  Nikon D200 gives you capability!

It is now February 2008 and here is my update after using the D200 for two years.
Ok... I still own the camera and use it daily. My D200 and several lenses literally go almost everywhere I go. Every trip, heck every time I leave the house my case goes right in the back seat right where I can reach it.
From the beginning I have taken advantage of all the features of the Nikon D200.
I stand by my earlier review and still consider those features to be the highlights.
If you click my ebay profile you will see a link to my extensive photo gallery and multimedia sites.
It is worth mentioning that I sent my camera in for the recommended year plus checkup and received excellent service from Nikon in El Segundo, Ca.
I highly recommend the camera and Nikon as a system!.

My experience with this camera has been excellent!
Here is an updated assessment after using the camera for a year.
The exceptional value of this camera is even more apparent today than it was a year ago.
What the D200 does best is allow me to capture digital images across a multitude of situations.
This camera's exceptional value can be summarized by one word.....capability.
It is the attention to details such as ergonomics and information interface that make the Nikon D200 both comprehensive and a pleasure to use. The thoughtful design and substantial build quality integrate well with the full compliment of features and advanced imaging options.
It is the overall capability offered at a relatively modest price that makes the Nikon D200, in my opinion, an exceptional value without peer.
Nikon's inclusion of advanced technology and design translate into capability I can describe specifically.

- Advanced image processing that enables me to capture images with accurate color and transition
detail.
- On board availability of perceptive and creative affects such as Image Optimize, Overlay, Multiple
Exposure with Auto Gain, Kelvin Temperature Scale, White Balance including Custom WB via easy
adjustment.
- Customization of up to four seperate Shooting and Custom Setting Menus for quick adaption of
camera to multiple anticipated capture environments.
It is this feature that in my mind truly separates this camera from the competition. I often use this
feature to set up the camera so that I have several configurations just a click away.
- Option to deploy the on-camera flash to control the Advanced Wireless Lighting syatem as well as
Nikon's highly capable TTL auto flash mode that uses monitor preflashes to properly expose the
subject regardless of ambient light conditions.
- Ability to follow action with minimal viewfinder blackout and up to five frames per second speed.
Near instant shutter release, high buffer capacity and numerous focus sensor options including
Focus Lock and Focus Tracking.
- Access to Nikon as a system including a full range of Nikkor lenses, accessories, software and after
the purchase benefits not the least of which is outstanding ongoing customer service and technical
support.

I find the numerous features of the D200 to be both welcome and necessary.
Tremendous capability for the price!
Good luck!

Nikon D200: the best quality at a low price

The Nikon D200 is frankly one of the best digital cameras on the market. At its price level, it is unmatched in terms of features, performance, and image quality, not to mention ergonomics and build quality. When you combine one of the most advanced photographic systems on the planet with the latest in digital technology, one expects a top level result. The D200 meets and exceeds expectations day after day. I've used my fair share of top of the line digital gear from several brands, and the D200 truly is the best value. Missing only a handful of features from the top of the line, $5000 cameras, and improving on some of their features at the same time, the D200 provides professional level results in a professional level camera, but without the hefty price tag.
The 10.2 Megapixel CCD sensor provides outstanding image quality and resolution that puts every lens you mount to the test. Just like the D2X, it can bring out flaws in inferior glass that you never saw before- brutal, but that does mean you are getting the most out of your gear. I use it for any high resolution work I may need, and even heavily cropped prints are stunning. Auto White Balance in this camera is superb, and is rarely fooled by tricky lighting. The ability to set Kelvin white balance is also helpful for those situations where auto white balance is not able to do its best, like in extremely warm incandescent light.
Noise during long exposures is easily removed simply by turning on the long exposure Noise Reduction function. High ISO noise is not bad, especially considering the resolution of the camera. Nikon's rendition is like film grain, and implementing one of the three levels of noise reduction, even the lowest, almost completely removes color noise with, to my eyes, almost no perceptible loss of detail at all. Results in RAW at high ISO are best with Nikon Capture Editor.
The D200 body is very well built- its magnesium alloy chassis really shows in its heft and solid feel. the rubber grips and rubberized command dials are very nice. All the controls are in the right place, easily accessible. the large 2.5" 230,000 pixel LCD is very nice and provides you with a very clear view of your image. You can use the center button of the 4-way controller to instantly zoom in on a photo at varying levels of magnification too.
The myriad of custom functions and menu options may seem daunting, but it provides for unparalleled control over the end results. 4 shooting and 4 custom settings banks allow you to have multiple presets that you can rename at will.
The intelligent battery system in the D200 only accepts Nikon EN-EL3E batteries, but provides you with a running total of shots taken, percent remaining, and lets you know the charging life of the battery from new to replace. Coming from a Nikon D70 or D50, battery life may seem shorter, but considering it is basically the same battery powering image processing electronics from the Nikon D2X/D2HS, a much larger LCD, and more, performance is in line with what one would expect and is still good, though not as phenomenal as the D70/D50.
The body is also weather sealed and does an admirable job at keeping out the elements.
The Autofocus system is very configurable and provides great results overall. The flash system, Nikon's i-TTL, is fully supported with multiple groups controllable from the built in flash.
I've had my D200 since it came out in December 2005. It is certainly a fantastic camera and I love using it!

The price is unbeatable and the quality of the items superior. I almost paid 1/3rd more at a retail store--yikes. I love the camera and lenses and will do business with them often.

  Nikon D200
Review created: 08/19/08

I have been a film camera buff and have only used point-and-shoot digital cameras until my purchase of a D200. My film cameras are Mamiya Medium-Format 6X7's (2), and Two Nikon F5's and a Nikon F100. I have a lot of nice lenses, and just did not want to spend $ 5K for a digital to emulate the quality and performance of my F5. I deliberately waited for the launch of the D300 and D700 models, as I figured the D200 prices would drop, with the D200 being a camera capable of providing a base-level of acceptable performance for me.

I have now had the camera for the better part of two weeks, and am very pleased with the shutter response, battery life, and quality of the pictures. As with any camera, it is more the skill of the photographer than the cost or model of his equipment - and the D200 is equal to 95% of just about anything anyone would conceivably want to do with a camera. I don't believe the resolution capable of great enlargements, but know, too, that I enlarged an 35 MM ISO 400 B&W photo to 20" X 24" with spectacular results - well beyond what that film speed is purported to support in size, but without the graininess that would supposedly accompany it.

Having said that, if you're an amateur or serious hobbyist, take advantage of the price differential on D200's, and ask yourself if you really need to shell out an extra $ 800 -or - $ 900 for a D300 at this time. I'm more than happy, and I've really tortured this camera and used in in diverse applications in the couple of weeks I have had it, intending to either conclude I was satisfied with the purchase, or cut my losses early, and re-list it on EBay.

My conclusion: It's a keeper, hands-down.

  Rugged Workhorse
Review created: 08/04/08
by:

About a year ago, I upgraded from a D80 to a D200. The difference in construction is the thing that's most obvious about it. The D200 is built like a tank. I've dropped it, abused it, taken it to the beach - and it never has a problem.

My biggest issue with it is the horrendous battery life. Buying the MB-D200 grip with 2 batteries is a MUST with this camera unless you like recharging after an hour of shooting.

As for shooting performance, it's superb across the board. It's autofocus is fast, its meter is difficult to fool, and the saturation and clarity is terrific.

I shoot weddings, so for me, a rugged camera is a must. I always carry two of these at all times (and about 30 batteries - I'm not kidding). Couple this camera with a Nikon 70-200 2.8 and the vertical grip, and you can even use it as a boat anchor! I kid, of course, but it's definitely a heavy camera!

The D80 feels like a toy compared to this thing.

  Nikon D200 - Great Camera
Review created: 08/03/08
by:

I've researched for months on an upgrade for my photography profession. The D200 meets all of my needs beyond all of my other cameras for every type of shoot I do; weddings, portraits, landscapes, animals - anything you can imagine. Its durable and its size alone with the battery grip gives you all the confidence you need as a professional.

It does have a lot of features which can intimidate the average user. Once you understand the settings and how to adjust them quickly (which the D200 has user presets to switch between)... the settings can help enhance your images through various techniques average cameras cannot do.

Get the battery grip if you can't find a camera that comes with one. It allows not only storage for multiple batteries, but also has a verticle shot feature on it to prevent that ackward handturn and allows for a steady shot. Not to mention 10+ megapixels! Can't beat that - not necessary anyway... ooooo 12Megapixels... please. I jumped from D70 from 6megapixels. My work is above average already and the D200 can allow for greater images and enhancements!

Overall, great camera... no need for the D300 untill the next line comes out that will reduce the price. Shop smart!

  A Grey Market Camera
Review created: 07/02/08
by:
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

What I didn't like is not being told that this was a grey market item. Grey market means it was not made to be sold in the US and does not meet the same standards. It also means that not only will Nikon not fix it under warranty, they will not fix it at all. The manual was in Japanese and was useless as were the two programs that normally come with the camera. One is a 30 day free trial and the other one is a free photoprogram. Of course being in Japanese, they are useless. I have learned to never deal with Ebay....I have purchased a lot in the past under psychpar....and I didn't do all the research I should have on the company. Barclay's Photo is a rip off and Ebay should publish a warning about Barclay and I'm sure other companies also sell these products. I know, let the buyer beware and honestly after I completed the purchase I found a lot of negative feedback on the internet but since I completed the buy I decided to do that right thing and complete the transaction. Sadly it ends a long relationship that I have had with Ebay and Ebay sellers.

The camera will receive an aggressive workout since I am the yearbook adviser for my local high school. Not only will I be using it for action sports photos, but several of my students will use it as well. We have a Nikon stable of cameras with the D50, D70, D80 and now the D200. The D200 will give us the continuous shooting needed to record great athletic plays. I know we will truly make our yearbook photos better because of the D200.

  Very Good
Review created: 06/09/08

I waned a D200 and this was was the best that I saw. They were very helpfull when I talked with them. Called me on the phone with information about the camera. It was just a all around great deal. There are other things that ebay sellers are selling that I can't bid on because there is a strike on my account. I like to say that what one don't look into is that the sellers don't put everything on the item THEY they really don't. I bought a gatway laptop it had a bad battery, they said it was good. I did not come back to ebay and complain. I just said my lost. I bought a restoe disk frome a seller and he said it would restore my ebay bought laptop to it's original operating system. It did not, and after I asked him all the information before I bought and payed for it. I had to go out and spend another $50.00 to get it up and running. I said what was I to do? They guy knew he lied to me about the disk, so if I sent him an email about it was wrong, my lapetop was still messed up and he knew what he was selling.I just thought that I would vent. I know nothing will come out of this. I know you have been around for years. Well I'm not going to wast any more of my time writing this.

Nikon D200 10.2 Megapixel SLR Camera

I purchased this camera to take photos of coins. Coins are very dificult to photograph due to the close range and the reflection of the coins. With this camera I have had amazing results and am able to produce some of the best photos I have ever seen of coins.

It has a pop up flash that you can use as well as a hotshoe flash. I found an additional light defuser that is easly mounted to the hotshoe slot that really helps if you are taking flash photos and softens the photos.

This camera has a huge number of settings that you can choose from on the main menu.

The construction of this camera is great and is very heavy duty. It is sealed to prevent dust intrusion and the screen on the back of the camera is large and easy to view your photos after you have taken them.

You can also purchase a video to help you learn the operation of the camera which I found very useful. The user manual is very well presented and gives you all of the details of the camera and its functions.

For the price range of cameras I don't think this one can be beat!

I rate this camera 5 stars all the way.

Nikon D200 is a great camera. I switched from Canon 20D selling all my canon equipment. I think I did the right thing. I got a used 50 mm 1.4 lens and it fit nicely to my d200 taking impressive pictures. The good part buying a used camera, you can always sell it back on eBay and get all or most of your money back.

  Nice Upgrade from the D-70s
Review created: 05/10/08
by:

The D-200 was a natural choice for me. Not because I am a megapixel junkie, but rather it is a very nice extension of the D-70s I previously owned.

Besides the larger LCD screen in back, the folks at Nikon improved the viewing screen on top of the camera a well, and re-directed many of the more important menu functions. Now shooting is easier and faster, since many of the features are now just a button click away, rather than a slog through a difficult menu selection process.

If the camera has any drawbacks to me, it's the sheer weight. This is not a plastic camera like my beloved D-70s. It has a metal body and significant weatherproofing seals throughout. While it's a bit more to tote around, it is a very solid-feeling camera with great features. All-in-all, a great upgrade to my D-70s.

D200, a steal of a bargain right now!
Review created: 05/06/08

Love this camera. I shoot mostly for fun, but am very demanding of my camera. Shoots great action shots as it focus' super fast and shoots even faster at 5 fps. Surprisingly easy to use, esspesially if you're already a Nikon user. Now with the D300 out, the d200 isn't the latest and greatest. I've played with both, I think anyone short of a full blown pro would be better off saving money on a D200 and using it on more lense or flash. The picture quality is excellent, the speed is great and the magnesium frame means it'll probably outlast you. If you need better than this, you should be shooting a full frame anyways, as that's the only draw back to the D200. My wide angles aren't so wide anymore (1.5X conversion), but the zoom kicks butt.

  Great Camera!
Review created: 05/06/08
by:

The D200 is an excellent sub-professional camera. We have 2 of them and use them for wedding photography. The D200 has alot of options, and is very intuitive to use once you learn all of the settings. One of the things I like the most about the D200 is the ability it has to be used as the "commander" for external nikon flashguns. If you have an SB-600 or an SB-800, the D200 can control them wirelessly. This prevents you from having to spend a couple hundred dollars on a pocket wizard.

The pictures are sharp and have remarkably good color depth and contrast. For the money this is one of the best cameras out there.

Nikon d200, great camera, more advanced though
Review created: 04/29/08
by:

I love the camera. It's pretty easy to use right out of the box, but requires some work and reading to really take advantage of all the features. The seller provided a guide with the sale that has been invaluable in learning about the features and which ones to use.

software is ok, not as user friendly as I would like, also the transfer part doesn't work properly for me so I have to use windows explorer to transfer from the card to the pc.

Camera feels solid and seems dependable. Much more advanced than my Olympus E-500, although I liked that as a starter camera.

  D200 initial impressions
Review created: 04/20/08

Needed to change system from Konica-Minolta to something else. Saw the specs for the D200 and decided to give it a shot. Robust build, lightning quick start-up, impressive features, wonderful colors. Not sure if my focusing system is 100% accurate right now because I'm seeing some significant color fringing at the edges of high-contrast lines. There are also some dead pixels in this CCD imager, consistent from image to image. This was not something listed in the auction, though the seller used this camera to produce copyright-protected images, and certainly would have noticed them at 100% view. It's likely that this unit will have to go to Nikon for service.

Aside from that, if it can produce the sorts of images I've found online, it might be a good step up for D40/D70 users, unless they've got the money for the D300!
