My first choice lens is the Nikon AF-S VR 18-200mm as the most versatile lens for indoor/outdoor use. The Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm is my second lens. It covers most needs for outdoor use, and meets my philosophy of travelling light and simple. The VR feature is worth it. This lens just feels good. The zoom works smoothly. The manual overide in auto focus is convenient.
Recommendation: Buy this lens for medium telephoto and general outdoor use. It is very versatile in this range.
