Times sure have changed. There's hardly a metal camera to be found and you can carry a bag full of equipment in one hand. The Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom Nikkor is the latest lightweight from this heavyweight of the camera industry.

Plastic construction right down to its lens mount. This thing looks and feels like the label should say Fisher Price and not Nikon. However, looks can be deceiving as I soon found out.

After shooting with the 55-200 for a few weeks, I've come to appreciate what it can do. It's limited to use in good light as even VR can't change the laws of physics.

With sufficient light and good technique, the 55-200 is capable of very good performance. No, it's not as sharp and contrasty as the 70-200. It's also not going to survive the bad weather or a few solid knocks that professional use would expose it to.

Where the 55-200 excels is in its portability and above average performance. For travel or just walking around, it would be hard to beat this lens if it's used within its limits. I use mine on a D80 and have no problem getting excellent 13x19" prints.

I have to admit that I've gotten much more than my money's worth out of this lens.

If you're on a budget or just want a nice, lightweight lens in this range, take a look at the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR. Like me, you may be very much surprised at what it can do.

  55-200 VR vs 18 200 VR
Review created: 12/22/08

I wanted to purchase a 18-200 VR but our D60 came with a 18-55 and I hated to waste it. After looking at teh cost difference, we went with the 55-200. It has been impressive and has cut down changing lens drastically. We also have a 70-300 VR. She has had to change to the 18-55 only for her widest shots and is able to use the 55-200 for almost all of even indoor shots. It doesn't have the creep problem that the 18-200 VR has, is a good bit lighter and uses the same size filter (52mm) that the 18-55 does. My wife just got this camera this summer and is still a novice user but so far we are very impressed with it. If you are getting a Nikon and especially if it comes with a 18-55 VR, you should be well pleased with a 55-200 VR and it will be used most of the time. And for the pricee difference it is a great additoin to your camera.

Well made, light weight for a lense of this size. Produces sharp pictures. The Vibration reduction feature works very well and the auto focus is fast and accurate.

Excellent lens.

Images are very sharp. VR works great.
Would recommend this lens to anyone.
A good companion lens to the typical Nikon 18-55 kit lens.

  Good lens for the price

I was looking for a zoom lens for my Nikon D60. This lens isn't the best out there, but for the budget minded photographer, this lens fits the bill. Nice clean, crisp pictures. The AF is a bit slow to focus but it will do just fine in most situations. I use it mostly for my daughters soccer games. I would recommend this lens if you need a zoom lens, but don't want to spend a ton of money.

Excellent zoom lens for landscape photography. I just love it from the day i got it. But i kinda miss my other lens 18-55mm. I hate changing lenses between my shots. I would say if u have enough cash than go and buy 18-200mm lens which is the default lens of all the Nikon Pro Photographers. Otherwise if you are tight on budject like me than this is the best 55-200mm lens that money can buy.

Great lens for the money and compact size
Review created: 04/01/09

Very nice sharp lens. The big feature is the compact size and light weight. There are better lenses such as the 18-200mm @ $500+ and the 70-200mm @ $1,700+ but both are much larger and heavier. I have all 3 of these lenses and use them all. The drawback of the 55-200mm is lack of large aperture meaning more depth of field than may be desired and higher ISO or slow shutter will be required in low light. But you get what you pay for, and what you are willing to carry. Definitely pay the little extra for the VR feature.

All in all, a great lens for the price.

You simply can not find a better quality lens for the money. The pictures are crisp, with beautiful color tone. The autofocus is fairly quick and the vibration resistance technology works beautifully.

  55-200mm Nikon vr lens

Decided to buy a Nikon D90 body instead of the lens kit to get higher quailty photos for less money. I bought this along with the nikon 18-55mm vr for a low price set up - this is less money than the standard kit.

A very great lens for my Nikon D40, I really recommend it if you want a nice zoom at an affordable price. Also it's a stabilized lens so it's great for having perfect clean photos instead of blurry ones.

Great bokeh for a small price!
Review created: 10/06/09
by:

VR really works! and the lens has great bokeh. so it is perfect for taking some portraiture pictures because with the 55-200mm range you can really get close and the VR will reduce handshake.

For its price you can't beat this great telephoto and bokeh lens. Of course though if you are shotting in dark low light situations you are better off getting a 50-150 f/2.8 or a 85mm 1.4,1.8 lens. but those are a lot more expensive.

  Nikon AF-S 55-200mm Lens
Review created: 10/04/09
by:

I enjoy taking alot of pictures, both candid and portraits. It's easy to install and definitely gives the photographer a larger and closer shot of the person or area. I really can see the differnce using this type of cameras versus the small digital cameras. It gives sharper images, the colors are very vivid after printing the pictures, and easy to use. I would recommend this to photograhers who really enjoy taking pictures up close and front or just for fun, like me. You don't even have to be a professional to use it.

  Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G Lens
Review created: 10/02/09

This is a good lens if you already have a wide angle or wide angle zoom. It takes great pictures but feels cheap and flimsy. If I had to do over, I would either purchase an 18-105mm or the 18-200mm (if the funds were available).

Great lens for such low price!
Review created: 09/07/09
by:

Pros:
- cheap price(!)
- relatively small size, comparing to lens with f/2.8 or less, so you can grab it almost anywhere
- very sharp picture at all zoom range
- slight vignetting at the 200mm. I love this personally, so it's going to pros.
- front element has 52mm filter size, the same as Nikon D40's kit "18-55 f/3.5-5.6" AND as the "35mm f/1.8", so you can buy only one polarizer filter for 52mm and have it fit on all your lens
- lens' front ring is not rotating, because focusing is internal

Cons:
- diaphragm size is small(f/4-5.6), so the shutter speed will be smaller in the dark, so you'll need flash or lens with faster shutter speed
- no "M/A" mode (manual overrides auto), so you can't grab focusing ring any time and adjust focus, you'll need to switch to "M" mode.
- the minimal focusing distance is approx 1 meter.

Hence, all the cons are nothing, if you'll use this lens in the day, outdoors, and would have fun with your new lens. Buy it, if you need cheap with nice image quality lens!
