      Unquestionably the Best

I bought my 17-35 used through ebay. I did this because I did some very extensive research including trying out the 4 competitors for lenses to buy- the Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G DX, 17-35mm f/2.8D, 17-55mm f/2.8G DX, and 28-70mm f/2.8D.
I chose to buy the 17-35 first and the 28-70 later- here's why.
Holding the 17-35 the lens 'felt' like a pro grade lens- same with the 28-70. TO my perception, the 12-24 and 17-55 fell short here. Mounted on the camera, the 17-35 clearly had superior ergonomics to the 17-55 DX. And optically, it provides the world's best results stopped down into its 'sweet spot of f/5.6-16, with peak at 8.0-11.
So I bought the 17-35 with this in mind. What I got blew me away.
The sharpness this lens can bring is fantastic- not as sharp as the 17-55 DX at f/2.8-4.0, but past that it is equal or better than the 17-55. It is a premier landscape lens- but it can be used for anything- people, places, things. Its close focus distance is a mere 0.28m from the film plane- factor in the body and the lens, and it is just inches in front of the front element- awfully close even with the hood on.
I also chose this lens because living in a very sunny area, wide angle lenses prone to flare are simply not so useful. The 17-35 has a remarkable resistance to flare- I've gotten many shots with strong light sources in the photo on digital (remember, this is far into the image circle now), and with the sun completely inside the photo on film, with absolutely NO flare.
The lens is incredibly wide on film, and still acceptably wide on digital. I rather like its digital range, it is my 'bread and butter' lens right now.
The optical quality on the F3 with Tri-X 400 and Portra 160 is superb...and downright outstanding on the D70 and now the new D200 Digital SLRs.

Great on film, less so on Digital

This is a legendary lens from Nikon. It's my favorite lens and the one on my camera most of the time.

    + Build Quality (tank like)
    + good wide open (f2.8)
    + Fast focusing
    + Smooth manual focusing
    + AF-S is great
    + Great control placement
+ Tack sharp on film bodies
+ very little to no distortion
    + lighter than carrying around 20, 24, 28 and 35mm f2.8s :)

    - heavy (compared to a single lens)
    - big (again, compared to any single 2.8 in this range)
    - not as sharp on digital body (not just my opinion, look around)
    - not as wide on digital body (of course)
    - expensive (though ebay is great for that problem)

People are selling these lenses to get 17-55mm DX lenses. I shoot both film and digital so picking up one of these on ebay is a steal compared to what it is new. Mine was in A+ condition and half of what they go for new. Get one, you won't be sorry.
