The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. I would also recommend you to also test the D50/D80 first before deciding to buy the D40. There are some limitation with the D40 which shouldn't bother most people. Once you understand its limitation, the D40 is a potent and exciting photography machine

Just like all its (DSLR) siblings, the D40 powers on instantly and take pictures with no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. In addition to the P,S,A,M mode, the picture quality of the auto settings are also very good. With 2.5 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40 is a great all around camera

Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without this mode the flash will pop-up (on all other pre-programmed mode) even when you don't want to use flash (which can be annoying)
2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these features are useful especially for those who doesn't have Adobe Photoshop

To date, D40 is the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR. I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying

About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. A very decent kit lens.

Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S type lenses.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40 in my opinion:

Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. Affordable price
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 2.5 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens.
10. Great battery life (400-1000 on a single charge).
11. Auto (flash off) mode available
12. 1/500 flash sync

Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people
3. No top LCD and no front command dial
4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S lenses
5. No AF/MF switch
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7. 6 Megapixel (More Megapixel needed to print larger than 12 X 18 at 300 dpi)
8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings
9. No in camera image stabilization (like Sony and Pentax) but Nikon has lenses with it (VR).
10. No depth-of-field preview button

In conclusion, the D40 is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control, and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag), without having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly), the D40 is pretty much all you will need.

Happy Photographing!

Nikon D40 - a dream come true! Performance & Quality
Review created: 01/08/07

In the market for a new digital camera that will take beautiful high-quality pictures, has many important features, and is relatively easy to use? Well, the Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera may be just what you are loooking for!

The camera is fast, quiet and does the job! You can switch from automatic to manual settings, and there is a very wide range of shooting/flash/editing features available within the camera itself. The body feels strong and solid, but is not overly heavy. If you are a big person, you may want to try the camera in person first, as the grip may be a little too small for you and it might be uncomfortable.

I am very impressed with the speed of picture taking (2 1/2 frames per second) and the bright, big LCD screen (2 1/2 inches), and the battery life (they say anywhere from 500-1000 pictures on one charge - and the charger is included)

Within the camera itself, you can edit the photos as you take them...you can crop, adjust the color balance (including sepia and other features), zoom in...and more. While not essential (especially if you edit your photos on the computer, with a photoshop type program), I have found it to be handy...you can fix your shot right afrter you take it. I also liked how the camera was smart enough to save the original photo, as well as the edited picture (while not erasing the original)

I was told that other lenses will work with this camera, but as the motor is in the lens itself (not in the body of the camera) the Autofocus feature will not work when using other lenses that are not AF-S type lenses. I did not think that this was a big deal.

All in all, I find this to be a LOT of camera for the price. I am very impressed with it, and while it looked a bit intimidating to me at first (after coming from a little 1 megapixel digial camera bought in 2002), I got used to it quickly and I feel very comfortable with it. I can't wait to get out there and take some photographs!

I've been a great fan of EBAY for several years. But this camera purchase has been a turn OFF! I was the successful bidder for this iteam and it's gone down hill from there. I'm very disappointed in Ebay allowing this thief to continue. I sent him $424 and got absolutely NOTHING in return. I have filed a dispute with PayPal. I pray this guys gets what's coming to him. This guys took my money and spent it on Ebay items!!!
I am so disappointed! I wanted the camera to take pictures at my daugher's wedding. Well so much for that plan! It has come and gone and still no camera!

Great deal on a nice camera!
Review created: 08/09/08

My son really wanted this camera. We looked at a lot of sites before we found this one. The price was unbeatable, and the free shipping was awesome. You do have to call customer service to complete the transaction and they, of course, talk to you about extended warranties and other options. However, the customer service rep was very professional and courteous. We got the three year warranty deal and with that a free memory card and free overnight shipping. We got the camera the very next day as promised. My son is super excited. The camera is refurbished, but you would never know it wasn't brand new. Comes in actual Nikon box with all Nikon parts and information. We feel that we made a wise decision on this transaction. Enjoy.

  My new Nikon D40
Review created: 08/08/08

So I was looking around for a DSLR for a while. I had some money saved up. The thing was, it was hard to tell what was a good deal, Amazon listed a D40 (the model I wanted) at about $420. Ebay was right around $390 but a lot of those were just bodys, or in not-so-good condition. So I finaly made the leap with this baby, and I just love it! would buy again.

  Nikon D40x
Review created: 08/06/08
by:

I thought I was buying the D40 but when it arrived it was the D40x... main differences are the D40 has a 6.4MP sensor that shoots 2.5fps whereas the D40x has the same sensor as the D80 which is 10.2MP and shoots 3fps. So this is a review on the D40x not D40.

What I like:
Its light, small, easy to carry around.
Big and bright LCD screen.
Easy to follow and customisable menu.

Dont like:
3 points of focus, this is quite limiting. Even just 2 more centre top and bottom.
The autofocus motor has been taken out of the camera so only lenses with built in motors work with the camera. I basically have to manually focus my dads 70-200mm lens.

Overall:
Great for 1st time DSLR owner wanting to get better at photography or to take crisp and vibrant family and home shots.

Whille the camera is nice it is very misleading that you cannot use your camera without buying a lens. I of course knew lenses were an option I didn't realize that it didn't come with any kind of lens at all. I have had to purchase a lens and have my camera a week before I could even take a picture. The camera is very nice though as long as you know that in advance!

  Great SLR Camera!

This is my first SLR camera. With no previous experience, I was able to put it on auto mode and take great pictures immediately! There are many extra setting to choose from when you have a little more experience. Battery life is excellent! I took over 200 pictures one day and it hardly put a dent in the battery life and it charges quickly. Manufacturers instruction manual doesn't get into great detail. You may need to purchase a guide or cd if you have no experience.

  Nikon D-SLR Camera
Review created: 07/16/08(updated 07/16/08)

This Camera is simple to use right out of the box, but it also has some very professional settings which may take a while to get used to. The pictures are excellent with flash providing a nice bright picture in the dark on subjects nearly 30 feet away. The only thing I did not like about this camera is that it does not have a digital zoom that I have found and you can not use the LCD display to shoot a picture although it does provide instant review of the picture with slideshow capabilities. Short of these two downfalls I think it is a great camera for the price, very light in weight, loaded with features and easy to use right away. The other thing that I love about this camera is that there is virtually no shutter delay you actually capture an image the moment you press the shutter release button. No more missed baby smiles or anything else that only happens once in a blue moon.

What a Great Camera! Nikon D40
Review created: 07/07/08
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Being my first SLR, I can only compare it to other digital cameras I have owned. I love the ease of use, the fantastic and professional looking pictures. I would change the display to be a viewfinder instead of simply a readout of information. This is not a huge problem for me because I like the smaller viewfinder. Overall, I love the camera and look forward to purchasing more lenses and other equipment. You can't go wrong with this camera.

My husband and I absolutely love this camera. I purchased the Nikon D40 for his birthday. We have used it at the Big XII Baseball tournament in Oklahoma City and at the Bound 4 Beijing Softball Games in Oklahoma City. The camera took awesome picture and were clear. For the price we paid, it was well worth it and I have since referred some friends to the same company.

  D40 vs. D50

First impression of this camera is very good. A less complicated version of the D50 & D70 with the same or better picture quality. Anyone who needs a no fuss professional quality camera should look at the D40 as an option. It is less expensive, easier to operate and takes GREAT pictures in all modes.

I like the overall ease of use. The auto focus feature on the lens sllows very sharp, detailed, pictures. The camera can be adjusted for any situation, low light to high light, speed, moving shots or portraits and distance. It is lightweight an offers the same quality as the 35mm film model. I have both and love the quality of both.

  Best starter dslr!
Review created: 06/26/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best cameras i've ever used. The image quality is outstanding, and it is relatively easy to setup. For a complete beginner in photography it might be a be much to start with an slr, but on the other hand the fast "Help" button on the camera simplifies things greatly. I would definently recomend this camera for anyone that is looking at upgrading to a dslr, but does not want to pay a premium. At under 500$ this is a great deal. Don't let the 6.1 MP fool you, the image quality is amazing, even shots blown up to 3100x2300. If you are looking at blowing images up to poster size then yes this may be a bit too small(look at the d40x instead with 10.1 mP). Only drawback to this camera is that it is an slr, so you must be very careful with your equipment, the battery latch isn't quite as tight as I would have liked, and the other latches are a bit cheap. But on the other hand everything else feels sturdy. Weighing in under 4 lbs too this one is not a hefty bulky slr as most would assume. For a middle of the road, quality starter DSLR I highly recomend the Nikon D40 6.1 MP.

  Incredible Camera!
Review created: 06/22/08

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Nikon D60, the latest from Nikon in the way of Digital SLR's is a phenominal camera. It is versital and capable too. It has many automatic modes like portrait, sports, low light, etc. and 4 manual modes including Full Auto and Full Manual. It can even change the ISO betweem 100 and I believe 1800 which is incredible. It makes picture taking a easy thing, The photographer can spend more time being creative instead of babysiting the camera's functions. Conversely, it you want to get into the nitty gritty of the camera, all the usual functions can be manually overridden as well; as some that are not usually controlable too!
I totally recommend buying a Nikon D60 if you can afford it. The D40 is only 6 MegaPixel while the D60 is a full 10 MegaPixel. All of the cameras Nikon cameras are very capable and worth high praise. No matter which model you invest in, make sure it's a Nikon, you can never go wrong owning a Nikon.
