active D-Lighting: Selectable and Automatic, Active D-Lighting optimizes details within shadows and highlights, taming high-contrast situations in real time.

Durable, high precision shutter: Testing to over 100,000 cycles assures shutter life and accuracy.

In-Camera Image Editing: Creative freedom stems from exclusive in-camera image editing, featuring Fisheye effect, Straighten and Distortion Control as well as D-Lighting, Red-eye Reduction, Image Overlay, Monochrome and more.

GPS geo-tagging: GP-1 GPS unit (optional) provides automatic real-time geo-tagging.

I recommend that if you are interested in purchasing a DSLR then I recommend spending a little more and getting the D90. It also captures video @ 720P HD 1280 x 720/24 fps VGA 640 x 424/24 fps QVGA 320 x 216/24 fps - that looks great when transferred to Blu-Ray DVD.

All around with GPS and capturing live video @ 720P - it's a good buy!!!!

This concerns the seller, not the product. I purchased the Nikon D90 kit from this seller, Allnewshop. I received an e-mail following the transaction stating that I need to call them to "confirm the purchase". After 2 voice messages and 2 e-mails they finally responded w/an e-mail claiming they would call shortly. About a half-hour later he called and stated he wanted to be sure my address was correct. He next asked why I didn't purchase insurance(shipping, I assume). I, a bit thrown by the question, asked him how he would be shipping and he stated USPS. I asked why he thought I'd need insurance and he stated something like, "You're making me nervous...I don't know if I wanna do this...".
Prior to this transaction I had done a bit of research on Brooklyn, NY-based camera shops(nothing against Brooklyn) and discovered it is an address/location used by many fraudulent camera sellers. They often use a bait-and-switch method similar to this.
Instead of continuing the deal he asked if I wanted him to cancel the transaction. He told me that these cameras would be going on sale in a couple of weeks, as though he was no longer interested in my money. He said he'd do so only if I left him positive feedback. I told him that's not the way EBay works, I told him he needed to complete the transaction either by sending exactly what I ordered/paid for or, refunding my money, THEN I'd leave feedback. He got angered and stated, "THAT's NOT THE WAY EBAY WORKS!" At this point I just wanted out of this deal w/all my money. I logged into my Paypal and EBay accounts and told him I would not leave his feedback until I saw the money credited back to my Paypal acct.

The accessaries are low quality. They post that camera made in USA. I was mislead about that. After I understand that most of Nikon are made in Thailand. That was find. But I just prefered made in Japan. When you like to return camera, THEY REQUIRED YOU TO POST ONLY POSSITIVE REVIEW ONLY. They will not give you money back if you dont do anything. That's why they have a very good review because people need to do it. I was threaten that they have my credit card number and they won't give money back if I won't do it.

The camera takes awesome pictures, the downside is that you must read the instructions to learn how to shoot pics. But overall I would rate the camera a 10 for the picture quality and about a7 for user friendly but I would suggest to anyone who will take the time to read. Its a wonderful camera and I am not a professional photograher

Great Camera -- BEWARE OF LOUSY LENS KITS
Review created: 10/30/09
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Ok, this is a great camera. Let me point out a few things to watch out for.

*****LOUSY LENS KITS**** The Nikon D90 is a fantastic camera, but lots of sellers will try to getcha by bundling a $825 camera body with one or more really mediocre lens. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a camera, don't get seduced by these horrible lens kits.

First, decide if you are planning on using a camera bag everywhere you go or not. This is important. Unless you are planning on taking a camera bag with you everywhere, you do NOT want 4 lenses -- 3 of the 4 will just stay home 95 percent of the time. What you will need in this case is ONE REALLY GREAT LENS.

The most common lenses offered with this camera is an 18-55mm lens either alone or bundled with a 70-300mm lens. Now the 18-55mm a really nice wide angle lens down at 18mm. However, you really get very poor (55mm) telephoto capacity with that lens. If you're looking for a great all purpose lens, 18-55mm is not it.

Next, you'll see the 70-300mm lens. That's a great telephoto zoom and gives you lots of pretty nice range. But keep in mind that 70mm is NOT wide angle. That means you'll struggle to shoot close-ups of anything. No wide-angle shots of buildings, landscapes, mountains, or even large groups of people at the dinner table. A great second lens, but not a great single all-purpose lens.

Any lens kit that mixes up 2 or 3 of the above lenses are still leaving you short of ONE GREAT all-purpose lens.

The best value in an all-purpose lens is the very rarely offered Nikon 18-135mm zoom. 18mm is plenty wide-angle enough for anyone. And 135mm gives you enough zoom lens to shoot the kids soccer game close-up from across the entire field. With 12MP, you can still crop down for a nice close-up and get great high-quality prints. With this lens, you won't need a camera bag for 90% of you who are buying this camera for non-professional work. To get that lens, you'll have to buy the camera body and lens separately. You can also find good value in the 18-105mm VR (vibration reduction) lens, but really, vibration reduction is not necessary for most applications (kids/pets/sunsets), but the 18-135mm is a better value if you can find one. Also look for Nikon's 24-120mm VR lens as a better alternative.

For the big spenders, a better choice is Nikon's $850 18-200mm lens. You'll get the single best all-purpose lens Nikon makes/ You'll pay as much for that lens than the camera body itself.

***BE AWARE*** Many sellers package non-Nikon lenses with this camera. Do yourself a favor and buy a great genuine Nikon Lens.

Next, a lot of sellers advertise 4 - 7+ lenses, but really give you two lenses and then two "over" lenses that give you extra wide-angle or telephoto capacity. These over-lenses are uniformly lousy.

Also, the "bonus" items in these kits, like the tripods and camera cases are cheap, cheap, cheap. Better to buy these components separately. Same goes with the tripod, filters, memory card, etc. Some of the "accessories" like that many sellers advertise (like straps) are included with the camera anyhow. You don't need "lens cleaning cloths" etc. 99 percent of people won't carry around all that stuff anyhow. 99 percent of people don't need a camera bag even, just a nice strap. If there is one accessory to carry around in your pocket, it is a circular polarizing filter. Use on a sunny day to get your blue sky to really pop.

***PLEASE VOTE for my review if you found it helpfu

  Nikon D90 12.3 megapixel
Review created: 02/03/09
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I wanted a faster camera than the one one I was using. I am Starting my own photography buisness, and after 4 months of reseach I decided on the Nikon D90. Another photographer told me that she got her camera off E-Bay and saved a few hundred. I was very skeptical to buy from E-Bay. I had never bought anything from E-Bay. I mean, you never know who you are dealing with, you know? Well I searched several retail stores and saw that I can get a Nikon D90 (body only) for around $900.00 lenses are seperate. Or I could buy the camera with a standard lens for $1100.00. I decided to type in Nikon D90 in the E-bay search to see what came up and to my suprise i ended up finding an INCREDIBLE mouth open to the floor DEAL. I bought a Nikon D90 with 5 lenses, a tripod, a camera bag, a extra flash, Lens cleaning kit, 3 lens filters,a 16MB SD card, and a USB card reader with a rapid battery charger for only $1244.00 From Pixes Camera store on E-Bay. I have to tell you it only took about 4 or 5 days and I had it in my hands. I was sooo nervous waiting for it, You know I didn't know what to expect. I have to tell you... It was the smartest thing I Have ever done! What a deal! I added everything up seperate and I would have clearly spent Double for everything I got. I wasn't impressed with the quality of the tripod, but who cares! I bought a professional one (on E-bay) (I think i am addicted now) a few days later for around $75.00(another great deal!)I am telling you the quality of the photos are amazing! I developed some at wal-mart and the guy at the counter was flipping through them and asked me if I had the originals. I asked why and he told me I would have to have a release form from the photographer because they are professionals pictures. I laughed and told him that I was the photographer, I had to show him my credit card with my buisness name on it to prove it to him. What a compliment. So If you are thinking of purchasing this camera... do it, but make sure you get it in a package including the lenses because you can pay $400 and up on some of the lenses that come in this kit. That price is for just ONE lens. Have fun looking but remeber to only buy from people with a high feedback %. That way you know you will get what you pay for. Have a great time with your new camera!!

  D90. Amazing
Review created: 12/19/08

I got my D90 in last night at after charging up the battery and ensuring everything worked I played around in the house for maybe an hour with it. I was absolutely stunned by the ease and quality of using the camera. I am by all means an amateur with only basic training in photography in high school but the setup of the camera is possible for anyone to quickly learn. I attached the 50mm lens and went outside in the middle of the night and took stunning pictures of cars on the road, christmas lights, and unbelievable pictures of my girlfriend walking with me (the ability for the camera to capture the available light with easily adjusting the ISO and shutter speed was incredible!) I would highly recommend this camera to anyone upgrading to a nice DSLR or wanting to get into the artistic side of photography.

  Nikon D90 w/ 18-200 VR
Review created: 03/20/09
by:
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is better than the average kit you get from Nikon. Skip the 18-105 VR and get the nearly miraculous 18-200 VR. You might need an additional wide-angle and/or macro lens, but you won't need the "holy trinity" covering the 18-200 range. The 18-200 does so admirably. The seller remakes the kit for you, on this one - a bargain and a smart move. It will save you a lot of time and money.

The D90 is a dream to use. A former Canon user, I find the Nikon quicker and far more intuitive. The menus and buttons make more sense and it feels far better in my hands than Canon's 40D or 50D. My wife, who has only used Nikon's F5 and F100 (film), thinks the D90 a God-send. There are no shortcomings with this camera. It's not as beefy in construction as the D300, but it matches it in most other dimensions. In fact, some reviews match the D90's resolution and lack of noise closer to the D3 than to the D300.

[Many reviews miss the fact that there is a mirror delay setting in the D90 menu. Still, you must have an electronic or manual shutter control to keep the mirror up for extended periods, even on "bulb". We have both releases and have been able to mount the D90 to a 14" SCT telescope (about $30 in additions) for more than 40 minutes, utilizing its 3" super-sharp "Live View" LCD as a guide. No expensive flip-up mirror required.]

Since then, we have purchased a wide angle zoom (Tokina AT-X 11-16 2.8) and a couple of macro lenses (Nikon AF-D 60 2.8 and a Sigma EX DG 150 2.8). We do a lot of macro and portrait work in addition to "walking around" and the D90 easily handles all these great lenses. The Nikon 50mm 1.8 is also a must-have. It's sharp as a tack and less than half the price of the 1.4, which is not as sharp and which you should only buy if you shoot often in low light.

This selleer sent to me 3 accessoires of the Nikon D90 wrong. I were in holiday at Miami, FL and a friend of mine received the things. When I claim the error, he were very hungry, like us were responsable for the error of one of his EBAY shipping. I made a bad feedback. He asks insistence to change, because he will pay the hotel, the rent car and the meals that I spent there, near US150 per day. Say that I need to inform him how to pay. I sayed by PayPal. After I changed my bad feedback to a positive - giving a chance to him - he sayed that he don't will pay more any penny for the change that I made in his feedback. He is a very bad seller, lyer, don't deserve make part of the EBAY sellers. I can't believe that this kind of thing exists in EBAY. And I, I am very ingenuous person! I ask to EBAY to reformule my feedback to NEGATIVE again.

  My first DSLR

Bought the D90 to replace an old point-and-shoot compact camera. This is a great camera to transition into the world of DSLR. Plenty of pre-set modes that work very well for someone new to this type of a camera. As you progress in knowledge/skill, the camera allows you to take more and more control up to the point that everything can be completely controlled manually. I'm just an amatuer, but this camera has the look and feel of a camera that could meet the needs of a pro photographer.

Excellent autofocus feature. This camera is a lot of fun! I've already taken some of the best pictures that I've ever taken.

The video recording feature is a little awkward ... if you're primarily looking to take video, then I would recommend buying a video camera. But it is nice to have the video option for those unexpected situations where you would like to grab a little video along with your still pics.

Bought this with the 18-200 VR lens. I'm very happy with the lens. However, if you want to do macro (close-up) photography or longer telephoto photography, you will need other lenses and/or macro/telephoto filters.

  Nikon D90 Camera
Review created: 01/10/09

6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this camera after spending weeks researching this class of camera. I found the Nikon to be better rated than the Olympus and about the same as the Cannon. However, the one quality that made me choose the D90 was its ability to record movies. My previous Olympus did movies and although the quality wasn't great, it was usefull. The D90's quality of movies is much better. The D90 is very easy to use, but can be daunting to the first time user. You really need to read the book. Nikon should include videos on the CD that comes with the camera, but the how to videos are on their web site and I found them useful.

The D90 takes great pictures. The automatic settings work very well for the newbie who doesn't know or want to play around with the settings. There is so much information and so many settings on this camera that the menu system can be overwhelming. Again, read the book and go online to watch the videos.

Overall, this is a great camera and I am glad I purchased it. I will be taking it to Hawaii next month so I can't wait to put it to the test.

I was looking to upgrade for a more professional camera since my husband and I developed a passion for photography. This camera takes great looking photos with beautiful resolution. The entire feature that it offers is impressive but it will take time to learn. The rapid shooting is remarkable because you could take lots of picture one right after the other and your photos don’t always have to look like your just posing. Love this camera and been adding more accessories to it. The video quality and sound is wonderful. You just can’t go wrong with the Nikon D90 Camera.

  Great First SLR Camera
Review created: 01/12/09
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As the first SLR camera for me, it's very easy to use. I own several point & shoot digital cameras but wanted something able to change lenses for different applications. The owners manual is helpful on the different settings, easy to find what you want. I was concerned about the screen getting scratched, but the camera comes with a hard plastic screen cover.

The only thing I don't like is the battery, I prefer just to plug in to the camera, not take the battery out to charge. It has an adapter available, but it should come with the camera.

  Exceptional Product the Nikon D90
Review created: 06/15/09

4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have always been a fan of Nikon and since the digital cameras began I have had 3 different cameras all by Nikon. None of the was an SLR and having alway had analogue SLRs I decided to go for the D90. I did a search and came up with the package I wanted.

The camera arrived and I could hardly wait to set it up to start taking pictures. One of the lenses I ordered (the 18mm to 105mm) was missing so I fitted the 70mm to 300mm, also by Nikon and went into my garden. I focused on a butterfly and took a number of shots. The effect with all the background out of focus was fantastic making the butterfly - in perfect focus - really stand out.

Today I received the missing lens and also gave it a trial run. The quality of the lens, also by Nikon, has to be experienced to be believed. The sharpness of the focus and the colour contrast is excellent.

The camera is packed with features and it will take me some time to make good use of all these but taking basic pictures is easy and does not require any special knowledge. You can be up and running immediately on powering up the camera.

On of the excellent features I have just made use of the the multipe shot feature. The D90 takes multiple shots if you keep pressing the trigger (needs to be set to do this). This is particularly handy where there is a lot of action.

The battery also gives excellent service with plenty of power for a large number of pictures. On ebay many accessories can also be purchased which enhance the camera possibilities. On of these is the infrared remote control which can be quite handy.

I know that I shall make very good use of my D90 and would recommend it to anyone who intends to get more serious in taking pictures.

Very good camera. Absolutely all you'll need, unless you're seriously going to venture into the world of professional photography ! It has the speed, precision, and all the features you'll need to capture everything from family moments to semi-pro ice hockey ( in some pretty dim arenas ). Save your money for high end optics and don't waste it on a more expensive camera ( D300, D700, etc..). UNLESS , of course, you absolutely have a need for those cameras. I'm just a dope, recording the lives of my kids. I do, however, know several semi-pro photographers who gave me that advice and I'm ever so grateful. I followed it and spent my extra cash on high end Nikon glass, an SB900 flash, and a really good tripod/ball-head. Get the D90. You will NOT regret it ! I truly don't find a use very often for the video feature, but it's nice to know that it's only the flip of a switch away if I do need it. This camera will run all the lenses you'll likely purchase. It has a great array of in camera editing features. And, it has more adjustments available than you'll probably ever use. Go get one. It's a really nice camera.

After repeated attempts to order this camera with a specific lens, from Get-it- Digital and Sonic Cameras (warranty, reputation, and attitude issues), finally ordered from Cameta and am satisfied with the experience. The processing was good, and the extras satisfactory, but for the money I spent I think they could have paid the shipping, and packed the item a lttle better. The Nikon packaging was standard, but the condition of the box on arrival, and the haphazard condition of the contents, made me nervous until I opened everything. All in all, I got what I ordered without any of the bullcrap upselling, excuses, and New York attitude. Thanks.

I bought a Nikon D40 to use for intraoral photos in my office. Then I bought the D90 (refurbished) from Cameta camera on ebay. This camera is amazing. It is easy to use. Simple to change white balance or exposure compensation to get breathtaking photos. I haven't found anything I dislike about it. I put a Nikon VR 18 -200mm lens on it and it is functional from close up portraits to landscapes.

I have a D40 and D50 both of which are great cameras and take razor sharp images. The D90 with it's larger view screen, which is a pleasure by the way, takes the same great pictures and then some, but allows you do it easier and faster. Lots of great features...if you take the time to learn them. I especially love the "Set Picture Control" where you can tweak the Picture Control settings in the Shooting Menu and name them to whatever you like. This of course allows you to re-call them very quickly as the shooting situation changes for you without having to go through layers of menus. A great camera all in all. The only weak point is the video mode which has lack of controls for exposure. Hopefully Nikon can come up with a firmware update for this.

Amazing piece of technology, great handling in affordable price.
It has all the features of the big ones, with size, weight and cost of a mid-range - camera.
It has same sensor and same CPU as the great D300, with a bit inferior light sensor (matrix).
Great low light handling
Amazingly, now great video clips as well!

  Grey Market Cameras

Excellent product. Unfortunately, I bought two on Ebay, and when I tried to register them with Nikon, they say these are "Grey market" cameras, and cannot be registered. The serial numbers are invalid. I guess this means that I paid full price for some knock-off.

  Items Not As Advertised

-I am very happy with everything that came with this kit except the camera bag, the extra "long life" battery, the tripods, the cleaning kit, the wide angle & telephoto lenses. I understand that this, in any case, is a good deal, however a lot of things were not as promised.
-The camera bag was a lot smaller and definitely not the same as in the picture.
-The extra "long life" battery did not even charge, (even though I left it charging over night b/c I thought maybe I didn't leave it on the charger long enough the first time) so I had to throw it away.
-The tripods do not seem very stable. The smaller table top one is VERY small and doesn't look like it could handle the weight of my camera, I don't trust it to not fall forward when I have a lens on my camera. I would rather just set my camera on the table the "table top tripod" is supposed to be on. The normal size tripod seems unstable as well. Basically a cheap tripod and now I am using my old one that is much better quality.
-The cleaning kit does not come as advertised, it is a different kit.
-The wide angle and extra telephoto lens are not compatible with Nikons and so I can't even use those. And the wide angle lens also is not even the same as the one advertised in the picture.
I gave the seller a positive rating before I went through all the products and I regret it. If I had known so many things with the kit would either not work right or just not be what was advertised I would have gone with a different seller.
Don't purchase this kit unless you're doing it to get the camera, two Nikon lenses and the Nikon battery themselves and don't really care about the extras. If you can find a kit from a different seller, maybe they'll be more accurate.
Now don't get me wrong the products themselves were in excellent condition so if you have a canon the wide angle and telephoto lenses might suit you. The only actual product I am disproving are the tripods, they did not seem very good at all. But the other products are in great condition, just a lot of it not what was promised.
