I owned this lens since when it first came out in the market and have used it for about 8 months now. I'm not going to go any detailed specs here but I'm going to say a few things about the lens in real life.

This lens is meant to be used in FX sensor camera, period. If you are not going to use it on FX sensor, 18-200mm lens is good investment I think. I bought this lens 8 months ago when I purchased Nikon D300 since D3 FX was too much and I didn't really need 9fps speed nor I needed Full Frame sensor. I haven't used the lens much because I already had 18-200mm lens and I didn't like the lens on my D300 somehow. 18-200mm was much needed.

Now, I have D700 and this 14-24mm f/2.8G ED really shines and I love the lens finally. It's sharp and very fast. Most of the time, I use 14~18mm range. You can get some amazing landscape images and cool perspective shots with this wide angle.

This newly introduced lens special coating on the glass, they call it "NANO" coating and I've noticed that this lens produces less purple fringe(chromatic aberration) than my other older Nikon lens without "NANO" coating.

The lens is quite heavy and the front end lens is so big and round, you can't put any filter on it to protect the lens. That's the only downside about the lens. I have to keep remind myself not to scratch the front glass.

The lens also comes with built in lens hood. It's not that big and just sticks out to the rount front glass part. I think it serves it's purpose well.

The glass element is pretty large, so I had to get a new bag to fit this along with my other glasses.

If you want exceptional quality wide angle lens for your FX Nikon, I think this is an excellent choice. However, for DX owners, this lens might not live up to your expectations, and if you already own 18-200mm, save the money and get D700 instead. It's better spent that way.

Hope this was helpful.

  Sharpest lens this wide

It is true, it's heavy, large and in charge. I shot with a D300 before and used a tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and was blown away by the quality. I sold the D300 and upgraded to the D3 and so the tokina being a DX lens would'nt work for me. I sold that too and found the Nikkor 14-24mm. Best purchase since buying the D3. The quality is superb unlike any other wide angle lens I had ever shot with before. The only down side to this lens is the fact that the glass is not flat and so attaching a filter is out of the question.

Would I recommend it? You betcha!

  Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 G ED

This is a fantastic lens, one of the sharpest lenses I own. I never thought that I'd use this it as much as I am, and I haven't taken it off my D700 since I bought it. There is no edge distortion at 14mm, so you don't get any "fish-eye" effect. And the f/2.8 continuous maximum aperture is also pretty convenient, especially in low light settings. Apart from the fact that it's a bit heavy (owing to its really solid construction), I have nothing bad to say about this lens at all!

The first view through the viewfinder will impress. All the verticals are just that, vertical.Extremely sharp. The size of the front element is HUGE, but to get the performance Nikon had to resort to this. If you can afford this lens and are shopping, buy it.You will not be disappointed.

This is an amazing lens. Fast, sharp, and smooth. Its Nikon quality glass at 2.8 speed, so it is rather heavy and bulky. It is also bomber construction, built to handle professional use.
