D70 - 4 Years and Counting

I purchased the D70 kit in 2004 when my film camera (Minolta) was stolen. I must say that until I had to reenter the film world 3 months ago, I have shot with this camera body exclusively and put it under a great deal of stress and use through everyday and wildlife photography. Now, I have to split time between the D70, an N8008s and an F4. The F4 is the beast of the group, but the D70 is still my "go to" camera for just about everything I do.
What I love:
- It's SOLID. When I picked up the Rebel and the D70 at the store, one felt like a toy, the other didn't. I bought the one that didn't: the D70.
- The DX kit lens (18-70mm f/3.5-4.5) is amazing. It's the best lens I've used, really, and blows away just about every other KIT lens out there.
- The amount of control you have over your pictures is terrific: from manual to aperture or shutter priority, it performs exceptionally well. The other built-in custom settings (portrait, landscape, sports, etc.) work well enough, too, that you can just flip it over to one of those and go -- no worries.
- The options in the menu make the above control even more complete with the ability to adjust every other aspect of your "pre-processed" photograph.
- I have received one "ERR" message in 4 years, and that was 2 days ago -- 27,403 shutter releases later. A shutter release and the message was gone -- I've since fired the shutter 432 times...
- Sturdy -- It's been dropped, caked in mud, partially frozen and, still, works like a champ.
- Even "only" at 6.1MP, it's more than capable of crisp, sharp photographs with terrific color translation and I have printed 11x14" with perfect results.
What I don't love:
- The D70, as most digital cameras do, blows out highlights. Overall, it tends to underexpose, but when it overexposes a portion of the frame, it's blown out. Just have to tweak the settings in the menu.
- Not terribly good for astrophotography, as stars are, as mentioned previously, treated as noise. That said, I've gotten some FANTASTIC moon shots.
- Dust. I noted that some haven't complained about it at all. After 4 years, I've had my battles with dust and it would be nice to have the auto-de-dusters that the cameras have these days...
- Eyepiece is small. That said, the Diopter is a nice feature.
- No true vertical grip available. The third party ones are suspect at best.
- ISO range is a little limited as you start getting noise at ISO800 and ISO1600 is fairly noisy.
Overall, I wouldn't trade this camera for much of anything, unless someone wants to trade for a D3. :) It has served me well and seems like it will continue to do so for a while. This is a solid camera and if you can find one at a good price, do not hesitate. I recommend going with a high-speed, high-capacity CF card, though, as the it makes a difference, even with an "older" DSLR.
