Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF VR Lens

I decided after 15 years to upgrade my long zoom lens from an old 70-210MM non D to this spectacular lens. It incorporates some on the best features that pros have come to love. The silient wave motor is fantastic, quiet and fairly quick. The 2 ED elements help make the pictures look sharp even at long distances. The VR feature is just plain amazing. I dont have the steadiest hand but with this feature in good light I can go to about 1/30 or 1/15th if I am lucky; which in most cases eliminates the need for a tripod. For the price you get a nice piece of glass that is the equivelant of 450MM on a Nikon digital (I use a Nikon D50).

Some issues - It is very much a plastic lens and is made in Thailand. I suggest a good UV filter that is multicoated (that can be $50+, but hey you put down $450+ for the lens). I do have an old 80-200MM 2.8D ED push pull that this lens will never be mistaken for, but that lens weights about 5lbs and not easy to travel with.

All in all a great amateur lens to have fun with and enjoy!

The lens is fantastic - With the Nikon Vibration Reduction you really can hand-hold the camera at amazingly low shutter speeds and still get crystal clear pictures!

It's a fairly 'weighty' lens - which is good.

It's fairly fast as well (for it's price range)

If you have a regular 70-300 "kit" lens that came with your camera - then you'll LOVE this lens! It's MUCH faster (to focus)!

I'd say the only drawback is that it's heavy. (By itself is heavier than the cameras that I shoot - D70 and D50)

It also has a pretty long minimal focal distance.

Overall FANTASTIC lens! I LIKE IT AND RECOMMEND IT TO THOSE UPGRADING FROM THEIR "KIT" LENSES!

Great lens!!! VR is superb and is a must for such a focal length. I really wanted the 80-400, but it is so big and heavy and expensive. I thought this was a perfect fit for my needs.

The lens is every bit that it was portrayed as. I use it all the time with great results capturing the wildlife in our area.

This may well turn out to be one of those bargains of the century. At the right price, a VR 300 is invaluable. I can shoot at the 300mm zoom with only 1/200th. This is also great for soccer, snowball fights, and some indoor telephoto. I don't recommend this for portraits as the minimum distance isn't practical. Using the 1.5 conversion factor, and thinking of this lens as a 105-450, it becomes the poor man's Sports Illustrated zoom.

Excellent lens. Needed longer telephoto and planned to get 400mm but reviews spoke to AF problems so decided on this lens. going on safari later this year and plan to use it then.

It is sharp, has good contrast, and produces nice color. The autofocus is quick and accurate, Great Vibration Reduction superzoom, I am very happy with it, great value for the money.

I am new to the DSLR photography world but I admit that I love this lens. you can get in nice and close with a 300mm lens but don't expect miracles with it. The Aperature is not as low so it performs great in the daylight. I really don't think it would do good at night without a flash. Then what flash can reach 300mm. I like the Bokeh in it, which is the background blur with a narrow depth of field. It is a good telephoto lens, 70-300mm range is good but it makes me wonder what the Tamron 18-270mm VC would be like.
