I owned this lens since when it first came out in the market and have used it for about 8 months now. I'm not going to go any detailed specs here but I'm going to say a few things about the lens in real life.
Cons: It's expensive and heavy. But as you know, f/2.8 zoom lens in this class is pretty much the same with other brand. Nikon lens are fairly expensive compare to Sigma, Tamron brands fitted to Nikon camera and at the end, you get what you paid for.
This newly introduced 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S has special coating on the glass, they call it "NANO" coating and I've noticed that this lens produces less purple fringe(chromatic aberration) than my other older Nikon lens without "NANO" coating.
Even at f/2.8 wide open, it still produces sharp images and makes nice bokeh background. Focuses fast and virtually silent when focusing. I just wish they had put VR(Vibration Reduction) on this unit and it would have been perfect!
It's pretty big too, so I had to get a new bag to fit this and the lens hood nicely.
If you want exceptional quality lens in 24-70mm range for your Nikon, look no further. This is the one.

I own the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 VR lens for the Fuji S5 Pro digital SLR as a secondary and backup outfit. After using this combination for the first time on an entire wedding as a secondary shooter for another photographer, and after processing the images on my computer, I detected an inordinate amount of paralex distortion even at closer focal lengths, as well as overall mediocre image quality and difficulty auto focusing in dimly lit situations. I decided to upgrade to a faster medium range zoom Nikon and, after reading nothing but rave reviews on the B&H website, decided on the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8G ED AF-S. I'll keep the 18-200mm as a back up lens simply because it's a very convenient focal length range for certain situations.

While it is a short range,full frame telephoto lens,it works nicely on DX cameras,getting into studio portrait range. It is equally at home for low light usage. (actually what it was intended for.

This by far is the sharpest zoom I have ever owned.
This glass is amazing, and the glass is just incredible. I am currently using it on my Nikon D700 full frame DSLR, and it almost seems like these two were made for eachother.
Simple in design, not too heavy, and not too light, just right in your hands.
I have never actually looked at the front element of a lens with so much admiration. Its actually quite beautiful. Even the lens hood on it makes it LOOK pro. Super thick plastic, with a solid locking device. significantly sturdier, and hefty build than the 18-200mm VR.
Im not sure what the Nano Coating is doing, I dont know about the element placement, or anything technical, but what I do know is that the images from this lens are TACK SHARP. A bit pricey for this one, and I wish that it had no barrel movement or extension at all when focusing. If it had VR I would have given this lens a 6! Why Nikon did not put VR in its best lenses, one may never know.. in any case ..
Get it, and dont look back. For portraits, fashion, everyday ... - this lens leaves you wanting nadda.
This one actually stays on my camera and does not come off.

Professional gear....I purchased ths lens because I wanted the best possible quality from my D700. The lens is a dream, ultra sharp corner-to-corner, color correct, easy to use.

Nice all around lens
) not as heavy as the older 28-70 "beast" but still a nice size and weight for an f/2.8. I shot with a Sigma for a while and the clarity comparison is very noticable. images from this lens are clear and tack sharp! Very nice bokeh for f/2.8!
The "old school" part of me wanted to see the f-stops on the lens, but since this is being used on my D300, it really doesn't matter anyway.
I've used it to shoot weddings, night time sporting events, landscapes and it has not failed so far. You won't be disappointed with this glass!
