Covers the bases

Pros: This lens covers nearly all the common needs. It is very convenient to walk out with one lens and a couple of filters, and know its about all that will be needed. The VR (vibration reduction) makes a difference with hand held shots. Worth it.
Cons: To get this wide range of focal length takes a lot of glass and mechanism. The lens is heavy and bulky. And the more glass there is, the greater the effect on clarity and resolution. However, any effect on clarity is beyond my eyes to see. This is not a fast lens so higher ISO speeds are needed, which will add grain, especially with heavily cropped or enlarged photos. These are all known trade offs and the reason that fixed power lenses are still being made.
Recommendation: Get this lens first. It covers the bases at reasonable cost (compared to buying several simpler lenses).
